A/N : God, it has been a while since I've updated. I can't believe that this fandom is still alive after all those years. Well, I hope to publish all the stories that are left over. Don't know what happened to my writing style but this is quite different from my old one. Have fun reading ;)

Y/N P.O.V.

We found a way out of the maze, had to watch our friends die and lost everything we had built.

For nothing.

After we set one foot in freedom, we were again pulled into a helicopter against our will and have been flying over destroyed cities and deserts for almost two hours now.
I haven't spoken since we took off, just kept staring through the window into the distance.
My legs are numb from all the running and I see some bruises on my arms.
The others are not better off either but our aching hearts are much worse.
The pictures of Chuck bleeding to death in Thomas' arms flash through my brain.
A tear escapes my right eye when I think of Gally, my brother and my only hope for a happy life as a family, who was pierced with a spear.
Actually, I shouldn't blame Minho for saving us from more shots, but he killed him.

Another salty tear runs down my cheek and makes my face, that is covered with scratches, burn.
I close my eyes and finally fall asleep after a few minutes.

"Y/N."

Newts' voice reaches my ear and I open my eyes.
The helicopter has landed and I hear shouts from outside.
It's dark, and I see some armed men through the dusty glass.
My best friend, the former second-in-command, pulls me outside in a hurry and together we run after the others and towards a large building.

A few shots ring out as the door closes behind us and a strange man with grey hair greets us.

I don't really listen to his speech and start spacing out.
My thoughts wander to the boys who have been left behind in the glade.
Are they still alive and will they also be saved by the soldiers, dressed in black?

"Hey you! The girl with the y/h/c hair!"

I look up and stare at the man who called me. His look is somehow contemptuous and I get the feeling that something is wrong here.

"Her name is Y/N, shuckface." Thomas growls and looks hostilely at the guy.
Said man raises his eyebrows in amusement and waves his guards over.

"Take the boys to the rooms in hall one. I'll take care of the two girls." he orders and curves the sides of his mouth to what is probably meant to be a smile.
He reminds me of a rat that is trapped inside of a human being, which is why I secretly name this guy Ratman.
Teresa walks beside him without any protest but I don't move an inch.

"Why can't we stay together as a group?", I ask.

He turns his head and gives me a side glance.

"You'll be able to see each other at dinner later. Just follow me for now.", he answers.

I huff in response before frowning at him.

"That wasn't my question. Also, I'm sure it won't be a problem for anybody if I just stick with the boys. We lived together for a long time, no need to separate us now."

Ratman looks like he's about to kill me but instead of responding to my comment, he just grabs me by my arm and tries to drag me away from the group.

"Hey man, why don't you just leave Y/N and Teresa alone?
I think I'm speaking for our whole group when I'm saying that we don't want any trouble.", Newt steps in.

"I won't discuss this with you kids. You should be grateful that we helped you out after you escaped the maze. Otherwise you'd be dead by now."

"We didn't ask for your help tho.", Frypan pipes in, who earns a glare from the man in return.

"Can't we just accept the rules of this place as long as we stay here? Y/N you won't be alone once we're separated from the boys. I will be there too, so don't make a fuss about it. Let's go.", Teresa says and follows Ratman.

I feel a hand softly nudging me to go forwards.
Looking behind me, I see Newt smiling at me reassuringly. As if to tell me that everything will be alright.
Sighing, I crack a little smile and walk towards Ratman, who welcomes me with his stupid fake friendliness and leads us to a separated area.

Next thing I know, we girls are standing in a dull bathroom. The door closes behind us and I can hear a guard locking it from outside.
Slightly panicking, I try to press down the door handle, to no avail.

"Fuck, that little shit." I whisper under my breath.

Teresa grabs some towels and goes to one of the sectioned showers.
Hesitating, I follow her lead and step in the other shower next to her.

After about 15 minutes of silently enjoying the hot and clean water, I throw my old dirty clothes into one of the trash cans next to the sinks and put on the shirt and trousers that the guards gave us.

"You know, we should be glad for their help. I don't see what makes you so suspicious.", Teresa breaks the silence.

