Giselle Daniels

"What are we supposed to do without a tech van?"

Charlie sighed, avoiding her eyes. He started slowly pacing across the floors of the quiet lobby of their hotel.

"I don't know... I don't know."

Giselle looked at Vanessa, who was on the phone with Bourne across the room. Matthew was sitting on the couch across from her, she could tell his mind was drifting off to sleep.

An older gentleman in a uniform came over holding out cards in his hands.

"So sorry for the delay, we didn't think you would get here this early. Here are your cards for your hotel rooms. The numbers for each room are on the cards. Have a great evening."

Giselle thanked the man and received her keycard. She watched as the man went around and gave Charlie and Matthew their cards.

Vanessa seemed to be making her way back to the rest of the group with an undecided look on her face.

"So? What did he say?" Giselle asked when Vanessa reached them.

She sighed before saying anything.

"Not much, I can tell you that. He sounded so stressed out, I'm not sure what's going on up there."

Giselle kept watching her best friend as she grabbed the luggage and hauled it towards her side.

"So nothing about a tech van?"

Vanessa shook her head. "I think it'll be best that we let the inspectors do their job, wait for a call from Bourne and then see what we can do to continue."

Charlie made his slow paces back towards their group. "Today's already Friday, Sunday is just a day away and we don't even know where this group is."

Giselle looked down at her feet. Charlie was right. They were all so clueless, with no sense of direction. She felt like they were in this circle that kept repeating and this mission was getting nowhere.

Matthew suddenly got up and grabbed his suitcase and backpack. "Well, we have tomorrow to work on it, but for now we need to grab something to eat and get some rest."

"The buffet is closed and all of the restaurants are about to close at this hour."

"Room service?"

Giselle grabbed her backpack. "You guys go ahead, I'm not that hungry. I think I'm just going to call it a night."

"Are you sure?" Vanessa asked, looking intently into her eyes.

"Yeah, goodnight."

"Okay... goodnight."

She took ahold of the handle to her suitcase and dragged it across the floor to the elevators.

There was a ding! from the elevator and the doors opened.

"Giselle, waiiit," Charlie came flying in before the doors shut closed.

"Sorry, I didn't see you."

"I called your name like three times."

"Oh... did you? Sorry."

Charlie stepped closer to her and leaned in. Giselle observed his arm as it reached across from her. Suddenly, it got warm in the elevator. He pressed a button with a five on it on the board.

Giselle cleared her throat, looking straight to avoid his eyes. "You could have told me to press that."

"Not sure if you would have heard me," he leaned away as the elevator started to go up.

Giselle's face dropped back into a frown.

"So, are you going to tell me what's wrong or is this going to be one of those silent elevator rides? "

"I'm just tired."

"You do realize lying is a sin, right."

Giselle inhaled a deep breath. "Everything's fine."

No, in fact, nothing was fine. Charlie was right, there was something wrong. Giselle was exhausted, but more emotionally than physically. The last thing she wanted to do was have a conversation about it. Irritation was on the rise whenever she got frustrated.

Another chime went off in the elevator to Giselle's floor.

"Alright, fine, if you don't want to talk about it, I don't want to pressure you."

Giselle grabbed her suitcase and headed for the opening doors.

"But, Gi," Charlie reached for her arm, "know that I'm here if you need to talk."

Giselle looked at him straight in the eyes.

"Goodnight," she then turned and stepped out fully, hearing the doors close again.

Maybe if you didn't keep anything from me, I would be able to be more open to you.

Charlie Huntington

Why is she acting like this?

That was his last thought before the elevator stopped another time to pick some other people up. The small elevator became crowded and there the blonde guy was, standing backed into the corner with the look of "help me" printed on his face.

Once he was freed and was able to breath again, he turned down the hall trying to find his room.

1367.... 1368.... 1369...

A door opened as he was passing, a few giggling women came out of the door and started to parade his way.

"Hey handsome, where are you going?" One of the women stopped dead in from of him and started checking him out.

"Just to my room," Charlie said through gritted teeth.

"What's your name, cutie?" Another one called.

"Not-your-type," he tried making his way through the women.

"Oh, I see, blondie's afraid of having a good time."

Charlie stayed quiet, trying to harmlessly push his way out while the women kept throwing their comments at him.

"Listen, I'm just trying to get to my room, will you please be so kind to let me through?"

All women piped down and moved to the side to let him through.

"Whatever, you're not even cute, let's go girls."

Charlie sighed, finally passing them.

Unlocking the door with his keycard, he made his way inside the room.

He dumped his backpack on the bed and put his suitcase to the side for now. He opened his backpack and pulled out his charger and a half-empty bottle of water.

Plugging in his dead phone, he then dumped out the water and threw the plastic in the trash.

Returning to the side table where he saw his phone turn back on, the notifications came pouring in.

50 new text messages and 11 missed calls.

He scrolled through them, seeing that his mom called him about twice last night. He decided to hear her voice would be exactly what he needed right about now.

To his surprise, she answered on the first ring.

"Hi, sweetheart!"

He started to choke up when he heard the cheery woman on the other line.

"Hi mom, how are you?"

In the short time they chatted, Charlie had realized that he had never missed his mother this much in his life.

"So, how's my little spy out there? You keepin' safe?"

He chuckled. "Yeah, mom, I'm keeping safe."

"Good, good. How about that girlfriend of yours?"

Charlie didn't say anything.

"She came over yesterday, wondering about you."

"Oh, yeah?"

"Yeah, she said you weren't really talking to her anymore, you okay?"

"I've just been busy, ma, that's all."

"Right, right, of course."

It gave him more pain when he didn't say anything about the real situation he was having with his girlfriend. His mother had always been the woman that would help him and give him advice. He never realized how bad he had missed her until this moment.

"Listen, Charlie, you keep on doing the Lord's work, and I promise you everything will turn out fine."

"I know mom, thank you."

"We all miss you, Charlie, and we love you very much."

"I love you too, mom."

The call ended and for a moment Charlie just sat there, taking it all in.

I can't keep doing this.
