Author's Note: As the title suggests, this is an omegaverse fic. (If you don't know, google it.) I tried to make it as PG-13 as possible, but obviously, because it's omegaverse, it still gets weird. Gomen.
Every human fell into one of three categories: an alpha, a beta, or an omega. This classification described your temperament, of sorts, as well as your role in the species. You were born with it, just like your eye color or hair texture. And each class had its trademark characteristics.
Alphas were the dominant members of society. They were the leaders, the protectors, and they tended to be relatively more aggressive. Reproductively speaking, they would partner with omegas – or in rare cases, betas – to further the species.
Betas were quite middle-of-the-road. They had a relatively mild temperament, and were usually great friends or advisors. Interestingly, something in their genetic code made them unable to breed with omegas, and only rarely with alphas.
Omegas arguably had the most difficult spot in the hierarchy. They were of a softer and gentler temperament, which made them wonderful at nurturing children. Regardless of their gender, they were the ones who carried the offspring during pregnancy. They were also the submissive ones when it came to reproductive acts.
However, where omegas really got the short end of the stick was when they went into heat. It happened once every three months, and it often started without warning. At this time, it was dangerous for them to even leave their house, because their body gave off a distinctive scent that attracted any alpha in the area. There were drugs that minimized the pheromones, but sometimes, the pheromones were too intense for the drugs to be effective. It wasn't uncommon for unmated omegas to be raped during heat by any less-savory alphas who happened to be around.
Generally speaking, everyone adhered to the stereotypes of their class. You, however, were a bit of an oddball. Even though the doctors swore that you were an alpha, most of the time, you displayed the mild temperament of a beta. The only exception was when you were protecting your omega friends – which, unfortunately, you had to do on multiple occasions. In those cases, you displayed an aura so cold and terrifying that no one would dare to challenge you.
Yet, even the fact that you were protecting omegas without being at all attracted by their pheromones was unusual. It wasn't like you were controlling the impulse or anything – you genuinely never felt any desire toward an omega in heat. You didn't see a reason to. After all, none of the omegas you came across were your mate – the one person who nature had designated to be yours forever – so you didn't see any point in tumbling them, especially if they didn't want it. And that apparent dominance of cold logic over instinct in your personality made you something of a black sheep among alphas.
However, your milder temperament didn't stop you from enlisting in the military. In fact, the military ended up being the perfect environment for you, because you could remain cool and level-headed when necessary, while your protective instincts kept your comrades safe. And when you chose to join the Scout Regiment after graduating top of your class, they were quite obviously thrilled to have you.
Now, it had been one year since you first donned those wings, and two years since Shiganshina fell. You were a lieutenant in the fifth squadron, having quickly climbed the ranks after proving yourself in the field. A lot of the cadets who enlisted with you hadn't even survived this long.
It was another Friday night, and like most of the soldiers in the regiment, you went into Trost to blow off some steam after a hard week of training. You were accompanied by two of your comrades, who were also your close friends. The first, Rin, was an alpha like you. The second, Anelise, was Rin's omega.
Initially, you had been surprised by Anelise's status, since omegas typically didn't work at all – especially not after they were mated, and they especially didn't join the military. Of course, you personally were not against such things; you believed that omegas should be able to live and work like everyone else did. However, with the volatility of their heat cycles, most omegas found it...safer...to stay at home. If anything, they worked as receptionists or waiters at some respectable establishment – someplace that had a saferoom they could run to if they suddenly went into heat. And they took suppressors – drugs that stopped their pheromone production – so their scent wouldn't attract alphas.
Yet, despite the difficulty, Anelise seemed to be managing quite well. Being mated helped, because once an alpha had claimed an omega, their scent stayed with said omega – acting as a warning for all other alphas to stay away. And of course, Rin almost never left Anelise's side, displaying the trademark protective behavior of an alpha for their mate, and sometimes displaying an alpha's trademark overprotective behavior as well. In fact, you were pretty sure that Rin wouldn't have let you near Anelise if you didn't act so much like a mild, unthreatening beta.
