What is a desert?
Well... it gets little rain and has extreme temperatures. You probably already know that deserts are some of the harshest places on Earth. Desert strictly scientifically speaking is defined as a place with 10 inches of rain or even less in a year.
Hot deserts are found around the tropics, where the Earth's wind system brings cloudless days. This means that there are no clouds to shield the ground, which in summer becomes baking hot during the day and cold at night as the heat is lost back to the atmosphere. Deserts at higher latitudes are cold deserts. Land formations also affect rainfall: some deserts occur within large land mases such as Australia, where winds from time the coast have lost all their moisture by the time they get there; others occur on the lee, far, side of the mountains... where there is no rain left in the wind which has blown over the mountains.
