Song: VANO300 - running away

•••
Steve felt you tensing up the second those men stepped through the doors to this party. Your grip on him tightened and a shocked look spread on your face.
'You okay doll?'
'Are those your men?' You ask nervously, your eyes strained on the two.
'No, no they're not.. why?' Steve frowns at the sudden behaviour change. 'I need a second... I'm sorry...' you hurriedly say before bolting towards the bathroom.
'Y/n!' He yells after you but it's no use, the ringing in your ears overshadows every sound in your environment.
You lock the door behind you before you let yourself fall against it. Your breath comes out uneven. Flashes brighten your mind of those two men. It's like everything comes at you in full force. Those two men are not Steve's, which means that it's probably not Steve who murdered Tony. Right?
You should be happy now, given that You and Steve have been dating for a few weeks. You love him.
Then another thought comes to mind, what if you just come clean to him? Tell him you're working with the police but they obviously lied to you, maybe he will still want you? It's selfish to think that.
'Doll?' A knock on the door is the only sound that reaches you, 'doll are you in here?'
'Y-yeah...' you stutter with a hoarse voice. 'I'm in here...just give me a second...'
'I'll wait here...'
It frustrates how easy it is to fall in love with him when he's all sweet and charming like this. You don't get to think about it though because your panic attack is still in full swing. The lock suddenly moved a bit and you step back from the door, just in time to not get hit by it.
'Hey.. you okay?' His eyes are set on worry.
'He told me those weren't his men... and if he's telling the truth, that means you've been lying to me...' you tap your nails on the metal table.
The cops swallow visibly at your comment, the rage on your face tells them enough, Steve may be dangerous but you're even worse. They know that because they've read your track record.
'He's lying to you... those are indeed his men... and we have more evidence, all collected by the information you've given us.. you're doing amazing... and then the relationship? Bravo!'
'I'm glad you think this is a game officer McNeil...' you mutter under your breath. 'I want to see the evidence..'
Jenkins hands over the perfectly neat binder, you open it and let your eyes roam over all the different files, pictures and notes.
Seeing the evidence gathered against him is overwhelming. Perhaps he played you just like you played him, well... it's not really playing when the feelings are real.
Your gut tells you however, that you need to trust Steve in this. He was besties with your brother, those men weren't his, and he has been transparent with you as far as you know. But then again... this new evidence isn't proving your point.
'Just confirms what we already knew, right?' Jenkins asks and you nod before laying the folder back on the table.
'Does he have any suspicion that you're working with us?' McNeil asks.
'No... no he doesn't...' it pains you to say those words. It's a cruel reminder of what you're doing to him, but with this new information about the two men actually being his, instead did what Steve told you, it makes you angry.
He lied, just when you thought he wouldn't, he lied. Ut brings tears to your eyes to now find out that the hope you had, the hope that he didn't order the hit on your brother, vanished with a simple file.
'We will make his arrest at the party this Friday.. we will have a car ready to pick you up and escort you to safety.. we're almost a hundred percent sure that Mr. Rogers will kill you the second he finds out you've been working with us...' McNeil keeps talking, you barely register anything though.
'Miss Stark... are you alright?' They both tilt their heads at you.
'I'll take a better look at this.. at home.. I'll make sure he doesn't see this...' you grab the file and make your way out of the office.
You're out of breath, teary-eyed and you feel betrayed, it's hypocritical. You betray him and yet you're the one feeling betrayed.
You walk down the street, keeping an eye out for any of Steve's men. Bucky has his suspicions so you have to be wary of him. Luckily for you, you haven't been spot by that police station when you reach your car.
You get in and take a deep breath. He couldn't have. Come on Y/n, he couldn't have! It wouldn't make any sense! He doesn't have motive, your gut is telling you you're wrong!
You open the file again. You read through the files again and again. Harsh tears drop on them but you don't care, you need to find a mistake. There has to be an indication that they're lying about him, that you're the one who betrayed him, as wrong as it sounds.

'Hey baby how-' Steve greets you as you walk into his office unannounced.
'You lied to me..' you throw the file in front of him while his eyes go big.
