I ran faster that I thought I could, my legs aching, and my heart pounding. I slammed the door behind me, stopping to lock the door, but my hands were shaking, and my eyes were blurry, and in the heat of the moment I chose not to bother.
A decision I would regret for the rest of my shortly lived life.
I jerkily opened the window, and climbed out onto the fire escape. I had never been on it before, it was an unsupported chunk of metal, meters off the ground, and the very thought of it made me feel sick. I hesitantly put my foot down, it shifted under my weight and made the most awful screeching noise, that was somewhere in between a cat screaming and nails dragging slowly down a chalkboard. I cringed and walked further out onto the fire escape.
At precisely that moment, the man kicked open my door, the suddenty of the situation making me jump and slip. I fell, almost off, but I barely managed to grab on. The man started pacing, reciting some monologue, that I assume explained what he was about to do, or why he was doing it, but all I could hear was the thundering sound of rain falling all around me.
The man walked towards me, a petrifying smile on his face, and a horrifying glimmer in his piercing blue eyes, and I knew at once that there were no possible good outcomes to this situation. My arms started to ache, and I knew that I couldn't hold on for much longer. My left hand slowly started to slide down, until I was only holding on with my right.
The man came right up to me, and I could now clearly see the dim light from the apartment across the street reflecting on the knife in his hand. He raised it above my remaining hand, preparing to put me in as much pain as possible before I fell to my inevitable death. My arm was killing me, and I was in so much pain that I could feel my now weak heartbeat beating in my ears. I knew that no matter how much I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to hold on. My hand started to loosen its grip, and then, let go.
Do you ever see scenes in movies when people fall in slow motion? Well, that's exactly what happens. I could see his wicked smile looking down on me as I fell, but I simply turned away. The city lights were blaring around me, in a terrifyingly beautiful way. I saw people walking below me, unaware of what was happening.
I almost felt like I was falling forever. In an abyss of lights and colors, and I almost liked it.
It might just be the most beautiful thing in the world. But you can't fall forever, eventually you have to hit the ground.
