Imagine this.
It was a sunny day with barely any clouds, probably the hottest days of May. A friend I had in the neighborhood came over to my house with the cheeriest smile on her face. Her name was Khali and we went exploring everywhere in our neighborhood.
"Hey, Atlas! I want to show you something."
I told my mom that I would be going out with Khali and left the house. Her ambitious personality sparked my adventurous side and I always wanted to explore with her.
"You won't believe what I found! It's so pretty."
Khali started running and I joined in with her. The area we lived in was surrounded by a slightly wooded area. There were a lot of entrances in so we would claim the wooded areas as our playground. We even had plans of making a tree fort, but we never had the materials and our parents thought it was a silly idea.
"I'm surprised we didn't find this area sooner."
I realized where we were in the woods. Some big oak trees were looming overhead, but what surprised me the most was the opening in the forest canopy, shining directly on a large patch of flowers. Her strawberry blonde hair swished around as she embraced the sunlight and danced around in the flowers. Dandelions flew up in the air and I was enraptured by her warmth, watching her dance around in pure bliss. She always loved flowers and to see her at her happiest moment was so satisfying to watch. I didn't care about anything else, but her. I felt my heart beating out of my chest and that's the day I realized I had feelings for her. I joined in with her, dancing along and we both started laughing. We laid down in the grass and relaxed. That Saturday was one of the best memories I had.
But as things change, those memories fade to a duller color and people start fading away, too.
I woke up to my alarm clock, blaring a loud buzzing noise. I checked my phone and noticed a few texts and a reminder that stung my heart.
"Khali's birthday"
I got up and changed my clothes. I forgot I set an alarm so I could see her early in the morning. I put on my trenchcoat and drove over to the store to get a bouquet of carnations. As I drove, thoughts trampled my brain as I remembered what good times we had. At that moment, I wished we could have been able to build that tree fort and escape together, but wishing doesn't work all the time and luck wasn't on my side either. I sighed as I parked in a spot near the cemetery. I felt eyes tear up as I walked closer and closer. I looked down at the ground and noticed some flowers growing around her grave. They were red spider lilies, symbolizing death, and seeing someone that you'll never see again. I couldn't hold back my tears and started furiously wiping my eyes as the tears fell down my cheeks. I gently set down the carnations and hovered over her grave.
Thinking about it, Khali would've wanted me to be happy so I'm trying my best not to think about sad things. Although I wish she was still alive today, I'll still carry on her legacy. I just hope in the afterlife, she gets my flowers and dandelions seeds circle her as she dances.
