3 weeks later
"How are you feeling?" You ask as you sit down beside Steve. He's reading through the plan tomorrow. There are so many pages. It's understandable if he's overwhelmed by it.
"A little nervous.." he admits looking up at you.
"Don't be.. you are as pure and good-hearted as they come" you say reassuringly, resting your hand on his shoulder.
"How would you know miss?" He asks.
"Firstly we talked about miss... No need for such formalities Rogers.." you smile kindly, hoping to calm his nerves. "And let's just say I have a way of seeing the goodness in people"
"Maybe colonel Phillips is right.." he trails off.
"That oaf!" you chuckle. "He knows nothing about war" you smirk.
"And you do?" He asks curiously. You're a very secretive person.. And apparently, women didn't normally fight on Midgard, such a waste of potential, you know by experience Women make much better warriors than men.
"Let's say I've seen a lot of good people do bad things for wrong reasons.." you share. Thinking back at all the terrible mistakes Thor had made in battles. "I don't wish for history to repeat itself"
"You sound so smart all the time.." Steve says as a small smile creeps upon his lips.
"You really think so?" You light up..
"Yeah totally, you're probably the smartest person I've ever met."
You feel your cheeks gets flushed, but quickly shake the feeling of you. "You should probably get some rest, Rogers." You say weakly as you get up.
"You're right. Thank you for believing in me" Steve says just as you're about to walk out the door.
"Just promise me one thing, Steve. Don't ever change for anyone.. being you makes you stronger than half the men in that field out there" you say before walking out the door.
You almost feel guilty for feeling that warm sensation with someone else than your beloved princes. But your hope of returning home is slowly fading away. Yet the memories and pain of losing them remain just as strong.
The next morning you pick up Steve driving him to the secret laboratory midtown. Or you don't drive, no one's ever taught you that back home. You're simply there to calm his nerves yet again.
"Good morning Rogers" you smile as he gets into the car.
"You can call me Steve you know?" He grins, awkwardly.
"Alright then Steve, but then I exist you call me y/n" you introduce yourself all over again.
"That's a beautiful name," he says.
"Thank you... Steve"
You drive In silence for a while. Steve is awfully quiet.
"What troubles you?" You ask him, curious to the heavy silence.
"I know this neighbourhood" he shares. "I got beat up in that alley," he says pointing out to the small alley you're driving past.. "and in front of that shop...and that parking lot" he grows quieter. "And behind that diner," he says looking embraced down at his hands.
You hide your smile. "Have you always had something against running away?" You tease.
Steve shakes his head. "No but If you start running, they'll never let you stop" he explains. "You just stand up.. push back" You turn to look at him. He seems so small sitting here all crumbled together. "They can't say no forever right?" He says looking up at you as well.
"I know what that's like.. having every door shut in your face just because you're being yourself," you say. All your life you've been nothing but a Maid. But not to the princes.. to them you were everything. And in some way this was your chance of becoming something more.
"Then why'd you want to join the army?" Steve asks carefully. "You're a beautiful dame," he says. "Or a.. A woman" he stumbles over his words. "And Agent.. not a dame"
You try your best to hide your smile once more. You look at him confused to his point in all of this.
"You are beautiful... but.." he trails off.
"You truly have no idea how to talk to a woman do you?" You ask.
"I think this is the longest conversation I've ever had with one" Steve admits.
You look at him with kind eyes, something about him is just so pure.
"Women aren't exactly lining up to dance with a guy they might accidentally step on" he says sadly.
"Oh come on.. you must have danced" you say kindly. You've always loved dancing.. not at the balls of course but Loki and Thor always snuck out to catch a dance with you.
"Asking a woman to dance always seemed so terrifying" Steve admits. You look at him in awe. "I just figured I'd wait"
"For what?" You ask curiously
"The right partner.." Steve says looking at you.
Quickly after the car stops. Just outside a small local antique shop.
"We're here come," you say following the way into the shop.
"It's in there?" Steve questions. You simply nod your head as you walk in through the door. Howard has given you very specific instructions.
In the small shop, you're greeted by an elderly woman. "Wonderful weather this morning isn't it." The woman says.
"Yes, but I always carry an umbrella," you say.. that was the code word to get access to the secret laboratory.
She guides you to the back of the shop, down a long staircase. There's an empty room filled with bookshelves. She presses a button as the bookshelves open up to the hidden lab.
Steve follows you, you can tell by his body language his scared to death.
"It's gonna be fine.. I'll be there every step of the way" you reassure him.
Two guards open the door. As you look down upon the scientists working on the last preparations. Howard looks up at you with a large smile on his face. He winks at you. You simply roll your eyes at his remarks.
