Flickers off
The half-painted walls
A half-paint job
Her part-time job
She's pushed away the howling wind
With cheers and
A lucky spin
On the big wheel of fortune.
Colours
And numbers
Fill her vision
The TV screen is bright
Brighter than the city stars
Lighter than her heart
That soars and leaps
With the crowd's applause as a winner is pronounced
She sighs
When cash is lost
To lament another's luck.
The moon rises, the clock ticks on
Her eyes droop with the weight of the sun
It peeks over the dawn
Scaring the shadows away
Though they stay under her eyes
As fingers relax on the bowl of chips
Sunrise cheddar chips.
The sun wonders if she's done.
