Psychology. The subject I sat near enough to C/N for us to talk. Sure, there was a girl that sat in between us, but she was a friend of mine and had figured out I liked the boy a while back. Our conversations were rarely normal, mostly somewhat disturbing, that being his fault, of course: he was a teenage boy, after all.
I do remember one normal conversation we had together, and I think about it a lot.
"What are you guys doing after secondary school?" I had asked, as C/N would have never been the cause of a normal chat.
"I'm going to [random college name]," he said, "I already play for the basketball team there, so it makes sense."
I nodded, "I'm considering [random college name]." That was the truth, as I was deciding between that and another college that had piqued my interest, and interestingly enough it had nothing to do with him. I didn't even know he was going there until then.
"You should come," he had said, "Come to my games- we need a good home crowd."
I had laughed at the time, but ever since I have been considering taking him up on that offer, even if it was just a joke.
But as I said, not all our conversations are sunshines and rainbows.
I can't even remember why, but we were talking about our mothers' labours with us.
"My mum was in labour with me for forty hours," I had said.
"That's a long time," another friend of mine, sat on the row behind, commented.
"I always say that perfection takes time."
"Did you know I was 4.8kg at birth?" C/N said.
My jaw dropped slightly, "That's huge."
"Yep. I ruined my mum's back and she had to get surgery."
I gave him a bewildered look, "I was 4kg."
"That's still pretty big," he said.
"You guys know how much you weighed?" the friend in between us gave us jokingly weird looks.
"You know I was on course to be over seven foot tall when I was little- you know how the doctors draw up a chart."
"You failed though, huh?" I replied.
He laughed a little, "Yeah, hit six foot and have been growing slowly ever since."
"How tall are you?"
"Six two, currently."
"Y/N! Back to Earth!" B/N's voice cut through my thoughts.
I looked at her with a scowl, "I was thinking good thoughts."
"I don't care, help me with this maths homework."
"I fucking hate you."
"No you don't."

The open day for [random college name] came around, and I found my dad and I entering through the front. They handed us a prospectus upon entry, and we headed straight for the science department, to see if the college could sway my opinion on taking a science. Alas, they could not, and we visited some other departments before deciding to take a look at the facilities, including the sports hall.
And, to my great luck, C/N was there, chatting to a couple of his friends. We made eye contact, and he soon approached with a smile. I found it marginally funny that he was taller than my dad.
"Hello," he greeted, turning to my dad and saying, "I'm C/N, a friend of Y/N's."
My dad greeted him, before taking what seemed like a well calculated leave and going to read one of the boards on the wall.
"Why are you even here?" I asked, "Don't you know you're going?"
"Yeah, but I wanna get a feel for the place from a student perspective. It's called thinking smart."
"Right," I said, looking around, "This where you play basketball?"
"Yep. I'm very good at it, you know."
I smiled, "Sure you are."
"I am!" he said defensively, "Come to this college and my games and you'll find out."
"I'm good, thanks."
"Then you have no culture."
When my dad came back, I waved goodbye to C/N and headed to another department.
"So, who was that, hm?" he said.
"C/N?"
"Yeah."
"I don't know- a friend?"
"He wasn't talking to you like a friend."
"He's like that with everyone."
My dad hummed, evidently not believing me.
I decided to discontinue the conversation, and picked up a subject leaflet.

Chemistry a couple days afterwards involved a practical, so we were all moving around the room. I remained in my seat as a lot of my friends were away with covid, so I didn't know what to do with myself. All of a sudden, C/N was right in my face and said, "Hello? D'you need help?"
I stared at him wide-eyed.
"D'you need help?" he repeated.
"No, I'm fine."
"You sure? You look pretty lonely."
I sighed, "I mean, I guess, all my friends are sick."
"Come with us then," he gestured to C/B/N, who was setting up the practical.
"You sure?"
He nodded, "Of course."
We began the practical, and as I poured the hydrochloric acid into the measuring cylinder, I felt C/N, who was going to fetch some magnesium, press against my back as he squeezed past. I felt warmth creep to my cheeks and looked up to see C/B/N smirking at me.
"You like him, don't you?" he said when C/N was no longer in hearing distance.
"Maybe."
He laughed.
When C/N came back over, I saw an exchange of glances between the two, and I could sense they had an unspoken conversation.
"Miss, can I please go to the toilet?" C/B/N said.
"Fine, but be quick!"
As he disappeared, C/N turned to look at me. "You should work with us more often."
"I should?"
"Specifically me, though."
"Oh really?"
"Yep."
I pondered what the exchanged eye contact between him and C/B/N could have meant.
"Will you go on a date with me?" he said, taking me off guard.
"I-"
"We can do whatever you want."
"I-"
"I promise I'm not that bad."
"Let me fucking talk, Jesus Christ."
"Sorry."
"Yes... I'll go on a date with you."