His smile falters when he sees the pure rage written all over you. His eyes move to the folder, it's a police document, he recognises it.
'Those men were yours.. they worked for you at the time of my brothers death.. and you lied to me!' Your fist slams on the desk.
'Where did you get this?' His face hardens once he realises whom you must've gotten this from.
'The police... you know, I felt guilty this whole time.. because I thought you did it, so I was working with the police to put you behind bars forever, but then you showed me it couldn't be true, I fell for you...and now I find out you've been lying to me?'
'That's very hypocritical of you to say! You've been working with the cops behind my back!' He pushes his chair back and stands up.
'What was I supposed to do?! You clearly orders the hit on my brother and got away with it once already! I can't let you get away!'
'I did not kill your brother! This is all fake evidence! Those two men never worked for me! I keep record of everyone, name and picture.. they're not in it, I did not kill Tony! He was my best friend!' Steve raises his voice.
'Then why is this all still pointing to you?! Why when I get a small spark of hope that it isn't you, does it get debunked?!' You throw up your hands in defeat. 'I was happy to hear you say those words come out of your mouth at the party, that those weren't your men! I was glad that the man I love wasn't the one that ordered the hit on my brother...only to find out that you've been lying to me...'
'I am not lying y/n.. I am not the one working with the police to get evidence from a man that didn't commit the crime!' He walks around his desk and is now standing in front of you, the kind Steve long gone. 'I should kill you for this...'
'Then do it... make me end up like my brother did... successfully make an end to the Stark bloodline!' You snap at him. 'And then to think that I fell for you..'
'If that was even real..'
'Oh it was... until I read the files... you know, I stopped giving them the right information after a while...' you answer.
He roughly grabs you by the back of the neck and pulls you closer. He grabs the knife from his desk and pushes it against your neck.
'Tell me the truth Rogers... I'm going to die anyway... so no point in lying... did you or did you not kill my brother?' You breathe, a line tear slides down your cheek.
'I did not kill him Y/n...' Steve sternly replies before he drops the knife on his desk again and lets you go. 'Hè was my friend.. he was more like family to me...' Steve's attitude softens.
He looks hurt as well, the guilt settles in with you again and with good reason. He told you the truth, he did not do it and still you betrayed him. His trust.
More tears roll down your cheeks, you hastily wipe them away. Your eyes avert to anywhere but Steve's eyes.
You're both left in an uncomfortable silence. You just dropped the huge bomb on him, the woman he loves snitching to the cops behind his back. So You both just stand there, opposite of each other, not even daring to look.
Steve gets it, deep down. You were raised in this lifestyle, you wanted out, you get sucked right back in not knowing who to even trust.
'Did you mean those things you said to me? When you told me you loved me?' Steve can't help but ask.
'Yes... I didn't lie about that..' you mutter back. 'It wasn't supposed to happen...but I fell for you..I love you... not that it will fix anything right now... I've been so fucking dumb..and on top of that, I snitched on you..'
'Not the greatest combo...' he replies.
'No..I'm sorry... I wanted to catch the person that did this so fucking bad that I.. I guess I turned to the person I believed did it.. at first.. I mean now I'm convinced you didn't...'
'Those cops played you.. I'm pretty sure they did it..'
'What?' Your head snaps to his.
'I uh, did some research on my own... and you don have any right to get mad at me for it..' you blocks you from any kind of anger from you. He's got a point.
'I invited them to the party this Friday...'
'The police will also be there, they're planning to arrest you..' you swallow down the huge lump in your throat.
'We just have to be more prepared then...look, I am going to be the biggest idiot of the century..' he gently grabs your hand. 'But we need to finish this together.. doesn't mean I am not mad at you anymore I just.. I love you... and I get why you did what you did... at least you were honest enough to admit it...'
You nod while he pulls your arm. 'I'm sorry about the knife...'
'It's nothing I didn't deserve...' you smile a little which he copied with ease.
'What do you say? We double cross them?' He asks.
'Oh yeah... we will double cross the shut out of them, they will never see it coming..'
He suddenly leans forward to push his lips against yours in a passionate kiss. You lean back with a shocked look.
'What? You look hot when you're angry...' He shrugs.
