"ah, im sorry for asking but.. could you maybe ask y/n for help?"
"oh, well, if its help you need, maybe y/n can help."
"i mean- hmm... maybe you can convince y/n to join us for dinner?"
"y/n will listen to you, go on."
"hm? y/n? well she was here a moment ago..."
"y/n always wanders off.. maybe she's with kazuha again..."
everyday you would hear the same thing. people would be too scared to speak to you, and would send a messenger of sorts. usually, it was to ask for help, yet whenever you offered, they would be too scared to accept it. you didnt understand why everyone never really like coming near you - whether it be your complexion or the fact that you were literally a wanted fugitive from inzauma.
but so was kazuha, yet everyone seemed to be alright with him. it didnt matter to you however, kazuha was your friend after all. you had ran away long after he already had, so you never had the chance to formally meet him until you had joined the crux fleet, begging them for help when you nearly drowned.
they would ask kazuha to talk to you more often than not, and of course kazuha didn't mind. neither did you, and today was one of those days again - a slow day, with work to be done.
"y/n, the people are looking for you," kazuha said softly as he slipped to sit next to you on the top of the crow's nest. you just stared out into the sea as kazuha smiled. "thinking about home?"
"i always am." was your reply. your past was filled with misunderstandings, and you only ran away because you didn't want to join baal on her vision hunt decree. baal and you had been best friends for over centuries, but the moment she turned her views, you knew you had to escape or you no longer beared the geo vision you oh so held onto.
your vision was your pride, and sara had almost convinced you to join her in the vision hunt decree - for there were some who just didnt deserve to have a vision. but it wasn't fair to you, because you were to keep your vision, but others had to give up their ambitions just because of what you could have believed in.
but you didn't. you fought with baal - she had left a long scar on the back of your neck, which you had kept hidden from everyone with your hair. nobody knew your past, not even kazuha, that you had been friends with baal. if people knew, word would spread, and people would assume you were a spy.
you know how peoples words are.
"here, have this." kazuha extended his hand out to you, and it was a small stick of multi-coloured dangos. you didn't know how, but kazuha found out your fondness for these little sweets. you happily accepted his offer with a thanks, and went to eat them happily.
you and kazuha sat in silence as the ship graced the calm waters. you were happy just being in his presence, and it made you happy that even if no words needed to be spoken between you two, there was a certain atmosphere that you found comforting.
the both of you sat there until the sky was painted purple and pink, which reminded you of the sakuras back home. you finished your dangos and got to your feet, pulling kazuha with you. "we should help the others now."
"mmh, that would be nice."
"y/n, care to join us for drinks?" beidou asked as she raised her glass with a bunch of the other crewmates. you shook your head with a smile.
"i'll pass beidou, but thank you."
the others frowned a little, but they resumed their partying and drinking. just a few moments ago, everyone had picked up a traveler and would be returning to inazuma to do some work. it felt frightening to be going back there, but the traveler just seemed to be looking for something, and in their eyes - it just looked as though they needed answers.
maybe you did too.
you retreated back down into the bunks, where you saw kazuha reading a book. he looks up from the hollow book and smiles at you. "you're not at the party it would seem?"
"well neither are you.." you said as you shut the door and sat on the chair in front of him. kazuha looked a little tired, you've noticed, and he had his hair down slightly. it wasn't tied up like usual, and the oil lamp on the table beside him glowed just enough for you to see the beautiful and peaceful fire in his beautiful eyes.
"you're staring at me," kazuha smiled, shutting his book to catch your attention. you cleared your throat and looked away with a small sigh. "thats alright, you seem like you wish to talk."
"not quite." you said.
"hm, fair enough, then what did you come in here for?"
you actually didnt know. maybe you just wanted to be around him because you didn't know who else to be around. maybe you wanted to tell him your distress about returning to inazuma after all that has happened - and maybe you want to cry in his arms because he just looks so comfortable to be with. you didn't know how to phrase all of it, so you just said one of it. "i came in here in hopes to think."
"think? of what?"
"inazuma."
kazuha went silent for a moment. "you ran away from inazuma just like i have, yet you seem more worried than i am."
"worried...?"
"don't be alarmed or take this the wrong way... but ive just been observing you time to time, and you always seem to be worried.. about something. it might be your past, and i dare not pry, but what is it that seems to be bothering you so much to make you look so worried all the time?" kazuha's words came out gentle, yet matter of factly.
you were silent, unable to tell him. where would you begin? what could you say? that you were once friends, best friends even, with the electro archon who lost all respects for visions and is an acting threat in inazuma at all times and you almost joined the vision hunt decree? like hell you could say that.
