The cave we lived in was busy and noisy. Only I lay on a small ledge and watched my siblings play. Outside the last rays of sun disappeared behind the snow-capped mountain peaks and a crescent-shaped moon rose into the sky. Cold, ice-soaked air wafted into our cave and my siblings huddled together to keep each other warm. I knew that it would be of no use to try to cuddle up to my siblings, as they mostly scared me away again. For several weeks my pack seemed to be excluding me. They avoided me and kept a distance from me as if they didn't accept me. When there was something to eat, I only got the miserable leftovers. Sometimes the others even got aggressive and snapped at me when I tried to take a slightly larger piece of meat.

What had I done wrong? I had often asked my mother, but she had no answer for me either. My mother was the only one who still accepted me, so I went to her with my tail clamped between my back legs when the cold became too much for me and my thick snow-white fur. My parents weren't the alphas in our pack, but they had a pretty good reputation in the pack ... until I was born. At the beginning everyone treated me normally, but the older I got, the stranger they behaved towards me, until they finally avoided me or even evidently showed me by growling and biting that they did not accept me. My mother had often spoken to the alpha and asked for help, but he also sensed something about me that he didn't like.

With my head drooped and hanging ears , I let out a faint whine. My mother raised her head and looked at me kindly. She began to lick my face lovingly. Thankful, I snuggled up against her and enjoyed her warmth. Curiously, my mother sniffed me and began to lick me off completely to cover up my smell, which the rest of my family all found so strange. While she did this, I relaxed and fell into a deep sleep.

It was still dark when I woke up and my mother was no longer next to me. The cold crept uncomfortably through my body and in amazement I lifted my head and looked around. An angry growl came from a corner of the cave and I recognized my mother who had been cornered by two of my aunts. My mother snapped angrily at her sisters, but they wouldn't let her through. The next moment I felt a burning pain in one of my hind legs. Startled and pained, I yelped when someone pulled me out of our cave by my hind leg. Freezing wind blew through my fur as I left the shelter of the cave and was finally released. The Alpha was standing right in front of me, looking down at me, snarling and growling.

"Get out of here."I ducked submissively in front of him and held my head low.

"Alpha ... but ... but why? I haven't done anything." I said softly.

He snapped at me with a bloodcurdling growl and bit my left shoulder deeply. His sharp teeth sank into my flesh and I didn't know if it was my mother who screamed so loudly or if it was me. The Alpha pulled me further away from the cave and roughly threw me to the ground.

"I SAID GO! YOU ARE NOT ONE OF US!" he yelled at me.

I looked at the Alpha in fear. So it had come to this. My mother and I were always afraid that one day the pack would cast me out. Since my father died, my mother was no longer able to protect me from the pack. I was the lowest ranked and it was only a matter of time. With tears in my eyes from fear and pain, I looked at my mother who was still aggressively defending herself against her sisters.

"Let go of me! I'll go with her!" she yelled at her sisters.

The alpha turned to her. "You will stay here! I will not allow you to go with this THING!" He literally spat the last word out between his bared teeth.

I knew why he didn't want to let my mother go. After my father died, my mother became interesting to our Alpha. I had noticed several times that he was sneaking around her and trying to win her over. Since he was the alpha, it was only a matter of time before she would go to him.
