It was a warm Saturday morning and you had around twenty minutes until you arrived at your grandmothers house where you would be spending the whole summer. You decided to come back to your home town as an escape from all the shit that had gone on during the school year. You deserved a long break and you had felt bad that you hadn't visited your grandmother since you moved away with your dad after middle school.

You arrived at her decent sized ranch as she came out to greet you.

"Y/n! Look how big you've gotten!"

"Well I was in eighth grade the last time you saw me in person. How are you?"

"I'm doing alright. So how's college. Got a boyfriend?"

"College is fine. No more boyfriends. I'm taking a break with them for now."

"Well, there's some lovely boys down here."

"I'm sure there are."

You lugged your suitcases to the guest room and set them down. You unpacked most of your things when you heard an unfamiliar voice in the house. You walked out of your room and into the kitchen where you found your grandmother fussing over a boy. He turned around to face you, a confused look on his face at first that turned into pure excitement a moment later.

"Y/n?"

"Connie? That you?"

"Yea its me. Is that you?"

"What do you think?"

"You look so different!" he said walking over to give you a hug.

"So do you! You got so tall...and you look stronger?"

"Yea I started working out freshman year." he said as he flexed and kissed his bicep. "Puberty hit me like a rock after you left. Should've seen how hot I got." he said with a smirk.

"Yea your personality is defiantly not different."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means you're still an idiot." you laughed as you poked his nose.

"Am not." he said staring to take the food out fo the bags.

"What are you doing here?"

"Oh, I pick up your grandmothers groceries for her, she doesn't like to drive too far and the nearest grocery store is a stretch."

You grandmother turned around and patted Connie's back, "He's such sweetheart. I needed some help after you moved with your father so Connie volunteered."

"Ah, It's nothing...besides it's not much."

"Wait, so how many years have you been doing this."

"About six. I was just-"

"And you didn't tell me you were helping out all this time?"

"Well you kinda fell off the face of the Earth, we lost touch."

"Yea we did. That's my fault"

"Everyone else still talks about you. Good things though!" he said as he walked outside with you.

"I missed you guys a lot, I didn't really have a lot of friends in the city."

"Really? But it's full of people."

"Yea, I didn't really fit in though."

"Well I'm glad your back...how long are you going to be staying?"

"Just till the end of the summer."

"That's it? You can't stay any longer."

"Nope, I have to go back to school."

"Well you should make the most of your time then. The yearly fair is this weekend you should come."

"I don't know I rather stay in."

"You still don't like going out? Thought you would've grew out of that."

"Hey! At least I'm not stupid."

"I'm very smart actually."

"Mhm."

"So your really not going to come?"

"No, I rather spend time with my grandmother. She hasn't seen me in so long."

"Yea I guess, I'll see you tomorrow! I'm coming to cut the grass."

"I'll see you Connie."

You let out an audible sigh and scratched the back of your head.

"He's a keeper isn't he?"

"What?" you said turning to look at your grandmother.

"He's too good for the eyes."

"What do you mean."

"I mean he's hot." she said nudging you.

"Hey! That's a bit much for you, don't you think?"

"I think you should go for it."

"Go for it? Wha...I'm not into Connie!"

"Mhmm. I can see it. Your babies would be cute."

"BABIES?"

"Yes I want grandchildren. Connie's a nice boy and the two of you are friends."

"I'll pass."

"Really?"

"I'm serious, besides, I just got out of a relationship I don't need a whole new one."

"I'm sure you'll change your mind. It's going to be a long three months."

"Let's go inside, I'll help you with dinner." you said as you laughed.

You cooked and ate in your grandmother's presence. Yes, it was pretty boring, but you couldn't help but feel slightly at ease. She was so simple and soothing. This whole town was simple and soothing, you had forgotten how bored you got here as a kid.

Once your grandmother had fell asleep you mad your way to your room and opened your laptop. You did some online shopping and watched a few episodes of a tv series when you were interrupted by a slight thudding noise.

"What is that?"

Another small thud came, and you looked over to your window. A small pebble was tossed up bouncing off creating the noises. You made your way over tho the window to investigative when another pebble nearly hit you in the face.

