I opened my eyes.
Same small wooden room. One window, a small bed, a tiny closet, and a bucket of books in the corner. I don't know why I always think I'm going to appear in a new, clean, big, beautiful room.
Not in this broken family.
Not in this broken town.
Maybe not even on this planet.
Once I got up and changed into the most comfortable dress I could find, I grabbed my favorite book and left the room. I walked to the front door and I could hear my dad screaming at my mom for something I didn't know about. Probably for being a little shit about her cooking. I walked out and closed the door behind me, glad to be able to shut the door on them every day heading out.
Walking along the stone road, I imagine leaving this place. I'd tell all my friends to come with me and we'd sail on a boat all the way to an island and live there. I walked into the bakery, and slipped into the back room.Aiden was near the back ,taking fresh bread out of the oven.I walked up behind him and stared at the bread he had placed on the wooden table.
"Hello,Emma."
"Hi Aiden" I said without taking my eyes off the bread, licking my lips hungrily.
"Here for your daily bread inspection Dr.Emmeline?" He looked up at me with a cute smile, winking.
"Yes." I said without missing a beat, clearly focused on the loaves.
"Ok take your time" he said as he headed to the front.
I took the loaves of bread and sat on the floor by the oven. I opened up my novel and read. Before I knew it, I heard a voice I recognized.
"Hey is Emma here yet?"
"Yeah she's in the back, Eve."
I waited for Everest to gracefully stride through the doorway,as always. She came up to me with a sketchbook in one hand and a pencil in the other.I threw her one of the loaves of bread, and got up from my seat.I tossed Aiden a coin as we emerged from the room.
"Thanks Aiden" I said right before we walked out the door.
"No problem Em" He said
"So Emma,I woke up this morning and I was like 'oh it's Emma's birthday so I need to get her a gift' and then I was like 'well what should I get her' and then Aiden showed up at my house and he was like 'hey what should we get Emma' and I was all like 'well we shou-'"
"Eve, just get to the goddamn point."
"Right, so Aiden wanted to do something really special and we know you were saving up for a boat so we bought you one!"
"Wait-" I pause her right at that moment. "You bought me a fucking BOAT?"
"Well, yes. Technically." She fumbles with her fingers.
"What do you mean 'technically'?"
"You know Lia Menola?"
"Stuck up, rude, snotty bitch- I mean," I cough a little to cover my snort. "Rich? Yeah."
"SHE bought the boat under your name as a way to sell her dad's new products, and make it seem like she's a jolly get on your nerves in a way person, and she got a BIG BOAT ,a really cool one,it has a built in KITCHEN and 3 BEDROOMS."
"Wow that is cool"
"Yeah," I roll my eyes. "No. Fucking. Kidding."
"Is Aiden gonna be there?" My eyes light up with some sparks of excitement.
"Yeah, but it's supposed to be a surprise, but I know you hate surprises so that's why i'm telling you now, so just act surprised when they tell you but not so surprised that you give it away that I alre-"
"Ah, Look at that," To shut her up, "We're here!"
We jumped on the back of a wagon and rode the rest of the way to the docks. We hopped off and there was a beautiful big boat with the words "The Present" on it.Then out of thin air Lia,and 100 different people I didn't recognize popped up out of nowhere.
"Happy 17th birthday darling!I bought this humble small boat as a gift to you and you peasant friends!-Wait what?OH-You and your poor friends!I meant poor!"
"Oh wow thanks." I said with a fake smile plastered across my face
"AND we had baker boy make you a flower themed cake!"
On cue Aiden rolled out an amazing three layer cake with golden flowers, moving down in a spiral.
The journalists were there as well, and that's when I got nervous.Everyone would see my name in the paper the next morning.
Everyone,including my parents.
I tried to relax and be cool, but on the inside I was freaking out.If my dad found out I was given a boat he wouldn't let me keep it,he'd sell it and get more money for himself.
I had to come up with a plan.