"i wish not to pry, you do not have to tell me if you do not want to. do so, in your own time," he said calmly, finally untying his hair completely. he shook his head to loosen some of his hair as he placed his rubber band down on the table beside him. "i should be going to bed now, we have a long trip ahead of us tomorrow, you should sleep too."
he got up from his seat and started to walk past you, but you didn't really want to stop speaking to him soon.
"kazuha wait," you stopped him just as he was about to leave for the door. "could we... talk?"
kazuha smiled. "but of course y/n." he returned to his seat and sat down as he waited for you to speak. you were fidgeting with your fingers, unable to find the right words, but you just wanted him to know something - maybe even one subtle hint that you had been friends with baal and that he should have every reason to trust or loathe you.
"kazuha i-"
"AYO KIDDOS WHAT YOU BOTH DOING IN HERE?" beidou burst through the door, scaring both of you up from your seats. you tripped over your ankle and fell into his arms as he caught you.
"woah, careful y/n.." kazuha blushed a little as he held you in between his arms. beidou saw this and smirked a little.
"ahhhh i see. sorry for interrupting a romantic moment~ and kazuha, you're doing good son!" with that, beidou slammed the door shut and you two could hear her footsteps trotting up the stairs again.
"w-well... that was... awkward..." kazuha stated, and when he looked down, he caught a glimpse of the massive scar behind your neck. you caught his gaze, and while he averted it, you moved your hair back in place. "im.. sorry. i didn't mean to stare."
"it's alright." you said. kazuha let go of you and the both of you just sat back down in the chairs again. you sighed as you played with your hair, and kazuha looked at you.
"if you don't mind me asking, how did it happen?"
"hm?"
"your scar."
you rubbed the back of your neck, and all of sudden it felt like something zapped through your mind. just as quick as it came - it was gone. you saw baal's sword for a split second, and it sent a wave of panic through you. you looked distressed, and kazuha stood up a little.
he came towards you as you shook, a little shaken up from the whole trauma from the past with baal. you remembered it clearly now - how she and you drew your weapons against each other. you tried to barricade yourself behind the massive hordes of boulders and rocks, keeping yourself safe - but baal was just too strong.
you remembered her words, so precisely...
"now you shall perish."
it reminded you how close you were to losing your life that day, as she had sliced your neck of all places. she could have severed off your head, but you managed to dodge half of her katana. you felt like it was the hardest thing to forget - yet, you wanted to say it.
"y/n... are you alright?"
you came to your sense and realise kazuha had came even closer to you than before. your eyes were wet with tears, and you had to turn away to wipe them all away. you couldn't believe you had started crying, in front of kazuha. "i-im fine i just... i was reminded of what happened."
"you don't have to tell me y/n it's fine, don't feel forced... thats the last thing i want you to feel." kazuha said gently, moving his hand to your head as he stroked it. "if this is the reason you are so worried about returning back to inazuma, then i understand completely."
"im just scared."
kazuha didn't wait anymore, he just pulled you into his arms. he hugged you close to him, and you refused to wait either. you locked your arms around him tightly as you cried into his shoulder. it was too much for you, and you needed to feel like it was alright.
"im here y/n... im here."
kazuha let you cry for a few minutes before he set you down on his bed. you sat beside him as you wiped your face. his bed was soft, and you felt like sleeping in it. kazuha looked up at you as you finished wiping your tears.
"are you feeling better?"
you stayed silent, but nodded your head. kazuha said nothing more, and just waited for you to open up at your own time. you took a moment, but finally, after a while, you found the words. "i was almost killed for something, hence the scar."
kazuha was surprised at your answer. he wasn't expecting something to be so near death, but then again, if the scar had been on the back of your neck, it must have nearly been fatal. "it must have been terrible wasn't it..?"
"mmh."
"i am terribly sorry," he said gently, placing a hand on yours. "would you feel better if i made some herbal tea?"
you looked at him, confusion in your eyes. "but... isnt it too late now?"
he chuckled. "it's never too late for anything."
kazuha left the bed and began brewing some warm tea for you. he added his maple leaf remedy that was to add scent, and after he was done, he brought it over to you for tasting. of course, after a few sips, you loved it, and had asked for more.
about three cups later, you felt drowsy.
"i should.. probably return to my room now," you said tiredly as he stroked your head. "we will see each other tomorrow."
"if you're too tired, you can sleep here."
you blinked. "but then what about you?"
"the chair looks cozy enough."
"that wouldn't be right..."
kazuha smiled. "take it as a sorry present for asking you such a personal question earlier."
"but i-"
"no arguments y/n, you're sleeping in my bed and im sleeping on the chair," he smiled and got off the bed to resume his reading back on his chair. you adjusted your kimono and slipped under his covers. he smiled at you again. "get some sleep."
you nodded and tried to rest. the blankets and pillows reminded you of kazuha, and it felt like he was lying next to you, even if he was just a few feet apart.
you felt comforted by his scent, and you fell asleep.
