I finished vomiting in the corner and Lenny was rubbing circles on my back. I turned my head a little and saw the half eaten corpse on the floor and then I began to vomit again. I was scavenging the houses at the moment with Lenny and Robert was scavenging the one next door. I was still trying to get used to all the zombie shit. It was pretty...hard. I guess..
"It's okay...let it all out," he encouraged and then he looked behind him as well. I didn't need to see his face because he stiffened all of a sudden. I went still and turned around slowly. There was a zombie walking by the open window and then slowly it turned its head and stared in our direction. A deep moaning sound began to escape its mouth and it began trying to climb in through the window.
"Shit! We need to shut this one up," Lenny murmured and then looked around the room. He saw a bag full of golf clubs and pulled one out. "You might wanna turn sweetness..."
I nodded and then turned around. Even if I wasn't watching I still heard the gut wrenching snap of the neck and the thud as the body fell to the floor. I slowly turned around and peered at Lenny who was standing by the zombie with a smile of pure triumph on his face.
"Well now that that's done."
I nodded and then looked down at my toes.
"Look, you'll get used to it. Yeah at first you feel lost and blame yourself for alot of things. Just keep thinking.....about the positive side. You get to still live. And maybe....that's what your parents would have wanted. For you to live on and be happy. Hell, maybe your not happy right now. But the feeling will come....eventually."
I nodded and then smiled at him. I ran and gave him a hug. At first he stiffened, as if he wasn't used to the affection. He hugged me back and I felt him smile.
I smiled to myself and continued staring at the ceiling. I was waiting for the throbbing feeling from my leg to go away. So far....I wasn't having any luck.
Mark hadn't come back yet and I was so anxious.....I looked down at my hands and saw that without knowing it I had chewed my fingernails slowly. ERGHH! I hated when I did that.
The only thing that filled the silence in the room was my breathing and the wind outside. I looked over at then door and propped myself on my elbow. "Open....stupid door." I muttered and then fell back on the bed. Why wasn't he here yet?!?!?
I decided I just couldn't wait and sat up slowly. I stood up slowly and didn't bother putting on my shoes. It would take forever if I even tried.
I limped slowly to the door and opened it. I turned and was about to walk out when I ran into someones chest. I looked up and saw a grim looking Stephen staring back at me.
"Where are you going?" he asked me.
"I umm....was going to the kitchen."
"Your lying."
"What are you talking about?" I laughed nervously.
"Your going to try to find Sam."
"pshh...no...I'm just simply starving. Don't get your panties in a knot."
"Your not going to find her. She's not here."
"She's in the barn." I laughed and then turned around to see his facial expression. I saw the surprise in his eyes but then he masked it and gave me a calm face.
"Whatever floats your boat...but you can't see her!"
"Why?!?!"
"Because it's not safe..."
"I'M HER BEST FRIEND! SHE'S LIKE A SISTER TO ME! I HAVE TO BE THERE FOR HER! PLEASE...JUST LET ME SEE HER."
He shook his head. "This is the end of the conversation. Now go eat or something. But...you can't leave this house."
I walked away in the direction of the kitchen. They were treating me like a little kid! I had taken care of the group WAY before we found them again. I sighed and continued walking until I was near another door. I wasn't made to follow the rules.
I was made to break them.
I crept across the lawn and had the barn in sight. They had almost everyone keeping watch around it. I cursed under my breath and looked around. There was no way in hell I would be able to enter that barn with out them noticing me. I began to walk away and then I looked around. I saw the trail that led to the field and curiosity got the best of me. I walked the way I had memorized and felt my breathing become heavier. My leg was starting to really hurt..
Your going to hurt yourself more
I sighed and knew that little annoying voice in my head was right... yet so wrong! Maybe I could find out what's wrong with Sam. I continued walking and then decided I should sit down.
Remember last time you sat down?
I flinched and then decided it was better for me to continue walking. I came to the clearing and walked over to the tent. I looked around and grabbed a fistful of the papers. The smell of decomposition still filled every corner of the tent and I grabbed an available chair to take it outside.
Enhanced Virus
So far our test subjects have vomited severely and had a weird case of blood eyes. Well, there eyes were blood shot and they were shedding tears. Except these tears were in blood. We called it the blood eye for short. Doctor Augustine said to not be alarmed and said that was a natural part of the process. The test subjects then develop a fever and are caught between a dream state. They begin to hallucinate. After that they go into a dream like state. Coma. So far, only three of the subjects have awoken and all died a few hours later. Their bodies could not adapt to the strain of the virus and gave out. We are still testing and hoping to get some positive affects.
I set the paper down and then remember the other papers I had read. The man had said that some of them survived and that they escaped. What if Sam....got the enhanced virus?
That would mean...
No.
I stared down at the papers in my hand as if they were burning them and threw them on the floor. Why me?
I looked up and noticed it was beginning to get dark. Crap. I could not be out after dark. I began to get up slowly and I fell down.
"SHIT!"
I looked down at my leg and then winced when I tried to move it. Did that mean I broke it again? I looked around wildly and the wind was beginning to scare me. It was blowing hard and was beginning to make howling noises. I looked around frantically for something to help me and I found nothing.
I heard the bushes rustling and pulled out the crossbow. I aimed in that direction and waited for a zombie to pop out. Instead a bunny hopped out. I smiled to myself and let out a chuckle. All of a sudden a zombie came out of no where and snatched the bunny off of the floor. With an inhuman like force it bit into the bunny and I watched as it was devoured. The red blood dripped from the creatures mouth. I shuddered in horror and was about to aim when something stopped me. This zombie....well I don't even know if it was a zombie. It was...well...it wasn't moaning. And it didn't look like a walking corpse. It noticed me and then our eyes met. The eyes widened in surprise and then they looked around.
It ran away and left me there with my mouth gaping open.
What the fuck is going on?
I heard more movement and expected the thing to come back and instead Mark walked into the clearing. He ran over to my side and looked down at me.
"Are you okay? Come on we have to go!"
I nodded numb and then let him help me up. "How did you find me?"
"Doesn't matter right now."
"Hmm."
"We think we know what's wrong with Sam."
"Do you now?"
"Yeah....they think she may be infected...but not the normal way."
"Did you see her?"
"Yeah....it wasn't really....what they would want you to see."
I nodded absentmindedly. "Take me to her."
"What?"
"Please take me to her.."
"Look...I don't think it's a good idea for you to see her like this...-"
"I SAID FUCKEN TAKE ME TO HER!"
