The Cabin

The cabin was smaller than they had thought, it was good enough. Rex put his hands to either side of his face and pressed against a window, looking through where the curtains were parted. He looked around as much as he could and turned to Ahsoka, "There looks to be a tiny furnace, a bunk, and that's all I could see. But it doesn't look like anyone's here,"

"It'll do. It's getting night again, so I'm glad we found this," Ahsoka said.

Rex nodded and walked up to the door. He took a step back and pivoted on the ball of his foot, about to kick the door down when Ahsoka stopped him, "Rex! Someone owns this place. You can't just break down the door," she said with her arms crossed.

"You got a better idea?"

"Yes. The windows might be unlocked,"

"I tried. They're locked,"

She thought for a moment, "...Stay here. Don't break the door down,"

Ahsoka walked around the cabin and Rex tapped his foot impatiently. He wondered what she was doing. Maybe he should just kick it down. No, she said not to. His ears and nose were getting cold, so he grabbed his helmet, about to put it on when Ahsoka came back.

She looked at him with a  smile and she was holding up a key.

"Wha- where'd you get that?"

"There was an outhouse and this was inside it,"

How she knew where to look, Rex would never know. Ahsoka stuck it in the lock and unlocked the door. She carefully opened it up and peered inside. She walked all the way in and looked around. Like Rex had said, there was a bunk and a furnace. There was also a small stove with cabinets and a little table with two chairs. Rex smirked when he saw cabinets. He walked past Ahsoka and opened them up.

Ahsoka closed the door and took off her coat. She hung it on the hook that was on the door and then went over to the bunk bed, "I call top," she said over her shoulder. She heard a crunching sound so she turned around and saw Rex holding a tin in one hand, and with the other he was stuffing his face with cookies.

He looked at her, "What?" He said with a mouthful. His grin was contagious and she walked over to take one. "Nuh-uh," he turned his back towards her and swallowed, "Mine," he reached into the tin again and Ahsoka used the Force to pull the cookie out of his hand. Rex turned around, "Hey!"

She gave him a playful smirk and shoved the entire cookie in her mouth. It was better than she thought. It was very sweet, but not too sweet. She quickly swallowed it and snatched the tin out of Rex's hand, "You need substantial food, not sweets." She set it on the table and grabbed the latern that was on it.

Rex raised an eyebrow, "Who uses gas powered lanterns nowadays?"

"Whoever lives here, I guess," she looked around, "Ah," she walked over to a counter and grabbed a small fuel can. "This'll make the lantern work,"

"Uhh. Shouldn't you use the light outside?"

"Yes. I heard a creek nearby and figured I could use the buckets by the door and collect water. Didn't wanna do it in the dark,"

"How far away is the crick? I don't want you getting lost,"

"Okay, first of all, it's 'creek' not 'crick.' Second, I won't get lost. Now get the furnace powered up, it's cold in here,"

Rex nodded and grabbed an arm full of wood that was near it while she powered up the lantern. She walked over to the door and pulled her coat back on, "I'll be back," she grabbed two buckets and walked out the door.

Outside, it was colder than it was the night before, so Ahsoka was grateful for the cabin. It wasn't very big, but it was definitely better than being stuck in a tight sleeping bag getting elbowed or knee'd every two seconds. She made it to the creek and set the lantern on the ground. She filled up the pails and then realized she'd have to carry all three things. She sighed and carried a bucket and the lantern in one hand while having the other carry the other bucket. She hobbled through the snow and was at the back corner of the cabin.

Ahsoka gasped. There was a sudden noise that sounded like a small explosion. Rex. She immediately reacted and set down the buckets and lantern, sprinting for the door. She slipped on a patch of ice, nearly falling over. She righted herself quickly and thoughts played out in her head. It almost sounded like a blaster. No, wait, blasters don't sound like that. She made it to the door and busted into the cabin.

Rex was picking himself up off the floor. Smoke had filled the room and she noticed the front door of the furnace was missing. The can of white gas was on the floor and the furnace door was over by the bunks, "Woah," he said quietly. He smelled like a burnt piece of meat. Ahsoka noticed half of his right eyebrow was singed off and his armor had black over it, "I-I tried to light the fire...."

"With what?"