After passing the night at your regular haunt, the three of you began your return journey to the barracks. Yet, as you strolled through the lamplit streets of Trost, chatting and laughing, something caught your attention.
"Hey, Rin..." you asked slowly, "you smell that, don't you?"
Rin sniffed the air, then immediately stiffened. "Yeah."
Your brow furrowed worriedly. The scent that now permeated the air was, unfortunately, very familiar to you. Somewhere nearby, an omega had just gone into heat.
"You and Anelise go on ahead," you instructed Rin. "I'm going to make sure everything's okay."
The other alpha nodded. "Be careful."
As your friends continued down the street, you took an adjacent one, following the scent to its source. You normally didn't like to stick your nose in other people's business, but it was so common for omegas to be molested that you felt like you had to check on this one. If they were with friends or a mate, you would leave it alone. But if they weren't...sometimes, a decent stranger willing to walk them home was a saving grace for an omega.
As you drew closer, the scent of pheromones grew stronger – so much so that it shocked you, because you had never observed an omega producing this much before. There was also a separate aroma that was incredibly sweet but unfamiliar to you. On top of that, you could smell another alpha nearby. It was possible that it was only the omega's mate, but you needed to be sure. So you kept going, all the way to a dimly lit, narrow side street.
You picked up on two male voices seconds before you rounded the corner.
"What are you doing? Get off, you pig!"
"It's alright, isn't it? You're an omega. You must be used to these things."
"No...I don't want..."
"Come on. It seems like you're suffering. I just want to help, so be a good boy and hold still."
"Hey!" you barked, sprinting around the corner and skidding to a stop mere feet away from them. You locked eyes with the alpha and gave him your most threatening glare as you growled, "He said no. So leave."
As usual, your unmatched dominance had the pig scurrying away with his tail between his legs – metaphorically speaking. You turned to the omega, who was still cowering against the wall, looking mussed and shaken, but otherwise unharmed. That was good. It seemed you had arrived in time.
He was shorter than average, but you could tell there was a lot of strength in his petite frame. His clothes were a nondescript shirt, vest, and trousers – something that any commoner might wear, or a soldier taking a night off. He had smooth, pale skin and onyx hair styled in an undercut. And his eyes...stars, they were gorgeous, though the dark circles underneath indicated that he wasn't getting nearly enough sleep. But even so, he was easily the most beautiful male you had ever seen.
You opened your mouth to ask if he was alright, but the words caught in your throat when you got a whiff of his scent. This close, it hit you like a punch to the gut. And you suddenly realized what that unfamiliar, sweet aroma was.
You were staring at your mate.
Mates were chosen at birth by the same force that separated humans into alphas, betas, and omegas. Instinct told you when you found them, and the impulse was incredibly strong. You couldn't help wanting to be with them, wanting to give them the world – because they were made for you, and you for them.
The omega seemed to realize it in the same second that you did. He lunged at you, whimpering and looking up with a tear-filled, pleading gaze as he begged, "Please...please...it's you...please..."
He must have been overwhelmed by the effects of heat, and now that he'd discovered you were his mate, you were the only one who could help him. However, being submissive in nature, he needed your permission before he could do anything. So here he was, clutching you for dear life, even though he didn't know a thing about you.
You inhaled sharply, tasting his scent in the air. And for the first time in your life, you did feel desire for an omega. This omega. Your omega.
However, because he was yours, you wanted to treat him well. He didn't deserve to do this in a filthy alley with someone whose name he didn't even know. He deserved all the care and comfort and respect in the world.
"Shh..." you cooed, petting his hair soothingly. "It's alright. I promise that I'll take good care of you, okay? But first, I need to be sure of a few things. What's your name?"
He swallowed, then croaked, "Levi."
"Levi," you repeated with a smile, and he whined low in his throat.
You gazed affectionately back at him...until it clicked, and your eyes went wide. His name. His uncommonly short stature. The fact that he had godlike muscles hidden beneath his delicate frame. "Levi...as in, Captain Levi...of the Scouts?" you asked incredulously.