I laugh ironically.

"Yeah sure. Have you ever thought about the perfectly timed coincidences? Most of us were trapped inside that a gigantic maze for almost 3 years and suddenly some guards appear out of nowhere, fully armed, saving us right after we escaped. Why didn't they come get us sooner?"

Teresa opens her mouth to respond but I keep ranting.

"I mean, they had big guns and as you could see, they have many soldiers stationed in this deserted area.
Do you remember, when we told them about the others that were still in the maze? So many lives they could've saved. Weird, because they didn't seem to care, did they?! We were the only ones whose safety mattered to them."

I stop for a second to take a deep breath and then continue:
"And we should NOT be glad for their help because we don't need those people.
Many of our friends were murdered by Wicked, for us to come this far. I'm sure after almost dying and killing all those grievers, we would be able to fight our way through a deserted wasteland."

Teresa furrows her eyebrows and shakes her head in disapproval. She doesn't understand my intentions to keep our little family, that is all we have left, save. How could she? Teresa didn't actually bond with anybody except Thomas when she came up in the box. And both of them only grew close because they could remember their lives before the maze. They don't know how it felt to be trapped inside 4 huge walls, made of stone, for so many years. It drives you insane. Some guys lost their minds and committed suicide or died by finding a way out.

I walk to one of the sinks and begin to treat some of my wounds while Teresa stays a few meters away from me. I can feel her eyes burning holes in the back of my head.

"You are so simple minded to think that there is nothing worse than your life being controlled by Wicked! So many people died out here while you were in the safest environment possible since your childhood."
My head snaps around and I glare at the brown haired girl.

"I didn't ask for it. I didn't ask Wicked to keep me away from my family. I didn't ask them to brainwash us and let us suffer. We could've lived a normal life and grow up like kids should. Look at us now. We are still children and have to fear death every day. This is not what we want - what I want.", I respond and turn around again.

"But how would you know? You spent two days in the glade and were asleep half of the time. What makes you think that you are in the position to tell me that I should be happy about how things went?!", I hiss.

Teresa rolls her eyes and smiles slightly.
"It's useless to discuss this topic with you. The strong, independent Y/N can't be persuaded, right?!", she asks mockingly.

"Shut up."

"Oh come on, you never liked me in the first place since I was brought into the glade. This is the first time that we're having a real conversation. Or am I wrong?"

Ah, I see what she is doing here.
Cute that she thinks, she could provoke me.
Teresa tried that once before, back in the glade. Pretty sure, we won't be friends in this life and probably not in the next one either.

"Nah you're right, I didn't like you. Neither do I now. You were the reason everything broke apart. As soon as you showed up, the gates wouldn't close anymore and the grievers destroyed our home. Hell, they killed our friends and even our leader. And in the end even my brother. Gally was right about you.", I respond smirkingly.

"You are causing trouble and should've been sacrificed to the grievers. I knew that my brother's plan was meant to fail, back then, but it might've been the only opportunity to get rid of you."

She looks at me in horror and I grin.
The girl surely hasn't seen that side of me before.

"What? Did I make the great Teresa speechless?", I look at her played surprised.

"It makes me kind of curious when I hear you talking about Wicked. You seem to defend everything they did to us. Say, do you know more than we do? Perhaps, anything specifically from working for this organization when you watched us suffer in the maze?", I ask and smile sweetly.

She stares at me bewildered and her blue eyes widen.

"Oh so I'm right, aren't I ?"

Teresa presses her lips together and stays silent.
Laughing bitterly, I walk closer to her until we're just a few centimeters apart.
Her eyes, that remind me of crystal clear water, flicker nervously.

I raise one eyebrow in amusement.
Seeing her switch from the mocking attitude to being scared is funny to watch.
It took me some time to learn how to detect my opponent's real intentions and using them to my advantage.
But it's quite entertaining, now that I know how to.

Still smiling at her, I brush a strand of hair from her face.

"You should be careful. Traitors always pay for their actions."

With those words, I knock on the door and leave the bathroom after the guards unlocked it. But not without 'accidentally' bumping my shoulder against hers on my way.