"Well it was getting really cold," he said defensively. "I thought I'd light the fire quicker," he looked at his armor and groaned, trying to wipe the black off it.

"You didn't use this, did you?" She strode over and grabbed the fuel off the floor. She held it out to him. "Rex, this is white fuel. It is extremely volatile, are you crazy?!"

He scoffed, "How was I supposed to know?"

"You're smart, you coulda figured it out," she said with hand motions.

"Well I'm sorry my brain hasn't been functioning correctly,"

She sighed and looked down. She couldn't help but let out a small snicker. That snicker turned into a chuckle, then into a full blown laugh. Ahsoka pointed at his face, "Your eyebrow," she put a hand to her stomach and laughed harder.

Her laughing made Rex smile and he started to chuckle. He smoothed a finger over both eyebrows and his heart skipped a beat when he realized what she was laughing about. "Oh no," he walked over to the window and looked at his faint reflection. "Oh no." He turned around and Ahsoka bent over with laughter. What was wrong with her? "Ahsoka?! This isn't funny," he couldn't help but smile.

She snorted, "It is really funny,"

Rex sighed. This was another situation he'd never here the end of. Ahsoka finally calmed down enough as steadied her breathing, "Whew, I don't know what happened with me,"

"When you're tired you become very giddy. Are you tired?"

"...yeah,"

He walked over to her and took off the coat for her. He closed the door and hung it up on the hook, "Hey, where's the water?"

"Oh. It's at the back of the cabin, I'll—,"

"No, I'll get it. Get some rest. I'll wake you when I get food prepared. Or at least try to prepare some,"

"Okay, thanks," she headed over to the bunk and climbed to the top. Rex walked out and Ahsoka settled underneath the incredibly thin blanket. The mattress was thin too, she figured if it was a trapper cabin or something of that sort the person wouldn't have the most luxurious items.

A loud clatter from outside caused her to jump. What was that? Was it Rex? The door opened and she figured he maybe dropped something, being the clumsy person he was. She heard him set down the buckets on the floor and what she guessed to be the lantern on the table. She also heard him sit down with a small groan.

Rex took off his left boot and the plate on his calf. He took off the sock and rolled up the leg part of his blacks. He rested that leg on his right knee and rubbed his sore ankle, grimacing. He made sure he wasn't in incredible pain, then he slowly stood up. He bit his lip as he grabbed a pail of water and limped over to the stove. He fished around in a cabinet and found an old tea pot (tbh idk if SW has tea pots or stoves, oh well, I'm including them). He set it on the stove and poured some water into the pot. He lit the stove and waited for it to heat up.

After he made a makeshift icepack with snow, cold water, and a bag for his ankle, he took the pot off the stove and poured the hot water into two mugs he found, then put in the tea bags that were close to expiring. He looked around the cabinets some more, but only a few scraps of food. Which was understandable since the owner probably didn't want any food to rot or animals to break in and steal the food.

Rex hobbled over to the backpack they had and took out the ration bars and a small tube of bacta. He grabbed the mugs and set them on the table along with the bars. He then propped his leg on his knee again and applied a thin layer of bacta to his ankle.

"What happened?" Came Ahsoka's voice.

Rex startled, "Oh. I, uh, slipped on a patch of ice. Sprained my ankle I think. But it's minor, don't worry,"

Ahsoka climbed down and walked over and sat on the chair, "So that's what that sound was. You sure it's minor? Do I need to heal you?"

"Uh, no. I don't want it to drain you after the last few days we had. I can handle a little pain,"

"Okay, If you say so." She picked up the mug and blew on the steam. She brought it to her lips and took a sip. She could feel the hot tea go all the way down, it was a wonderful feeling. She hadn't realized she had chugged the whole thing down and she set it back on the table. Rex looked at her, suppressing a smirk.

After Ahsoka and him got their fill of liquids, cookies, and a ration bar, they decided to head to bed and try and get a good night's rest. Ahsoka had decided to skip sleeping on the top, and to rest on the bottom with Rex. She remembered she should've looked for a way to contact Anakin, but she chose to save that for future Ahsoka and Rex. Right now, they needed sleep after walking the whole day with little breaks, plus the small attack from the Narglatch shapeshifter thing, and also the fact that Rex had a minor sprained ankle. Ahsoka wondered if it could get worse. She figured it could always get worse.
