Alex's POV

Monday, December 27 – Atlanta, Georgia

I wish we were back at my house. I wish we were back on the couch. I wish we were back tangled up in each other, savoring every moment possible. I wish we could be anywhere than sitting here, on these hardass benches, my butt aching from being uncomfortable. Or maybe it was every emotion threatening to boil over thanks to everything that had happened.

I couldn't bare to even look in her direction. How could someone sit there and be proud of what they did? How could someone be so vindictive to continue to the dig the knife deeper after hurting someone? How could someone live with themselves?

It was why I focused my eyes forward, knowing the reason that I was truly here. This was about doing right for him. This was about being the best friend that I could be. It was why I was here, sitting back further than warranted, but ready to be here as a friend for him in this moment.

It was the typical court proceedings that you'd expect with any case. They called up Bill, asking him to describe what he saw that day. I felt my stomach flip flop as he recalled Fletcher coming to his house, walking in to Chase's and finding him where he was. I almost wanted to throw up in that very moment. I couldn't imagine walking into that situation and remaining calm. I probably would've screamed my fool head off and started swinging at her. Let's face it – she deserved it.

"Could the dog had thought something was wrong when there wasn't anything wrong?" The defense attorney questions as they try to come up for some reason for what Kaitlyn did. The logical side of me knew they were probably right in asking that question.

"He's never done anything like that before so I don't think so," Bill answers, which I still wanted to know how he knew what exactly to do. How did Fletcher know to go get Bill and Cindy? I told you dogs are smarter than humans!

"It's known that you haven't approved of Mr. Elliott's relationship with my client," which could be said for everybody else in this damn room actually. "Could you be trying to imply something that didn't happen?"

"I wasn't the one that filed the charges, was I?" Scratch that, maybe Bill is smarter than the dogs as he's killing all theories that they may have.

"But could you have forced your son to do so?" Does anybody want to explain to her how that does not work and why? I'm sorry, but anybody that knows Chase knows he doesn't let someone run his damn life.

"No." He could've said more, but hey, it's something that they can't twist right?

"Perhaps your son set up my client, and trained the dog to go find you. I mean, everybody knows they didn't have a good relationship," which is more motive to understand why this actually happened. Is this really a good defense?

"Chase wouldn't do something like that." I have never known Chase to be vindictive, or do someone wrong no matter how far they have pushed his buttons. If somebody could think that otherwise, then they are nuts.

"Perhaps, or perhaps you don't know your son as well as you think. I'm done. Thank you for your time."

The last person to take the stand was probably the worse. I never could understand why anyone would want to hear what Kaitlyn had to say. She didn't even deserve the chance to offer the time of day after what had happened.

I have to say that she is a good actor, though. She definitely portrayed what the defense wanted her to in trying to say that Chase welcomed her in, and convinced her to have some fun along the way. Of course, things went sour when others showed up – whether set-up or not, but definitely not her fault.

There was no one to say her story was right or wrong. There was no proof to say whether she was right in her words. Let's face it – it was simply his words against hers because the evidence could be swung either way.

Taking a deep breath, I didn't want to let that cause me to lose hope. His words against hers. He held a higher regard than her, and her story definitely had perhaps a loophole as they were separated and on bad terms. The jury had to believe it. She had to pay for what she did.