He nodded, still clinging to you tightly. "Is...that okay?" he murmured, his voice so quiet that you could barely hear it, genuinely fearful that you might be disappointed.
Your shock was overshadowed by the sudden urge to comfort him. "Of course! Of course, it is," you breathed. "I just...I wasn't expecting Humanity's Strongest Soldier to be my mate." Or an omega, for that matter. "I'm honored."
He sniffled, then quavered, "Can I...can I ask for your n-name?"
"You can always ask," you assured him, once again smiling softly. "My name is (f/n). I'm a lieutenant in the Scout Regiment – fifth squadron."
Levi gave a small nod of recognition. He knew of your squad, even if he had never met you personally.
"Now, Levi," you murmured in a tone that was still soft but also commanded his attention, "are you alright?"
He seemed to be caught off-guard by the question, as if he forgot that he had been attacked just a minute ago. "Y-yes....I'm with you," he replied, weakly but devotedly.
"Are you sure?" you asked. "Did that male do anything to hurt you?"
Levi shook his head. "No. He was g-going to, but..." His eyebrows tilted upward, giving you a look that was practically worshipful. "...y-you saved me. Thank you."
"It was no trouble at all, love," you replied, finding that the term of endearment flowed naturally from your lips. "I'm glad you're safe."
His breath hitched, and you could feel his body trembling. Stars, he was trying so hard to resist his heat. You hated seeing him in distress, but now that you were certain he was unharmed, you could finally address this particular need.
"Listen," you murmured, "there's a nice hotel just a couple blocks away. Do you think you can hold on until we get there?"
He tensed, but nodded dutifully. If it was to please their alphas, omegas were known to do difficult and taxing things that they wouldn't normally be able to accomplish. The instinct to obey was extremely powerful.
"Good boy," you breathed, and he whined again. You pulled his arms from around you, keeping a grip on his hand. But before you could start walking, you noticed a very obvious bulge in his trousers.
You slipped off your jacket and handed it to him. "Here, tie this around your hips," you instructed. Of course, anyone within thirty meters would be able to smell him and realize what was going on, but you figured you could spare him as much embarrassment as possible.
"Thank you," he said quietly, once again gazing at you like you were a goddess. He was probably honored that you had given him your clothing – your scent – to wrap himself in. You couldn't deny that the sign of possession, however small, pleased you as well.
You and Levi walked to the hotel as quickly as you could without attracting attention. While you spoke with the lobby attendant, he hid behind you, burying his face in your back and holding tightly to your waist. Thankfully, the receptionist was a beta, so no threat there. However, you were fully prepared to rip apart any alphas should their eyes dare to linger on your omega. The jacket was somewhat of a representation that he belonged to you, but your scent wouldn't be strong enough to act as a total deterrent for other alphas until you claimed him completely.
Once the key was in your hand, you quickly bundled Levi upstairs to your room.

You gazed at Levi's sleeping form, wondering how you got so lucky. Your fingers gently mapped the scars that covered his pale skin, telling the story of how he had fought and survived, of how brave and selfless he was. You felt the warm, comfortable weight of his exhausted body lying halfway atop yours, his head resting on your shoulder with a face that was completely serene.
Lovely, you thought as you admired his delicate features.
Your mind flashed back to last night, when you murmured that same word to him, in this bed, while he glistened with sweat and gasped for breath. While he rasped your name like a prayer and a plea, as if he were starving, and you were the only one who could feed him. While he came undone for you, over and over and over again.
You were still shocked that Humanity's Strongest Soldier was an omega. Even though you had never met him, you had heard stories. Your comrades had described Levi as cold, intimidating, strong – traits that were much more indicative of an alpha. Yet, here he was, so soft and warm in your arms, sleeping peacefully after a night of whimpering and begging and submitting to you.
