"Come in!" Peter called from his balcony, hearing a knock at his door.
"Happy birthday!" Edmund said, joining his brother outside.
Peter turned to face him, smiling. "Thanks, Edmund."
"What are you doing out here?" Edmund asked, leaning his arms against the railing.
Peter let out a sigh. "Just enjoying the cool, crisp, morning air, and some tea." He took a sip from his mug.
Edmund nodded, looking out at the woods for a moment, before turning to his brother. "I got you a present." He held out a small box towards Peter.
Peter smiled at him. "You didn't have to do that."
"Of course I did. It's your birthday, Peter!"
Peter chuckled, taking the box from him. Opening it, he found a necklace inside. On the chain, were two small replicas of his sword and his shield. "Edmund, this is beautiful."
Edmund smiled at him. "Thanks. I made it myself."
Peter's eyes widened and he looked up at his brother. "You made this?!"
"Yeah." Edmund breathed. "It took forever! But I finished it eventually. I wanted to make sure and get all the details and everything right."
"Wow." Peter said, looking down at the necklace and then back up at his brother. "This means so much to me, Ed. The fact that you made it yourself only makes it even more special. I'll treasure it forever." He smiled, before wrapping Edmund tightly in a hug.
Edmund rolled his eyes, but wrapped his arms around Peter anyway. He was also smiling slightly, but would never admit it. Today was Peter's birthday after all, he'd let him have a hug just this once.
"Thank you so much, Ed." Peter said.
Edmund smiled slightly. "You're welcome, Pete."
Peter smiled, before the two pulled apart. He then put the necklace on, looking down and admiring it, with a huge smile on his face.
"I'm so happy you like it." Edmund said.
"I love it." Peter said, looking up at his brother, a huge smile on his face. "It's amazing, and you did a such a wonderful job. They look exactly like my sword and shield."
"Thanks." Edmund said. "I worked really hard."
"Well, it payed off."
Edmund smiled at his brother.
Peter looked at Edmund for a moment before speaking. "You want to go for a walk?" He asked. "Just the two of us. In the woods maybe?"
Edmund furrowed his eyebrows. "Wouldn't you rather stay here and celebrate?"
Peter shook his head. "Susan and Lucy are throwing a party tonight, and they'll be plenty of time to celebrate then. Right now, I want to relax. And spend some quality time with my brother."
Edmund smiled at him. "I'd love to."
"Great!" Peter said. "Let's go."
~~~
About half an hour later, the boys were walking through the woods.
"So." Edmund said, after a while of comfortable silence. "Are you excited for your party tonight?"
Peter shrugged. "I get tired of all the parties sometimes. Just a hundred people who barely know me saying happy birthday. Plus it feels like we have parities all the time! I wouldn't mind a small party with just family and friends."
"Why don't you tell Susan and Lucy that?" Edmund asked.
"Susan loves planning parties. I don't want to upset her. I'd rather see her happy and suffer through the party than tell her I don't want one."
Edmund smiled at him. "You know, you really are an amazing brother, Peter."
Peter smiled down at him. "Thanks, Ed."
Edmund nodded.
"It's not all bad you know." Edmund said, after a few minutes of silence. "There's free food. And cake. I love me some cake."
Peter chuckled. "That's true, yeah. Although, I don't love food as much as you do."
"That's alright." Edmund said. "Nobody does."
Peter laughed slightly, rolling his eyes.
"What kind of cake are you having?" Edmund asked.
"Strawberry with chocolate frosting." Peter answered.
"Oooh." Edmund said. "That sounds-" but he stopped short, gasping instead when he tripped over a huge tree root, hitting the ground hard.
"Ed!" Peter said, kneeling down beside his brother.
Edmund gasped, slowly sitting up, holding tightly onto his ankle. "My ankle really hurts."
"Let me see." Peter said, slowly examining his brother's ankle. Edmund hissed when his brother touched it, causing Peter to sigh. "I think it's probably sprained."
Edmund sighed. "Well that's great."
"You think you can walk on it?" Peter asked.
"I'm not sure." Edmund said slowly. "I can try."
Peter nodded, helping his brother to his feet. But the second Edmund put weight on his ankle, he gasped in pain, falling to the ground again.
"Alright." Peter said gently. "It's alright. You okay?"
Edmund took a deep breath, shutting his eyes until the pain subsided. "Yeah, I'm alright. "
Peter nodded. "Good. I guess that's a no on the walking." He said, chuckling slightly.
Edmund smirked at him. "Yes, that's a no."
"Well then, there's only one option left." Peter said, standing up. "I have to carry you."
Edmund's eyes went so wide they could have popped right out of his head. "What?! No! You are not carrying me, Peter!"
"I don't think you really have a choice, Ed. We have to get you home, and how else are we supposed to do that?"
Edmund stared at him. "You walk home, bring back Phillip and then he can give me a ride to Cair."
Peter raised an eyebrow. "For one, that would take way too long. And for two, you really think you can climb onto Phillip with a sprained ankle?"
Edmund glared at his brother, before sighing. "No, probably not."
"Exactly. So just let me carry you, it will be fine."
