SNEAK PEEK:
Chapter One: Daylight
HAZEL
It's been two weeks since the attack that took three of my friend's lives. They died while I survived; I wear a scar down my shoulder as a permanent reminder of what happened that night. I never did like camping but my friends thought it would be an awesome way to blow off some steam from all our college work. What better way to celebrate than getting wasted in the woods. Every day I ask myself why I was spared while others died. And every time I close my eyes I'm haunted by the red eyes of death. No human has red eyes but I swore by my testimony, even if it made my family question my sanity.
I have a huge claw mark down my left shoulder to partway down my back which still hasn't healed properly and never will according to doctors. But that night I was also bitten by whatever attacked me on my stomach, however when I woke up in the hospital and asked the nurses they told me that there was no bite mark. I could have sworn I felt teeth sink into me, but there was no evidence and I thought it best to keep quiet.
It's been two weeks since I stepped foot on the college campus and today I was finally forcing myself to go back. I expected people to talk behind my back; it was only natural in the circumstances that surrounded the 'animal' attack that claimed three bright students. But luckily I had my two best friends Rachel and Jake to keep me on planet earth.
Since the attack I've also somehow found my emotions and senses heightened which meant the slightest wrong comment and I would snap. It also meant that when I cried I became a wreck. A shrink said it could be my body reacting to the traumatic event I went through, but that didn't explain it; he only came up with that theory to sign me a clean bill of mental health. I knew there was something else at play here.
It wasn't just my emotions and senses that had changed, I now felt more physically fit and people had commented that my body had also changed for the better. My skin was flawless which was a rare occurrence, my eyes seemed brighter was and when I looked in a mirror I swore that my ass and breasts had gotten slightly bigger. I wasn't complaining, a change was good and exactly what the doctor ordered. What I needed was to move on with my life.
'Damn girl if I was straight I'd take you right now in this car park.'
Jake's high voice snapped me out of my trance and I found myself smiling at my gay best friend. Jake and I had bonded the first day of college over our obsession with Top Model and Real Housewives; he also had killer dress sense which I envied. But he always knew what to say to lighten my mood.
'Is that a push up bra? Because your ladies look fit to burst.'
I turned around the opposite direction and playfully slapped my other best friend Rachel on the shoulder, she smirked at me. Rachel was your stereotypical popular rich girl, she had the blue eyes and blonde hair which she had cropped and curled to perfection. Rachel was a cheerleader in high school and head of the team in college. Why she chose to hang out with Jake and I was a real mystery sometimes but she completed us.
'You look fit Hazel; it's good to have my partner in crime back.'
Next thing I know I'm being engulfed from both sides in a bear hug, normally I wasn't much of a hugger but maybe the new me could learn to be a hugger. We ignored the odd looks shot at us by fellow students, we were just happy to be reunited.
'As much as I love this hug fest I need to get to class ladies.'
Jake pulled away first and began walking towards the music hall. Rachel and I shared a confused expression before jogging to catch up with our eager friend. We'd never seen Jake this excited to go to class, normally he was trying to talk us into skipping with him but today something was different.
'Slow down buddy, what's the rush?'
I linked my arm through his and Rachel copied me on the other side which caused Jake to slow his pace which made both of us girls giggle.
'What's my favourite band ladies?'
Rachel shrugged her shoulders and a light bulb went off in my head.
'Maroon 5 my dear Jake and you find Adam Levine pretty damn attractive.'
I wiggled my eyes suggestively and watched a blush creep across his cheeks before he composed himself. He hated being embarrassed especially by me and Rachel, but he was just so fun to tease sometimes.
'You guys always mock me because I chose to major in music but now the jokes on you. Because Maroon 5 are back in LA and in about ten minutes I'll be in the same room as them face to face with my future husband.'
'What are you talking about Jake?'
I had to agree with Rachel, what was our friend trying to tell us. Jake sighed in frustration.
'Adam and Jesse are coming in to give a talk to the class.'
I wasn't expecting that, neither was Rachel before a huge smile crept onto her face. Like Jake she was a huge Maroon 5 fan, I believe that's how they bonded so quickly. I liked their music but I wasn't some crazy fan girl obsessed with meeting them or being seen by them. I respected them as artists and people but the same couldn't be said for the two people standing next to me.
'Why can't I ever meet anyone famous in fashion? I'm jealous Jake, you better get a photo or something for me.'
I couldn't help but laugh as Rachel whined at Jake who rolled his eyes at her actions. Rachel was a big fan girl and although she came across as quiet and polite, but when she loved something or someone this crazy side came over her which could be scary to people who didn't know her.
'Chill your beans Rachel. Is it me or do they always jack the heating up in this building?'
I unlinked my arm from Jakes as we entered the music hall and a wave of heat came over me, it could have had something to do with the swarm of mainly girls who were obviously here to see two member of Maroon 5. I wiped my hand across my forehead and shrugged off my leather jacket. I held it over my arm as I tried to catch up with my friends who hadn't even noticed that they'd left me behind.
