" his name is d'Artagnan . " dustin spoke , a big smile on his face , as the group stared at the thing in his halloween box .
the curly haired boy picked up at the green , slimy creature , the animal made noises as he picked it up .
" cute , right ? "
" d'Atagnan ? " mike wheeler asked , a disgusting / confused look on his face .
" dart for short . " dustin kept the smile on his face .
velma and max gave each other a look of disgust , before grabbing each other's hands .
" and he was in your trash ? " the ginger asked , squeezing velmas hand .
"foraging for food ! " the curly haired boy thought for a few seconds , before - " do you want to hold him ? "
max immediately dropped velmas hand , and started to protest . " no , no , i don't want too - "
"he doesn't bite . don't worry , don't worry - " just as he dropped dart into the gingers hands.
" oh , god ! he's slimy . " max immediately threw dart into velmas hands .
" ew ! ew ! that is disgusting , dustin . " velma passed dart to lucas .
" ugh , he is like a living booger ! "
" what the fuck ! "
" get this thing out of my hands ! "
" ugh ! oh , god ! "
once mike got the slimy creature , he started to inspect it , trying to figure out what he was holding .
" what is he ? " the dark haired boy asked .
" my question exactly . "
" at first i thought it was some kind of pollywog. " dustin started , as he slammed some books on the table .
" pollywog ? "
" it's another word for tadpole , we learned that in the 3rd grade . " viv answered , an annoyed look on her face .
max made a 'o' expression , as she nodded her head .
dustin looked at the two girls , feeling discomfort , he decided to continue .
" all right , so all of us should know that most tadpoles are aquatic , right ? " everyone nodded their heads as he opened a page in one of his books , that had the ' frog life cycle ' on it , " well dart ? he isn't . he doesn't need water . "
" yeah , but aren't there non-aquatic pollywogs ? " lucas sinclair asked .
"terrestrial pollywogs ? yep , two to be exact . " again , dustin opened a new page on his book , " indirana semipalmata and the adenomera andreae , one's from india one's from south america . so how did one end up in my trash ? "
" maybe some scientists brought it here , and it escaped ? " max reasoned .
" max , hunny , why would scientists come to hawkins ? there is nothing special about this place . " velma crossed her arms , all the other kids ( other than max ) gave each other a look of fear .
suddenly , mike saw something. " do you guys see that ? " as the group looked down at dart , who looked like it had something inside of it , moving . " looks like something is moving inside of it . "
hearing that , dawson grabs a lamp that was beside him and shined it on dart . causing dart to make a loud screeching noise , and for all the kids to jump back .
dart started to run away from the light , and he almost fell of the table .
" it's okay , it's okay . " dustin whispered to the creature . " i got you , little guy . "
now louder , dustin spoke . " and there's another thing . "
" are you kidding me ?. "
dustin ignored velma , and continued talking . " reptiles , they're cold-blooded . ectothermic , right ? "
" they love heat , the sun . dart hates it . it hurts him . " dustin finished .
" so if he isn't a pollywog or a reptile ... " velma said , a confused look on her face .
" then i've discovered a new species ! " dustin smiled , with a excited look on his face .
suddenly the bell rang , causing the party to jump from their places and start walking to their new class .
after school velma , max , lucas , viv and dustin stood in mr clarkes classroom .
" this is the reason i was late for class . " dustin started , as he pulled out his proton pack and put it on mr clarkes desk .
" pretty neat. these door function ? " mr clarke asked , fascinated in whatever dustin had to say .
" well - yeah , obviously . but it's not about the trap , it's what's inside . "
dustin continued , " now , this very well may change your perception of the world - "
" just show him ! " velma exclaimed .
ignoring velma , mr clarke stayed interested . " consider my interests piqued . "
" all right , first , let's just clarify that .. "
" this is my discovery . not your . "
" dustin , jesus ! just show him ! " lucas exclaimed , now annoyed .
" i'm just trying to clarity - "
" dustin ! " max and vivian exclaimed .
"okay , fine . " dustin gave in , just as the science room door opened.
" stop ! " mike warned as will , dawson and himself ran into the room .
" i'm really sorry , mr clarke . it was just a stupid prank . " the dark haired boy told as he picked up the proton pack .
" what are you doing ? "
" i told him to stop . we need to go . right now ! " mike said as he ran out of the room , the others following behind him .
just as max and velma were about to run into the av room , mike stopped them .
" party members only . " he said .
" i'm apart of the party ? " velma questioned , " and max is our friend now . let us in micheal .
" oh yeah .. " mike started , " well , all the party members that weren't in california , november last year . " just as he finished , he slammed the door .
velma stepped away from the now closed door , and sat down next to max who sat on the floor , max turned her head towards to her ' friend ' then put her head on velmas shoulders .
" your friends are kinda mean . " max started , " it's like they hate me ! "
" they don't hate you .. " velma started , " well - they might hate you , but dawson and i don't ! "
" it's bullshit . " the brunette sighed .
max nodded her head against velmas shoulder , grabbed velmas hand before asking .
" wait , do you have a bobby pin ? " max asked , a desperate look in her eyes .
velma muttered ' i'm not sure ' before grabbing her bag that sit next to her , and digging through it , once she found a bobby pin . she gave it to max .
once max had the bobby pin , she started to pick the lock on the door , once the lock clicked . max stood up and opened the door .
once the door opened , dart came running out and the six kids who were in the room came running out .
dustin tumbled ontop of max , viv tripped over velmas foot .
" where'd he go ? "
" what was that ? " max asked as velma grabbed her hand and helped her up , the two kept their hands interlocked .
" dart ! "
" what ? "
" you let him escape ! "
" shut up , micheal ! you're the one who didn't let us into the room ! " velma yelled .
" why did you attack him ? " dustin asked as he shoved mike into the wall .
" come on . " mike exclaimed as he ran to look for dart , the rest behind him .
max and velma ran of together , still holding each others hands.
" don't hurt him , don't hurt him ! "

also viv is kinda mean in this chapter but eh
explaining !! the reason velma wasn't there when the part met eleven was that , dawson and velma have a cousin with cancer that lives in california , so in november of 1983 she went and stayed with that cousins family ( cause she was really close with that cousin ) . this cousin / situation will be coming up later in the book so yeah ! bye , bye !
