SHE HADN'T MOVED. For the next four days, Leilani didn't move from her spot in her brothers studio. Of course she got up to use the bathroom, but other than that; she hadn't eaten, she barely slept, she barely moved.
She had managed to fill an entire notebook full of songs that came straight from her mind, using the instruments provided to record them. She debated with herself if she wanted anyone to hear them, a constant ringing in her ears every time she strummed the strings on the guitar.
The thought of her beating Luna senseless, even if she wasn't pregnant and Leilani thought she was, played on her mind like a constant loop. It was a loop that she couldn't escape, like the corn mazes at Halloween festivals.
She was scared, fucked in the head more just from the thought of hurting her apparent niece of nephew. It itched at her, and it drove her insane to the point where she just had to escape and lock herself in the home studio surrounded by the one thing she truly loved; music.
Ash and Alex came up with a plan on the first day. Open the door, set food on the table and get the bell out. Leilani ate the food of course, she knew she would be endangering her health if she hadn't. That cycle repeated for those four days. Give her food and water, throw her a blunt every afternoon and leave her be.
Ash felt terrible, so he had been staying with the siblings. He slept in the guest bedroom downstairs and right next to the living room, constantly twisting and turning in the bedsheets as he struggled to fall asleep. The only remedy? Sitting outside the studio door and listening to Leilani play the piano or the guitar, it was like entering heaven to him.
When Leilani went to the bathroom on the second day, she found Ash laid against the wall, his legs spread out in front of him as his head rested on the doorway. She walked up to her room, bringing down a blanket and throwing it over his body; just to make sure he wasn't cold.
I knew that Leilani was affected by it, but I didn't think she was so affected she would lock herself in the studio. But man oh man, when she found out Luna wasn't actually pregnant, God should have been with the poor twenty year old girl that day.
"Ya know, if you were a candy you would be sour." Ash says as he walks into the studio, placing a plate of food on the small table and shutting the door. Leilani hums as her pen scratches against the white notebook pages, her eyes never leaving the ink.
"If you were a candy, you would be the one that everyone hates." Leilani smiles sarcastically, biting the inside of her cheek as Ash scoffs and shakes his head.
"Are you gonna tell me what you're writing? Singing?" Ash questions, taking a seat on the little black couch and kicking his feet up on the matching black table. Leilani shrugs, placing her pen in her mouth and spinning the chair around so she's now facing him.
"I'm writing something that's called 'none of your fucking business'." Leilani tells him, holding up the notebook and sticking her middle finger up at him. At the same time she does this, Joseph enters the room with a bag of chips in his hand, throwing himself down next to Ash and offering him a chip.
"So, what's miss drama queen writing about today?" Joseph questions, throwing a chip into his mouth and chewing as he looks at Leilani then to Ash, a small smile on his face.
"She said it's called none of your fucking business." Ash complains, crossing his arms against his chest as he sinks back into the couch, looking at the bag of chips sitting on Joseph's lap.
A loud laugh escapes from Joseph as he shakes his head, patting the side of the couch and wheezing. Taking a sharp inhale, his face completely drops and he looks at Leilani, his eyes narrowed as the two engage in a staring contest.
"I don't like you." Leilani huffs, spinning back around in the black chair and setting her eyes on the computer. Joseph sticks his tongue out playfully, Ash snatching the bag of chips off his lap.
"Hey you fucker! I said one not the whole damn bag! I didn't know midgets had such a big appetite, damn." Joseph exclaims, snatching the bag out of his hand and stuffing it behind him, leaning back slightly so Ash didn't have access to it.
"I'm six foot ten." Ash retorts, furrowing his eyebrows at him. Leilani cackles loudly, leaning back in the chair as she takes a bite out of the sandwich next to her, looking over her shoulder at the two boys on the couch.
"If you're six foot ten, then I'm straight." Leilani smiles, her words slightly mumbled due to the sandwich in her mouth. Ash rolls his eyes as Leilani turns back around, clicking away on the keyboard.