Perhaps Levi was a little like you, in that respect – displaying the stereotypical traits of his class only in certain situations. Of course, you didn't mind one bit. You loved everything about him, all his layers and pieces. You loved how he was right now, gentle and affectionate and shy. And if he wanted to be fierce and strong outside of this space, then you would cheer him on in that respect, too. You would never want to diminish his identity by stuffing him into a mold.
Levi groaned softly, his face scrunching up before his eyelids fluttered open. Immediately, his gaze found you, and his sleepy expression softened into adoration, as if you were the most welcome sight he could ever wake up to. Clearly wanting to savor the moment, he let his eyes drift closed as he nuzzled into your neck, basking in your closeness.
You couldn't help but smile at his adorable behavior. Gently, you reached up to brush your fingers through his hair, having noticed how much he liked that. "Shh, Levi, stay down there," you murmured. "You don't have to come up just yet."
You weren't sure how often he got the chance to sleep in, but he clearly needed it, and as his alpha, you wanted to take the best possible care of him. You wanted him to stay in that hazy, satisfied state. To relax.
Levi seemed quite content to comply. Thus, you lay there for a long while, petting his hair, giving him a soothing and safe space to rest in. And you felt so blessed, just to be able to hold him like that.
Eventually, he opened his eyes again, and you took the opportunity to marvel at those stunning, grey-blue orbs. You could see how his piercing gaze might be intimidating to some, but for you, it was always soft.
Your grin broadened. "Good morning," you murmured.
"G'morning," Levi mumbled, still shaking off his drowsiness. A lazy smile curled his lips – smaller than your own, but no less delighted.
"Did you sleep well?"
"Yeah," he grumbled, rubbing his eyes, leaning up so that his weight was no longer on top of you – not that you minded. "I think...longer than I usually do, at least."
"I'm glad," you replied softly, tenderness filling your features.
Fully awake now, Levi returned your expression with one of gratitude. Then his eyes flicked away, seemingly out of embarrassment. "I...didn't get a chance to say this properly last night, but...thank you...for showing up when you did."
You felt a sudden pang in your chest, realizing that he probably thought you had initially followed his scent because your alpha instincts compelled you to. He didn't seem to mind – probably just accepting it as normal – but you wanted him to know that he was more than an outlet or a possession to you. You wanted him to know that you cared.
"Levi, I swear, I wasn't planning on forcing you, or anything like that," you stated softly, your eyes pleading with him to understand. "When I smelled the pheromones, I just wanted to make sure that whatever omega they were coming from was safe."
His eyes met yours with complete trust and devotion as he wrapped his arms around you, snuggling into your shoulder. "I know," he murmured. "I could tell."
You returned his embrace on instinct. And at his words, you smiled once again as warmth bloomed in your heart. For a moment, the two of you simply gazed at each other, cherishing each other. But then, you noticed Levi's stare becoming more contemplative, as if something was on his mind.
"What is it?" you asked.
A light pink shade dusted his cheeks. Shyness replaced thoughtfulness in his gaze as he averted his eyes, nuzzling his face into your chest as if he were trying to hide from you. "I'm just...glad," he murmured quietly. "I...I normally can't...trust people...like this. I'm not one to go home with strangers...or whatever. But the heat was so strong last night that I couldn't fight...I couldn't think..." He paused, and then you felt him sigh against your skin. "What I'm trying to say is...I'm glad that you're a decent person. I'm grateful that a decent person found me last night."
"I'm glad I found you, too," you murmured, petting his hair reassuringly. The warmth in your heart grew at how sweet he was. Expressing these things was obviously difficult for him, but he was trying anyway – for you.
A moment later, your brow furrowed as you remembered how strong his scent had been last night. "I've never seen an omega release so many pheromones before. Do you not take suppressors to stop them?" you asked gently.
"I..." he stammered. His gaze fell to the mattress as he pulled back from your chest, looking almost like he was...ashamed. "I do, but...they weren't working this time...for some reason..." he mumbled. "I didn't know what to do... It had never happened before..."
"Shh, it's alright. It's not your fault," you cooed, stroking your fingertips up and down his spine in a soothing motion. "You probably just got hit with a really intense cycle."
