You, an advisor of Elrond, are worried about not seeing Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli after befriending them at the Council of Elrond (the meeting held in Rivendell to discuss the fate of the One Ring).
The colors of sky blue, blinding yellow, and light pink mixed together in the sky above.
The golden leaves falling before you reminded you of the quick amount of time it took for the trees to be bare. The autumn weather represented the short minutes you had before your three companions would depart from Rivendell to go on their quest. After that, everything would change.
There would be no merriment and laughter reminiscing from the halls of the Last Homely House, and you would be forced to consider heading into the West.
A tear slid down your cheek as you feel overwhelmed with having to decide with staying or leaving everything behind.
Your thoughts were interrupted when a stout dwarf approached you. "Gimli!" you call out.
His hearty laugh emanates from his chest, rattling his armor. "It would seem that you, an elf, actually enjoy my presence."
"I do, Gimli. Would it be unwise to say to that you, a dwarf, might enjoy mine?" you raise an eyebrow.
A towering, slim figure appeared over the dwarf. "He enjoys your company. I can sense it."
"Legolas, I didn't ask you about how I felt." Gimli turned around to poke Legolas in the chest.
The two of them started bickering over silly, unimportant things, while you laughed at their childish behavior.
"Îdh tya lambion (rest your tongues)," you say to the quarrelsome quest mates. "Mae govannen (well met), Legolas."
Legolas nodded in response. "Mae govannen."
"I never understand what you're saying!" Gimli complained in his deep, hoarse voice.
You and Legolas chuckled.
Striding over to where you sat on a perfectly crafted bench made out of stone, Aragorn approached the laughing friends.
"What is all this laughter for?" Aragorn asked.
You shrugged. "My friend, a little laughter is needed everyday, especially on the somber occasion of leaving Rivendell on such risky business."
"Y/N," Aragorn looked into your sad eyes. "We will return."
Sighing, you replied. "How can you be sure?"
"We can't. We just have to have a little faith." Gimli spoke up.
"But you can be sure that we will make it with the stubbornness of a dwarf." Legolas said.
"And the arrogance of an elf." Gimli quickly backfired.
You just shook your head at the two. They seemed to always be arguing. All with good intentions, you suppose.
"They mean well." Aragorn quietly whispered to you, while the elf and dwarf were arguing again.
"That's all I need to know," you spoke back in the same quiet tone he used.
Everyone fell silent after Legolas and Gimli had stopped talking, leaving you to wonder how long it would be before they left on this very day.
Your thoughts didn't last long when a servant of Elrond's showed himself from behind a pillar. He said, directing the words to the trio, "You must make haste. All the others have packed and are ready to leave!"
The servant ushered Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli toward the doors leading to the interior of the Last Homely House.
"Wait!" you yelled for them. "When will I see you again?"
All of them turned around to face you, Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn not knowing what to say with the lack of time they had.
Luckily, Aragorn stated, "Once the Ring has been destroyed, we will reunite once more. I know it will be so."
Like the leaves quickly leaving the trees, your friends hastily left you.
You hoped you would see them again.
But, for now, you wished they had said a proper farewell.