The volume seemed to be turned up to max as I made my way through the crowd, I tried to cover my ears but it didn't seem to work. I cursed my new heightened senses as I approached Jake and Rachel who were standing in one of the few remaining free spots at the back of the crowd. I smirked at Jake's face, he didn't seem too pleased with the swarm of girls in front of us, I looked towards the front of the crowd and spotted Adam and Jesses talking to some girls.
'The one time I actually want to get to class early, over half these people aren't even in my class.'
I smiled and tugged his cheeks, he sounded so bitter at the prospect of Adam being more focused on the sea of girls falling all over him instead of sweet old Jake who had loved him from the start.
'If you chose English lit like me or fashion like Rachel you wouldn't have to queue to get into the classroom.'
He threw his head back and laughed.
'No thank you girls, I'll stick to music.'
I shrugged my shoulders and went back to looking around the crowded hall, I just wanted to get out of here and head to my far quieter class but Rachel always walked with me and she was currently occupied fangirling. I flinched as a couple of girls squealed; it felt like my ears were exploding.
'Hazel, don't look now but I swear Adam is totally checking you out.'
I didn't want Rachel to be correct; there were far prettier girls then me in this corridor who he could choose from. But when I turned my head I locked eyes with his alluring hazel ones, he was full on staring at me. I should have felt uncomfortable with his leering gaze but a part of me felt warm inside that he was paying attention to me rather than the sea of girls clambering for his attention.
I shook off the feeling pretty quickly and turned back to face Rachel who was grinning like a mad man. Her blue eyes suddenly latched onto the jacket over my arm.
'Can I borrow your jacket? It will compliment the outfit I'm creating in class. Pretty please Haze?'
I handed it to her without a second thought; she jumped up and down while Jake nudged me in the arm and leaned over while Rachel was in her happy place.
'You do know that you're never getting that jacket back. She never returns the things that she 'borrows'.'
I face palmed, why had I been so naive. Of course Rachel wouldn't give me my jacket back; she still had one of my beanies and scarf's. She was always 'borrowing' items for her coursework and then Jake and I never saw them again.
'Damn it, now I'll need to buy another one.'
Jake smiled warmly and squeezed my arm. We both glanced in Rachel's direction and she was happily skipping back through the crowd towards the entrance. I shook my head; sometimes it was as if Rachel had a screw loose in her head.
'You better catch up with her Hazel. I'll meet you here after class.'
I nodded and hugged Jake before turning on my heels and heading after my mad blonde friend. All the while I couldn't shake the feeling of eyes burning into the back of my head. Was Adam still staring at me and why?
ADAM
As soon as she walked into the building her scent overwhelmed me and the beast inside me growled with the need to have her here and now in front of all these people. When Jesse told me that we were coming to this college place to talk about music to say I was bored would have been an understatement. But now this girl was different from the many swarming around us.
She stood towards the back with a guy and a girl. The beast inside me didn't like the thought of her with another man. The girl whose scent lured me in was called Hazel or Haze as one of her friends referred to her. The overexcited blonde was called Rachel and the boy was called Jake and would be taking this music class. Although it was Hazel out of the three I chose to pay attention to.
Her long brown hair was curled so that it rested just below her chest and my she had a chest on her. Rachel mentioned that I was staring at her, had I really been that obvious? Stupid Adam, you need to be more careful next time. When Hazel turned around I found myself lost in her own hazel eyes, the name seemed ironic now and her parents must have known she's get made fun of at school.
The beast inside me subsided the minute we made eye contact, I could get lost in her eyes so easily. I breathed in and closed my eyes; her heartbeat was above normal she was both excited and confused by the attention I was giving her. Jesse nudged me roughly in the side and I opened my eyes.
'Adam what are you doing?'
Jesse kept his voice low as he continued to sign things; we'd been friends since forever so I knew I had to answer him truthfully because he could see through my lies.
'That girl at the back talking to that blonde girl, her scent smells different.'
Jesse casually looks in the direction I motion in and locates Hazel and her friends; he sniffed the air and shrugs his shoulders.
'She's a wolf, a newly bitten one at that. I bet she doesn't even know what she is poor thing. Can't be more than two weeks old if I had to make a judgement on the spot.'
I glanced across at my best friend and band mate, he just casually threw it out there that Hazel was a werewolf just like us and the rest of the band. How could she be new? I knew some werewolves in LA but no one had bitten anyone recently. Suddenly my mind went blank as I latched onto Hazel's shoulder when she turned; she had a scar that resembled claw marks running down it. I knew why she felt familiar, I was the one who clawed her shoulder and bit her during a confrontation with hunters a couple of weeks back. I thought that her body would reject the bite and she would die because most bodies rejected the change, but here she was and turning into a werewolf.
'Ad, stop being a creeper and sign something will ya?'
I snapped out of my thoughts and found myself going into autopilot as Jesse told me to sign something. I needed to tell him that I had bitten and turned someone, she'd need to be bought into our pack. I was the alpha which made her my responsibility. Luckily she got my blood pumping, I bet she was wild in bed.