"What the hell?"

"Y/n! Down here."

"Connie?"

"I came to take you to the fair anyway. I know you're bored."

"You came all the way here?"

"Mhmm."

"I don't know...if I leave at this hour, and she wakes up and I'm gone-"

"Trust me she's not waking up, come on!"

"I can't go through the front, she'll hear."

"Then jump."

"No."

"Just do it. Or are you scared?"

"You know what, I am scared."

"Loser. Just jump. It's a ranch, you're acting like it's two floors."

"This window is high though."

"Just do it!"

"If I get hurt it's your fault."

You swung your legs over the edge and looked down at the ground.

"Connie-"

"We could be gone by now."

You placed your hands at the side gripping the window-seal and pushed yourself forward, both your feet landing safely on the ground.

"See it wasn't even that high."

"It looked higher."

He took your hand and dragged you to his car.

You got in and washed as he hopped in on the drivers side. He pulled out of the driveway and headed down the dirt path into the main part of town.

"So how's the city?" he asked glancing at you.

"Fast, it was hard for me to keep up with everyone when I moved. Didn't make many friends either."

"So why didn't you stay in touch with us?"

"I don't know...it was hard, I mean we texted and stuff at first, but as we got older..."

"Kinda just faded away."

"Yea."

"Do you think...you could visit more? I really missed you."

"I missed you too, I don't know I have to see-"

You glanced down at your phone to see messages from a number you could've sworn you blocked.

"Boyfriend?"

"Ex."

"Oh, I'm sorry."

"Don't be. Best thing that's ever happened to me."

"Oh, then I'm glad then. He an ass?"

"An asshole with a victim complex."

 "Gross, he still chasing after you?"

"I guess? I dunno I'm not opening his dumb messages, he's obsessed."

"If you ever need help-"

"It's fine, you help my family enough." you said with a smile

He pulled into a field and parked his car. There were mostly people your age there now that it was so late.

"I remember the first time we came here together." he said as you walked past the gaming booths.

"Yea, and you threw up all over Jean."

"We said we wouldn't talk about it."

"And you pissed yourself on the-"

"Shut up." he said nudging you int the side.

"So what do you wanna do?"

"Let's start with the games." he said. "Work our way up."

"What about the water gun game?"

"That one?"

"Yea."

"You know y/n, I'm gonna beat you."

"Your not."

"I am. I'm a strong man. And look how much bigger I am compared to you now."

" I forgot I was taller than you all our life." you said picking up the gun.

"Haha, you'll see who's better in a second."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He lost.
"I won a goldfish! I know you're mad." you said sticking tongue out at him.
"That thing is going to die in two days."
"Your just mad you lost mister 'I'm strong and a man'."
"I forgot how much I hate you."
"Mhm. Let's stick to the games, since I know you can't handle the rides."
"Shut up."
"Wanna do an easier game? One I won't kick your ass at."
"I should've left you home."
"I'm just teasing, pick."
"Claw Machine?"
"Those are rigged."
"If you suck just say that."
"Whatever you play."
"Watch the master at work."
He actually won on his first try. I would be lying if I said I wasn't impressed.
"Here." he said as he headed me the frog stuffed animal. "It looks like you."
"I hate you."
"Let's go get food I'm starving." he said taking your hand. "Whadda want?"
"Funnel Cakeeee. It smells so good."
"I forgot you have a weird love for that. It's just dough thrown in grease with powdered sugar on top. Gross"
"Be quiet and just get me some, you're the one who dragged me out here."
I sat down at a table and watched as Connie came back with way too much food.
"Why'd you get all this?"
"Sorry, it's a habit I'm used to buying a lot because of Sasha."
"She still eats like that?"
"It's gotten worse."
"Oh."
"Ya know it's gonna be fun having you around again, even if it's for a little bit."
"Yea, I think so too."
You couldn't help but internally blush at his statement. You and Connie were always close friends but nothing more than that. But something about both of you had changed, and so would your relationship. You didn't know it right now. But this was the brand new start, to a love that would last forever.
