CHESS WAS a game that meant a lot to Noor Zabini.
As a young girl, Noor would spend countless hours playing the game with her late father. Sitting in his study, in thoughtful silence, as the sun dipped lower and lower in the sky, a glass of hot coco by her side.
Playing chess with her father was one of the only memories she had of her father, the rest of him a fuzzy memory. Playing chess with her father was one of the only memories Noor had from her childhood where she was happy.
The rest of Noor's childhood was filled with empty rooms and a distant mother.
And so chess was a game that had a special place in Noor's heart.
When Noor played the game, if she closed her eyes tight enough, and believed it hard enough, Noor could go back in her father's study. She could go back to that small room. To a time before loneliness and sadness. To a time filled with happiness and warmth.
BUT LATLEY chess had lost all of it's fun. All of her opponents are too easy to beat, all of her games are too short.
That is until she met Ronald Weasley.
Noor, who prided herself on being the best chess player she knew, was bested easily by him. In a matter of minutes, he had defeated her. In a matter of minutes he had done what no one, since Noor's late father, could do : beat her in a game of chess.
This fact should have infuriated Noor, and it did at first, but then, strangely, it didn't.
Because when Noor spent time with Ron, Noor didn't have to close her eyes to feel happiness and warmth any more.
