Bradley opened his eyes and rubbed them blearily. Feeling the warmth of his girlfriend in the spot next to him, he rolled over and wrapped his arms around the small figure. The movement jostled the bed, and woke the smaller form.
“Brad, just let me sleep.” Amanda grumbled.
Her boyfriend smiled and playfully poked Amanda to fully wake her up. It was still extremely early, around 6 to 7 in the morning, but Bradley had to wake up around this time in order to reach his workplace, a bank, in the neighbouring city, from the suburban area they lived in. Bradley sighed resignedly at his lover’s morning tiredness and got out of bed to start getting dressed. Annoyed by the exit of her boyfriend, Amanda rose out of bed too, and fished her bathrobe out from a pile of clothes on the floor, the result of the previous night’s activities.
She smiled, as she thought about it. The night had started with them celebrating their anniversary with dinner at their favourite restaurant, then coming home and watching TV together. While on one of the commercial breaks, they got a little side-tracked and had ended up in the bedroom.
As she headed to the bathroom, she caught sight of Bradley heading out the door towards his dark blue car, and she stuck her head out the window and called down to him.
“Babe, are you going to work already?”
A reply floated up to her. “Yeah, my boss says we have to be early today.”
“Okay, be safe, alright?”
Amanda only received a laugh in response. Waving as Bradley backed out of the driveway, she turned back into the flat, trying to shake off the feeling of uneasiness that filled her.
Humming a nameless tune, Amanda gathered her coat, shrugged it on and stepped out into the cold winter morning, shivering a little. Amanda had a part time job as an assistant coroner in the city morgue, but was had decided to become a full time coroner, which she could only achieve if she had the part time job for an extended period of time. Although she wasn’t a particularly sensitive person in terms of seeing dead bodies, she was partial to small children, so she had some problems with the deceased bodies of infants. Shaking off thoughts of dead children, she stepped into her car, and began her drive to the morgue.
As she stepped into the warmth of the building, she started to pull out her surgical gloves and pull them onto her cold fingers. She walked down the hallway at a leisurely pace, as she had arrived early. Once she got down to the last room, where she normally worked, she was greeted by her colleague Emmeline, one of the senior coroners that she had become friends with.
“Hey, Amanda.”
“Hi Em,”
“We have a new body in today. It seems like it was a suicide.” Emmeline informed her.
