     "Wait... where's Sarah?" Sophie asked.

"Over there," Gethen said, pointing over to the Sarah-Alex-Henry lump.

"You HAD to sedate them?"

"You want me to sedate you?"

"Tough choice, I'll take a pass."

Sophie sighed. "What do you want?"

"Oh, it's simple, really."

"Well, I don't have all day."

"I want to kill you."

Then Sophie started laughing.

Like, hysterical laughter.

"Are you kidding me?" She said between giggles, "That's what you want? You've tried to kill me countless times and then you just come and tell me? You HAD to state the obvious. You obviously did put signs of the Neverseen on my doorstep. I'm a mind reader, you know."

"Enough with the chitchat. Ruy," he said, motioning Ruy to do something.

Ruy lifted his hands and made a dome that trapped Sophie.

Sophie didn't look scared, but she actually most certainly was.

She crossed her arms. "That's it?"

Umber, the Shade, lifted her arms and had shadows come out of it.

Sophie dodged it, and inflicted on Umber. She toppled backwards in surprise.

Before Gethen or Ruy made sense what was going on, Sophie did the same to them.

They groaned in pain, but glittered away. "We'll be back!"

"I'll be waiting, then."

Then, Sophie's knees gave in.

All she saw was black.
————————————————
Sophie opened her eyes.

There was a chandelier.

Her apartment didn't have a chandelier.

She didn't know anyone who had a chandelier.

She looked around.

The door opened. It was Samuel.

"WHERE IN THE WORLD AM I?"

"Not your house."

"That was helpful."

"Thanks."

"NOW TELL ME WHERE I AM OR ELSE I WILL THROW YHIS PILLOW AT YO-"

"Gee, no need to yell-"

"WHERE ARE WE?"

He crossed his arms. "Fine. We're at my house."

"Nice chandelier."

"Thanks."

"How did I get here again?"

"Oh, so we finished eating dinner at a restaurant and then we decided to walk around and found you unconscious on the sidewalk."

"That'll be a great story to tell when you grow up: 'Hey, so there was this one time that I finished dinner and saw a girl unconscious on the sidewalk.'"

"It's creepy if you put it that way!"

"But, anyway, how'd you end up unconscious?"

Sophie had to come up with an excuse because she really couldn't tell a human that she had freaky elf powers and some other elves with other freaky elf powers attacked her so she had to use her freaky elf powers and it drained a lot of her energy.

'Freaky elf' is a very commonly used phrase these days.

"Well, one of my bosses told me to follow her after work. Then I bumped into the wall." Sophie clamped a hand over her mouth, realizing she'd told him that she worked.

He didn't pay attention. "Your boss didn't help you?"

"Well, they probably bumped into the walls too."

"How do you know?"

"Because it was dark in there. They probably left before me because they didn't see me. Also, you sound like a crime investigator. You're asking ridiculous questions."

He sighed. "Fine, I might sound silly."

"Ridiculous."

"Fine."

"How long have I been here?"

"Who's the one asking questions now?"

"At least they're not ridiculous. Now you're answering my questions with questions and now we're stuck with a bunch of questions."

"Huh? Whatever. You've been here for about half a day."

"What time is it?"

"Still a lot of questions. Anyway, it's around 4 p.m."

"It's Saturday, right?"

"Is it?"

"It is? UGH NOW YOU'RE CONFUSING ME."

"Hahahahahahah, yes, it is Saturday." He sank lower into the chair.

She didn't have to go to work until after an hour, but she didn't know what to do in the meantime.

She could go home and shower and change .

Or she could ditch.

But then she wouldn't have enough pay for her apartment.

Decisions, decisions.

She'll probably just go home and shower.

"Well, uh, thanks for letting me stay here! I'll be on my way..."

"Where?"

"None of your business."

"Please?"

"Somewhere."

He made an annoyed face.

"I'm going somewhere! There, happy! I told you where I was going!"

"Pu-lease?"

"Fine. I'm going to work, and, no, I'm not ditching."

"You're no fun. Hey, where do you work?"

"At a restaurant."

"What restaurant?"

"Not telling you."

"Tell me and I'll let you leave."

Sophie raised an eyebrow. "Promise?"

"Promise."

"I'm going to Shaky Shakes and Burgers. Ridiculous name? Yes. Did I name it? No. Now thanks for letting me leave."

"Uh... okay. Bye, see you on Monday! Or maybe I'll find you again passed out on another sidewalk. Who knows?"

"Yea... right, okay, bye."

Sophie quickly walked out of the beautiful glimmering house.

She got back to her apartment in about an hour. After she'd showered, she made her way to the restaurant.

"Hi," Sophie greeted Sarah.

"Hi," Sarah replied, looking back to her phone.

After a very exhausting dinner hour, Sophie finally finished everything and could go home.

"See you tomorrow!" Sophie said to Sarah.

"What? No! We're off on Sundays."

"Oh, ok! See you Monday!"

"Not yet," Sarah whispered, "the boss is coming to give pay."

A tall, regal lady walked in. She had blonde hair and was wearing heels.

"You must be the new worker." She said, her voice laced with an accent.

"Yes ma'am."

"Well, I've gotten bad reports of customer service."

"...but- I did exactly what Sarah told me to do!"

She ignored Sophie.

"You must have this improved or else you will get fired."

"Yes, ma'am. Sorry, ma'am. I'll improve, ma'am."

"That's a lot of ma'ams. Anyway, here are your paychecks and see you on Monday."

"Goodbye!"

Sophie and Sarah waved goodbye to each other and left.

There was one thing Sophie just realized.

It was that Sophie's paycheck was only a fifth of what she needed for a month.

And there were only four weeks in a month.

And that meant she needed another job- quick.

She needed another job or else she'll lose her home.

Along with everything she owned.

It was time to change.
