Siting on my roof. I look to the stars, and wonder what it would be like to be one. Would it be peaceful or freeing? I know that I am filled with hate, but hate is all I know. I've never had a happy mother to to teach me to be kind. Or even a father who taught me how to respect others. I've never known what it's like to receive love or kindness, so I don't know how to show it. I don't want to live with all of this weight anymore.
The next morning my alarm clock yells at me to get ready for school. Everyone says it's for my won good, but all it does is add to my already fucked up life. School is like an inescapable prison. Even so, I have to go.
I sigh as I get up.
"I should probably get easy now," I say quietly to myself.
I get dressed and head downstairs to leave. As soon as I get there I'm met with the look of disgust on my fathers face. He treats both me and my mom like we are the bane of his existence. My mothers pleading expression breaks me. I know I need to get her out of here, but I'm useless.
I quickly rush out of the house in order to avoid starting something. I make my way to school. I'll just go through the day, not bothering anyone. They won't bother me. I think this just as someone comes up to me,
"Hey Malikai! How we doin' today?" Nirvana blurts out of nowhere.
She has been bothering me for the last couple weeks. I'm not sure why she won't let me be. I let out a quick response to avoid making this conversation any longer than it has to be.
"Hey Nirvana, I'm fine. But I'm a little busy so I'll have to catch you some other time". A wave of disappointment flashed in her eyes, but she recovers her smile quickly.
"Oh okay . Well I guess I'll see you around. I hope you have a good day!"
I walk away feeling a little guilty, but she will be fine.I make it through the next few classes with no interruptions. This went all went to hell in art history. My art teacher, Mrs. White explained that we would be doing a paper on the importance of emotion in artworks.
"This paper will be a partner project and I will be assigning your partners" She explains this with her usual cheery smile.
The class simultaneously groans in frustration, me alongside them. She names off all the groups, and then gets to me.
"Let's see here, Mr. Lawrence you will be working with Nirvana"
Some time passes and I start towards Nirvana to talk to her about how we will do the project, as we have no class time.
"Hey Nirvana we can go to my house to work on ht project. I don't care what we do as long we get it done quickly" I say this with a little more annoyance than I meant to.
It may seem like I don't want anything to do with her or this project, but that's the idea. I don't mean to be hurtful, but really don't have enough energy for any of this.
She retorts back, "Fine, but you didn't need to be rude. I haven't done anything to you".
"Whatever" I say as I leave the classroom. Before she can answer, I'm out the door. When i get home Nirvana is already there waiting for me. I don't really know how she beat me there.
That's when I hear the screaming coming from inside my house. We both run inside and are met with chaos. Family pictures shattered, pieces of glass glimmering all over the floor, and an indescribable sadness radiating off of my mother. The smell of alcohol is on my fathers breath, In an instant I knew this would end badly.
My father screams at my mom, " He should just leave everything is his fault! I mean look what he is doing to me. Do you think I like to yell at you like this? I lOve you and i wouldn't have to do this if you would just realize that your "son" is a monster".
"You know what I am tired of this bullshit. You do not own me. He is OUR son and he deserves parents that love him, he deserves better than us. I should've stood up to you long ago. You need to realize that Illiana's death was not his fault, she was going through a hard time. He was not the only one who didn't notice. We didn't either" She says ashamed.
" He was her twin, it was his job to protect her. That is what I taught him" He slurs his words and stumbles towards my mother. I can see the vein in his forehead pop out.
"HIS JOB!? We were her parents it was our job to protect the both of them, and we fail, miserably. You did not "teach" him anything but what a lazy, drink of a father, coward looks like. I am tired of putting up with the way you treat my son.
I can hear the sheer sadness in her voice when she says this. She had taken his abuse for far too long. She could only hold it in so long before she went crazy. I feel myself start to panic. My palms grow sweaty and my heart rates picks up significantly. Nirvana looks at me nervously and we both knew, we needed to get out.
We try to run out the door, but my father turns to me.
"Where are you going boy? You did this, you tore this family apart" Venom spews from his words. He then raises his hand towards me.
This is when Nirvana grabs my hand and races out of the house in an attempt to get my father away from me. to our disadvantage, he followed suit. Surprisingly, he goes to car, gets in, and drives away.
I watch as he leaves this life behind and I sigh relieved, knowing he won't be coming back.
I turn to nirvana as she looks as scared as I, I am so sorry you had to see that" I say still shaken up.
"Hey it's okay. I never knew you had so much going on" She puts on a brave face and tries to comfort me.
I nod at her.
Sometime later, I find myself on my roof again. Only this time I'm not alone. Nirvana rests her head on my shoulder, "How many stars do you think are up there?"
I look up at her and smile, "I don't know. Hey Nirvana?"
"Yeah what's up?"
I take a deep breath and say "Thank you... for showing me kindness".
She grabs my hand and we drift away imagining what it would be like to be a star floating in a never ending galaxy.
