The expense of the Los Angeles International Airport buzzed with the energy of motion. Marc Denel stood near the check in counter, his small frame being dwarfed by the towering travelers bustling around to their respected destinations. He had a particular mix of excitement and fear as he readjusted the strap of his leather messenger bag. This was it, he thought, the moment he's worked towards since Highschool. A new position awaited him in San Francisco, a city he only visited in fleeting moments, but now it felt like a significant chapter of his life was about to start.
Yet, as he looked around his gaze fell upon a familiar figure standing beside him. Tiffany Chambers. His best friend since childhood. She was petite, with a cascade of blonde hair that danced in the gentle breeze of the airports air conditioning. Her lighthearted demeanor contrasting with the bittersweet expression on Marc's face. Tiffany has always been his cheerleader, illuminating even his darkest days with her laughter and warmth.
"Can you believe it!" Tiffany asked, her eyes sparkling with a mix of pride and sadness. "You're really moving to San Francisco! It's like a dream come true."
Marc chuckled softly, trying to mask the knot of emotions tightening in his chest. "Yeah, I guess it is. I mean its a big deal right? New job, new city.... new everything."
Tiffany leaned against the check-in counter, her arms crossed over her chest as she tilted her head to the side. "You're going to do amazing, Marc. You've always had an eye for design. I can already picture you transforming those San Francisco apartments."
"Thanks, Tiff", he replied. His voice tinged with gratitude. "But I cant help but feel scared you know? What if I don't fit in? What if I cant handle the pressure of having a team? Being the boss?"
Tiffany stepped closer, her expression softening. " You've always handled leading well. Remember that time in high school when we had that group art project? We needed a leader to structure the group and you stepped up without hesitation! You shone like a star."
Marc smiled at the memory. He was so terrified, but he had found strength in Tiffany's presence. Her unwavering belief in him. It was moments like those that really strengthened their friendship.
"Yeah, but this is different", he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "This is my career."
"This is everything I am, and you won't be there", he thought to himself.
"And you're go to thrive, I know it". Tiffany said, her tone firm yet gentle. "but I am gong to miss you like crazy. Who am I going to binge-watch those terrible love reality shows with"?
Marc chuckled at her playful pout. "You act like I won't have a TV or internet, We'll have to just facetime each other".
Tiffany rolled her eyes dramatically, though she still smiled and said " it won't be the same though".
As they continued to banter back and forth, Marc's heart felt heavier as the time passed, moving closer to the inevitable departure. This wasn't just a goodbye to a job; it felt like it was goodbye to his friends, his home, his life. The only life he'd known, the life that shaped him. The tight bond he shared with Tiffany was something he knew he would never take for granted. They had been thought thick and thin together, and now as he prepared to leave, he couldn't shake the feeling that the life he knows was about to change.
"Hey, I got you something", Tiffany said suddenly like she had just remembered. Reaching into her backpack, she pulls out a tan leather-bound notebook, its cover embossed with a delicate golden lined boarder. "I thought you could use this to jot down your ideas or draw out your designs. You know for inspiration".
Marc took the notebook, feeling its soft leather beneath his fingertips. "Tiff this is beautiful, thank you". He flipped through the pages, imagining the sketches and notes that will soon fill the pages. Half way through the book the pages turn from lined pages to grided pages, which will be very useful. "I'll definitely have to send you photos of my ideas to get your opinion".
"Deal" Tiff said smile widening. "Just don't forget about me when your all big and famous out there working for the Chris Miller".
"Never" Marc assured her with uncertainty. They stood in a comfortable silence for a few more minutes, watching as other passengers checked in and hugged loved ones. The departure board flickers overhead showing the new flights. In that moment, Marc felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude wash over him. Yes he was leaving but he was also carrying a piece of her with him- her laughter, her unwavering belief in him and the memories they have shared.
"Okay" Marc sighed "I should get my bags checked, don't want to miss my flight" as he glances up at the overhead board.
"Right" Tiffany replied a little saddened now. "I guess this is it then"?
Marc turns to her "I'll be back to visit soon. You are only a two hour flight remember" he smiles trying to reassure her.
Tiffany giggled, her spirits lifting. "Promise"? she asked holding out her pinky finger.
"Promise" he affirms linking his pinky with hers. He swiftly pulls her into a hug. It was a familiar embrace, one filled with years of shared experiences, laughter, and a deep rooted understanding. When they finally pulled away, Marc noticed the sheen of tears in Tiffany's eyes. "Hey, don't cry" he said "this isn't goodbye forever, its just a see you later".
"I know', she replied, her voice wavering. "I'm just really going to miss you".
"Me too" he admitted. As they exchanged one last look filled with unspoken words and promises.
With a deep breath Marc turned and walked towards the security gate, each step echoing with the bittersweet reality of change. Behind him he could feel Tiffany's gaze following him. As he passed through the metal detectors he glanced back one last time, catching her waving goodbye with a smile.
He waved back.