"So like, when are you two gonna get together? I mean honestly, it's quite obvious you two wanna get together, prepubescent love and all that shit." Joseph questions, looking at Ash who cringes at his words. Leilani stifles a laugh as she looks at the computer, merging the tracks of her recorded song together.
"I've hit puberty Joseph." Leilani mumbles, her manicured nails clicking on the keyboard, the noise echoing through the silence.
"You're like twelve no you haven't." He retorts, a sarcastic smile on his face as he grabs another chip, throwing it into his mouth and leaning into the couch.
"I bled from my vagina every month, my uterus gets stabbed repeatedly by my insides, I think that's puberty." Leilani smiles, turning around and facing Joseph as he shrieks loudly, slapping his hands over his ears along with Ash, the two shaking their heads and cringing.
"Shut the fuck up! Shut up!" Ash exclaims, shaking his head as his eyebrows furrow and his eyes snap closed. Leilani giggled slightly, taking another bite of her sandwich.
I think that was a good day for Leilani. She was distracted by Joseph and Ash, and the constant loop wasn't playing in her mind. She felt at peace for the hour they were in there.
"Let's make a deal." Leilani leans back in the chair, crossing her hands on her lap and intertwining her fingers. Ash and Joseph remove their hands from their ears, their eyebrows raising in sync.
"I'll let you two hear one of the songs. Just one, and I need your honest opinion. Because I like it, I just don't know if other people will." She continues, both boys faces lighting up like a the Rockefeller Christmas tree. Joseph nods repeatedly while Ash tries to hide his excitement by shrugging.
Leilani nods, turning around and pressing the space bar. Joseph raises his eyebrows as the bass plays through the speakers built into the room, Leilani cowering into the chair.
In reality, she didn't really give a fuck what people thought. She only cared about what the people closest to her thought, considering she had to see them everyday.
Joseph claps loudly, playing the air drums as Ash nods along to the beat of the song, a small smile on his face as he listens to the girls voice flow throughout the large room. Leilani raises her eyebrows at their reaction, a small crease in between them.
"I just wanna know who this is about because you're a romance virgin!" Joseph yells over the tune, shaking his head as he continues to play the air drums, his rings moving along his fingers.
"It's about nobody!" Leilani yells back, a large grin apparent on her face as Ash smiles at her, his eyes glistening under the warm light of the studio. The song fades out, the room going completely silent as Leilani looks at the two boys.
"I loved it. Honestly, that shit goes hard as fuck. The little breaths in between your words really just add to it." Joseph critiques, a grin on his face as he looks at the girl he sees as a sister. Leilani's smile only grows wider as she looks at Ash, who's blinking rapidly as he nods.
"Yeah, yeah. Shits cool. You did that all yourself?" Ash tells her, pointing to all the instruments placed around the room. Leilani breathes out as she nods, preparing for disappointment.
"You could get famous with just that song. I really liked it." Ash nods, a sincere smile on his face as he makes eye contact with Leilani.
Leilani's heart only grew warmer at Ash's words, because she knew she liked the boy. She just didn't know how to say it back, since he already said it a couple days prior. She googled shit all night after he said it, and everything told her that she had feelings for him.
"Oo! You two are having a moment!" Joseph squeals, wiggling around on the black couch and he stomps on the ground. Leilani groans, throwing her head back and rolling her eyes.
"I'm still waiting for you two to get together. It's so obvious you like each other, what's so hard about it?" Joseph questions, his face now serious as he looks at Leilani with concern. Ash's eyes travel to Leilani who just shakes her head, turning back around in the chair and kicking her feet up.
"Shit, Fez just texted me. I gotta go. I'll see y'all later." Ash pushes himself off the couch, hurrying to get out the room and making sure the door is shut behind him. Leilani sighs as she spins around in the chair, her eyes focused on the ceiling.
"If you like him, tell him. You never know when someone's gonna get ripped from you in the blink of an eye." Joseph whispers as he stands up, opening the door and walking out. Leilani swallows harshly, pulling out her phone.