"Peter, I am 16 years old! I am a king of Narnia! You are not under any circumstances going to carry me!"
Peter nodded slowly. "Okay." He said eventually.
"Thank you." Edmund breathed. "Now, I'm trying to think of a reasonable way to-" He gasped as Peter lifted him up from the ground and into his arms.
"What are you doing?!"
"Carrying you." Peter said simply, as he began walking.
"You just agreed not to!" Edmund said.
"I only said that so you would shut up and let me pick you up."
Edmund glared at him. "Peter Pevensie you put me down this instant!"
"Then what are you going to do, Ed? You can't walk. How do you expect to get back to Cair Paravel without walking?"
Edmund stared at Peter for a moment before burying his face into Peter's shoulder. "This is the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to me."
Peter chuckled, rolling his eyes. "Aren't you being a bit overdramatic, Edmund?"
"Peter!" Edmund exclaimed, moving to look at his brother. "I'm 16 years old, and a king! I do not want people to see me being carried by my brother!"
"Relax." Peter told him. "It's not a big deal. I'm only carrying you because you sprained your ankle."
Edmund sighed, burying his face into Peter's shoulder again.
"It's not the end of the world." Peter told him.
"It's the end of my world." Edmund said.
Peter couldn't help but laugh at this, rolling his eyes too.
~~~
"See?" Peter said, once they got to the castle. "That wasn't so bad."
"Not yet." Edmund said. "Now's the part where everyone sees that you're carrying me."
"Oh, I'm sure there won't even be that many people around." Peter told him.
Edmund sighed, dreading what would happen as Peter walked through those doors.
"Surprise!!!"
Peter's eyes went wide, as he saw all his close friends and family in the room, he actually knew everyone here! He smiled as he looked at all the party decorations, and all his friends, and people who really knew and cared about him. He definitely hadn't expected this.
"Wow!" Peter said, smiling widely. "Thank you guys so much! This is amazing!"
Everyone smiled at him, before yelling "Happy Birthday!"
Peter laughed, thanking them, before looking down at his brother, who was glaring daggers at him.
"I'm sure there won't be anyone around. Just all of our closest friends and family in Narnia!" Edmund said sarcastically, sounding very annoyed.
Peter only laughed at his brother, but looked up when Susan and Lucy ran over.
"What happened?" Susan asked.
"Are you alright, Ed?" Lucy asked worriedly.
"I'm fine, Lucy don't worry. I just sprained my ankle is all."
Lucy let out a relived sigh, and Susan nodded. "You can have a drop of my cordial?" Lucy offered.
"No thanks." Edmund said. "It's just a sprained ankle, I'll be okay."
"Ed-" Peter began.
"No." Edmund said. "Save it for more serious injuries. Please."
Peter seemed very hesitant, but eventually nodded.
"Alright. I'll take you up to your room."
"Please." Edmund begged.
His siblings chuckled, before Peter headed up the stairs and to his brothers room.
Once there, Peter gently laid Edmund in his bed, before carefully removing his shoes, to put less pressure on his ankle.
"Feeling any better?" Peter asked, sitting next to his brother.
Edmund sighed. "It still hurts."
"Want me to get a healer?" Peter asked.
Edmund shook his head. "No, it's alright."
Peter raised an eyebrow.
"Well there's nothing they can do anyway." Edmund exclaimed.
Peter sighed. "Fine, I'll get you some ice, and hopefully the swelling will go down. But I might make you see a healer later."
Edmund sighed but decided not to argue, watching Peter leave.
He looked up when his brother returned a few minutes later with some ice.
"Thanks." Edmund said, before placing it on his ankle. He hissed slightly at first, but relaxed after a moment when it seemed to be helping.
"No problem." Peter told him.
They sat in silence for a while, before Edmund spoke. "Thank you for- for carrying me. I know that probably wasn't easy on you. And my complaining probably didn't help."
Peter smiled at him. "You're welcome, Ed. It was no trouble at all."
"Really?" Edmund asked.
"Nope." Peter breathed. "It was only a couple of miles. Plus you're very slender."
Edmund glared at him. "Oh shut up."
Peter laughed.
"I guess I kinda ruined your surprise party, huh?" Edmund said.
"Why in the world would you think that?!" Peter said.
"I sprained my ankle and you had to carry me home. Then it was my own fault that everyone saw you carrying me, since we threw you a surprise party. Now your party is down there, and you're stuck up here with me."
Peter sighed, moving to sit at the head of the bed with his brother. "It's not your fault, Ed. You tripped. It was an accident. And you haven't ruined my party at all."
"I haven't?" Edmund asked.
"Nope." Peter told him. "I have all night to party. I'd much rather spend some time with you first."
"Really?"
"Of course." Peter said, smiling. "You're my brother, Edmund. I love every second we spend together."
Edmund smiled up at him. "I do too. And thank you."
"You're welcome." Peter said. "I wouldn't want to spend my birthday any other way."
Edmund smiled at him. "I wouldn't want you to either. I love you, Peter. Happy birthday."
"Thanks." Peter replied. "I love you too, Ed. So, so much."
"Of course you do. I'm me."
Peter laughed at this. "And I wouldn't want you any other way."