Levi swallowed, and his chin dipped further. When he spoke again, he sounded shaken, and almost inaudible. "I couldn't even fight back," he whispered, a hint of fear in his voice. "The heat was so overwhelming that...I didn't have any strength to. That male...could have done anything to me..."
"Shh," you repeated, pulling him back into the cocoon of your embrace. "It's over now, love. You won't ever have to feel that way again. I swear it."
And because it was you – his alpha – speaking the words, Levi knew they were true. He relaxed instantly, releasing a sigh before nuzzling his face into your collar. "Thank you," he murmured.
You hummed, and the two of you faded into silence. Again, you felt that wonderful contentment that came from simply holding him. He fit into you so perfectly, like you both were made for it.
"Also..." Levi mumbled, a blush creeping back onto his cheeks, "thank you...for b-bringing me here, i-instead of..." The words caught in his throat, and he swallowed. "I can't...I hate dirt...so thank you."
You realized what he was trying to say. He was grateful that you had taken him to a nice hotel instead of having him right there in the alley, despite how eager he had been, despite how he would have let you. He would have felt disgusting, once you took the edge off the heat enough for him to think rationally again. Because for some reason that he hadn't yet revealed, dirt made him uncomfortable.
You hoped he would share it with you one day – that he would share everything – because you wanted to know everything about him. But for now, knowing the reason wasn't necessary. If he had a need, the only necessary thing was for you to be aware, so that you could meet it.
"Of course, love," you murmured tenderly, pulling back to look into his eyes, letting him see that you were sincere. "You deserve a clean bed. And if anything ever makes you uncomfortable, don't hesitate to tell me, alright?"
He nodded, admiration and reverence shining in his gaze. "Thank you."
You gave him a gentle smile before leaning in and placing a soft kiss on his forehead. Then, instinctively mindful of what his needs might be, you mused, "I think it's time for breakfast, yeah?"
Levi tried to look indifferent, as if he felt embarrassed for admitting that he was hungry. Perhaps, as Humanity's Strongest Soldier, he was accustomed to concealing and denying his needs. "Yeah," he muttered.
However, you didn't want to make him go down there, amongst other people. Yes, you felt protective as his alpha, but more than that, it generally wasn't a great idea for omegas to be out in public while they were in heat. Now, Levi was still exhausted from last night, but who knew when his...urges...might flare up again? Besides, it would be bad if anyone recognized Humanity's Strongest Soldier as an omega, since he had so clearly tried to hide it.
"I'll go downstairs and get some food," you told him. "Will you be okay until I get back?"
He looked like he didn't want to let you go, but it was out of an omega's natural clinginess rather than out of fear. "I'll be fine," he assured you, also aware that he shouldn't be around other people right now.
"Good," you murmured as you lovingly brushed your fingers through his bangs. "Is there anything in particular that you want?"
"Tea," he responded instantly. "Black tea, with no sugar."
You chuckled. Given that his answer was so immediate, you could tell that black tea was something he enjoyed dearly. "I'll be sure to get some," you stated before climbing out of bed and quickly making yourself presentable.
On your way out, you glanced back over your shoulder and asked, "By the way, does anyone in the Corps know that you're an omega?"
"Erwin and Hanji," Levi replied quietly. "No one else."
"Do you trust them?"
He met your eyes unwaveringly. "Yes."
You nodded, then clicked the door shut behind you, making sure to lock it before heading downstairs.
While you were in the lobby, you mailed two small letters – one to your squad leader, and one to Commander Erwin. The contents of each were basically the same, except for one key difference, created out of a desire for privacy that you knew your mate shared. Your squad leader would only know that you yourself had found your mate, and that you would be gone for a few days while you got things settled. Commander Erwin would know that Levi was your mate, and that both of you would be gone until his heat cycle ended.

