The second they'd touched down, Alec took Serena to the infirmary, the girl still not feeling well after they'd returned from the realm of demons.
And immediately after that visit, they began planning a party, with a bit of Magnus's help of course. And they sent out fire message invites to everyone, even Imogen in Alicante who they called for a matter of utter importance and urgency.
Even Luke was invited, the wolf that had been mysteriously MIA for days, had apparently been with the Praetor Lupus, having injected himself with the last vial of the Glorious serum and becoming a Shadowhunter again. The last vial was given to Maia and Jordan by Izzy, but both of them decided not to take it, especially Maia, who was now leader of the New York werewolf pack.
Clary, while ecstatic for Luke, who had then gone to speak to Serena and Alec about their party and about working with the New York Institute again, then followed a bright heavenly light into her room, a light that only she could see. And where she came face to face with her mother.
"Mom?" she asked with tears in her eyes as Jocelyn Fairchild smiled at her.
"Hello, sweetheart."
"Is that really you?" Clary questioned, eyes growing foggier, and the woman nodded as Clary rushed to her, wrapping her in a hug.
"I am so proud of you, Clary. Of the woman you've become," Jocelyn said as she held her daughter.
"Mom, I miss you so much," Clary cried as she faced her mother.
"I miss you too. More than you know," Jocelyn replied. "But that's not why I'm here. Angel Raziel sent me," she explained, and Clary's eyes widened.
"Raziel? Why?"
"He believes that if you'll listen to anyone, it's me. Those thousands of years ago, he gave Jonathan Shadowhunter each of his angelic runes for a specific purpose. Clary, the fact that you can create your own runes, without Raziel's blessing. Well, he does not look kindly on that."
"But the runes I draw, Mom, they help people, they help Shadowhunters," Clary defended.
"That may be true, but you've been taking advantage of your gifts, you have been selfish with them," Jocelyn replied as she pulled her daughter to sit on the bed with her. "You felt the angels' resistance, but you pushed through anyway. You drew a rune to paralyze Jace and Alec so that you could break your brother out of prison. And when you drew your Necromancy rune on Valentine, not only did you do it to negotiate your sentence with Jia, but you broke a fundamental tenet. "The dead shall stay dead." And now this Alliance rune, uniting Shadowhunters with demonic blood. And for Raziel, that was the last straw."
Clary was beyond scared of what her mother was going to say next, eyes still puffy and red as tears threatened to fall.
"I did it to save my friends lives."
"I understand," Jocelyn nodded. "Clary, your compassion is one of the many great traits about you. But the angels, they see it differently. They perceive you as disrupting the natural order."
Clary scoffed lightly as she stood. "So, they sent you here just to scold me? Are Jace and Serena getting the same scolding?"
"No. No," Jocelyn said as she stood. "Jace has no way of using his gift to disrupt the natural order. And Serena has proved her selflessness. There hasn't been a single time where she used her voice for a selfish purpose, it was always to help others. And the portal she created and the wings she grew, were all one-time gifts, granted by the angels as a reward for that selflessness and only in times of dire trouble. As for you, the angels sent me to tell you not to draw another rune of your own ever again."
"What?"
"If you do, as quick as they gave you your gifts, they will take them away."
And the light was blinding as Clary cried and her mother disappeared.