You and Steve slowly make your way down to Howard and Dr Erskine. They both greet you.
Steve looks at the machine he'll in a few minutes standing in. To become the very first super soldier.
"Are you ready?" Erskine asks.
Steve simply nods his head.
"Good take of your shirt, your tie and your hat" he instructs. Steve looks at you, you simply gesture for him to do as told. Turning your head around to make him more comfortable. After he's done he jumps up into the machine laying down. He takes a deep breath.
"Mr Stark how are your levels?" He asks.
Howard walks towards you. "Levels at 100% we're ready when you are kid" Howard says.
"He's no kid Howard" you correct him.
"Agent Jones, don't you think you would be more comfortable in the booth?" Erskine asks
"Oh yes of course" you say.
You turn to look at Steve one more time who looks terrified you won't be by his side. You give him a reassuring smile as you mouth to him he'll be alright. Then you walk to the booth.
"Ladies and gentlemen, today we take not another step towards annihilation.. but the first step on the path to peace" Erskine speaks through the microphone as they were Steve up.
You sit nervously looking down at him from your seat, not paying any attention to what he's saying.
The doctor begins counting down as everything is ready. Then the serum slowly injects into his Body. Howard then turns on the machine that closes around him. As Stark turns on the radiation. You can hear Steve's muffled screams of pain. As they reach 70 precent, Steve's screams intensify. You rush to the balcony watching as Dr Erskine bangs on the machine.
"Shut it down" you yell.
But there's no reaction.
"Howard shut it down" you scream at the top of your lungs.
Just before Howard can turn off the machine you hear a muffled voice. "No!" Steve screams.. "don't... I can do this"
Howard turns it up to 100 procent as a beaming light fills the room. You look down patiently waiting for something to happen. And finally, the machine opens up. And the Steve you put in the machine is long gone. He's enormous.. you rush down to his side as Howard and the doctor helps him out.
"I did it" Steve mumbles.
"You did it" you sigh in relief. You look at him up and down, he looked amazing before but now.. you don't even know what to say. "How do you feel?"
He looks down at you, with his bright blue eyes."taller" he breathes trying to catch his breath.
You reach out to touch his chest but quickly pull away. It feels so strange looking up at him. It's always been the other way around. " you look taller" you smile.
You look around as you see a strange man standing by the stairs. He pulls out a small lighter pushing a button. And soon a giant explosion happens where you had just been seated. Everyone seeks to cover. As the man grabs the last serum points his gun at the doctor and fires a shot. Then another one hits you in the shoulder. Both of you fall to the ground. Steve rushes to your side, looking for the gunshot.. but there's nothing there. He looks at you with confusion in his eyes before rushing to the doctor. You get up from the ground checking where the bullet hit you, and there's nothing but a tiny bullet hole in your shirt and a bullet next to you. No blood.. No wound. You chase after the man, as fast as you can. Quickly after Steve follows behind you.
You stand on the road firing a shot that kills the chauffeur. The man gets out of the car and rushes into another vehicle, driving right towards you. He once again fires a shot hitting your leg... but again nothing happens. Just before the car hits you Steve pushes you out of the way. And chases the car.
You're left alone wondering how any of this is possible... you were shot twice, you felt the pain yet nothing.
Steve meets you back at the SSR facility. After he successfully caught the secret hydra spy He once again goes to check on your wounds.
"Are you gonna tell me what's going on?" He asks confusedly.. he saw you get shot.
"I don't know" you say quietly
"You're lying"
"I'm many things.. but a liar isn't one of them" you say as you walk away. Just outside Howard is trying to tear apart the hydra agents vehicle, while arguing with the board. They're talking about hydra.
"Hydra is the nazis, deep-science division. It's led by Johan Schmidt.. but something tells us he has much bigger ambitions" you explain. The board looks at you in shock. It's uncommon for them to see a woman with power. Yet Steve and Howard look at you with proud eyes.
"Hydra's basically a cult they worship Schmidt.. they think he's invincible" Colonel Phillips adds.
"So what are you gonna do about it?" One of the board members asks.
"We're taking the fight to hydra.. pack your bags, Agent Jones you're coming with us. You as well Stark" colonel Phillips continues. " we're going to London tonight"
"Sir if we're fighting I want In" Steve interrupts.
"You're an experiment.. I asked for an army and all I got was you... you're not enough" Phillips says before walking away.
You turn to look at Steve, and then you decide to speak up" Colonel Phillips" you say coldly. " if you want my help or Starks. Rogers is coming" you hiss.
Phillips turns to look at Stark, then back at you. "Fine he can be the mascot" he scoffs.
"Are you ready?" You ask Steve
"As ready as I'll ever be.. after you agent Jones"