You stayed in that hotel with Levi for almost a week. Heat cycles typically lasted three or four days, but you guessed that his was longer this time because his body was encouraged by the newfound mating bond. Thankfully, you both were able to take birth control pills with a very high success rate. You instinctively wanted to have a child together, but at the same time, Levi couldn't afford to be out of commission for that long. Humanity needed its most powerful soldier.
Upon returning to Scout Regiment Headquarters, you and Levi went to see Commander Erwin. Even though you had written him a letter, Levi was certain that Erwin and Hanji would both be anxious after his sudden disappearance. Besides, you needed Erwin's approval for the two of you to move into a room together.
Hand-in-hand, you and Levi walked into Erwin's office, finding that Hanji was already there. When her eyes landed on your mate, she gasped, "Levi! Oh my gosh, we were so worried when we lost you at the bar! Are you okay?"
For a moment, it seemed like she might hug him, but she thought better of it when she took a second glance at you. It wasn't a great idea to go around touching a mated omega in front of their alpha. However, you wouldn't have done anything to her if she did – because Levi trusted her, and you trusted Levi – even though your instincts were itching to keep everyone away from him.
"I'm fine," Levi assured her, his blank expression betraying nothing. He had been impassive ever since you two left your hotel room this morning – once again donning the mask of Humanity's Strongest Soldier. "I just found my mate. I'm pretty sure she explained everything in her letter."
"Yes, we got that," Erwin stated from where he sat at his desk. His hands folded on the polished surface as he observed you thoughtfully. "Lieutenant (f/n), I hope you'll forgive me for this, but as Levi's friends, we need to make sure he's alright. We need assurance that you'll take good care of him."
You bristled a little at the challenge, but a part of you was also glad that Levi had loyal friends to look out for him.
Before you could answer, Levi murmured, "Erwin, it's okay. She's good. She..." He paused, seemingly unable to put everything he wanted to say into words. Instead, he swallowed, snuggling into your side a bit as he finished quietly, "She's good."
Erwin studied his sincere gaze, which was softer than it had been on the way here, conveying the truth of his words. At last, the commander sighed. "Well, I'm glad to hear that. Of course, I had hoped that – being one of our own – you would be a decent partner for him, (f/n).
"But that brings us to another issue," Erwin stated, facing the captain once again. "Levi, now that you're mated to someone who is known to be an alpha, you won't be able to hide the fact that you're an omega. I'll leave it up to you as to how you deal with that, but know that Hanji and I are here to support you if you should need anything, as always."
Levi nodded, then spoke softly, "I know."
"Eeeeee! This is so exciting!" Hanji squealed, lightening the mood considerably. "Can you believe it, Erwin? Our little Shorty finally found his mate!"

You stopped in the entryway of your cozy cottage, slipping off your shoes and jacket before continuing into the house proper. It had only been about half a year since you purchased the place, since humanity was freed. Yet, it already felt like a lifelong home to you, and you had Levi's domestic skills to thank for that.
The house bore signs of a recent cleaning, but your omega was nowhere to be seen. That was normal, these days, so you weren't worried. You knew exactly where to find him.
"(F/n)!" Levi chimed as you stepped into your bedroom. Omegas commonly exhibited nesting behavior while pregnant, so he spent a lot of time curled up in your shared bed – burying himself in your clothes and cuddling with an army of stuffed animals whenever you weren't around.
As soon as he saw you, he hopped off the bed and ran to give you a kiss – soft and sweet. He always missed you terribly while you were at work, and you felt bad for leaving him. However, the two of you would need money to provide for your baby.
"Hi, love," you murmured. Then you knelt down so you were level with his swollen stomach. "And hello to you, little one," you cooed before placing a kiss on the bump.
Levi's breath hitched, and when you glanced up at his face, you saw that familiar expression of reverent adoration. He loved the idea of having a baby with you – it was his nature. Thus, the sight of you greeting your unborn child had his cheeks heating and his heart skipping.
You chuckled a bit as you stood up and gave him another kiss – deep and thorough – before sliding your arm around his waist. "Come on," you encouraged, gently guiding him back to his nest. "Let's cuddle."
