Lillian’s POV

After dropping Nate off at Nancy and Tom’s, his grandparent’s house, I headed home, which was really only thee minutes down the road.

When I walked in the front door, Landon, my eighteen year old brother, had his eyes narrowed and arms crossed, waiting for me.

“What?” I asked.

“You met someone. And you like him,” Landon said without a trace of doubt.

“Why would you say that?” I asked innocently.

“When you got out of your car, you had that stupid goofy grin on. And you only grin like that when you like someone.”

I stayed silent. Landon was right.

He spoke again, “So, who’s the guy?”

“No one,” I said, turning my head away.

“Fine, don’t tell me now, but I’ll find out, Lilly, you just wait,” he said, walking off  towards his bedroom.

That night I went to bed thinking of Nate. How could I possibly like the guy when I’d only known him for a few hours? But then again, I felt like I’d known him for years... I wonder how he felt...

The next morning I woke up in a great mood; a better mood than usual. It was nice. I threw on a flowery summer skirt, a white tank top, and my favorite jean jacket. After braiding my long blonde hair down my back, I skipped down to the kitchen where breakfast was being served.

My gaze met Landon’s piercing blue eyes. It was funny how much he wanted to know who I liked.

“Morning Mum, morning Dad,” I said to my parents as they walked in from the sitting room, drinking their tea.

“Hello, darling,” Mum said while sitting down at the table.

The minute everyone was seated, Landon began talking. “Mum, dad, do you know Lilly has a crush,” sending me a smirk.

I rolled my eyes. “Do you, Lil?” my dad said, raising his eyebrows.

“No, Dad. Landon just seems to think that.”

“I know who it is,” my mum said. My eyes widened slightly as she spoke again, “It’s Nancy and Tom’s grandkid. You spent all day with him yesterday. And you hadn’t liked anyone before yesterday. Oh, James, what’s his name?” Mum asked my dad.

“Oh, uh... Nate!”

“Yes, him!” Mum said as I rolled my eyes at my family’s immaturity.

I didn’t feel like denying it anymore because I knew they wouldn’t believe it now, “Okay, fine, I like Nate. But seriously, I’m sixteen years old. Haven’t you gotten used to the whole, ‘I like boys’ thing?”

My dad shrugged, “You haven’t had a crush since that stupid McLane boy in the eighth grade.”

“Not true! You don’t know my crushes. I don’t tell you guys everything,” I said, frustrated. My gaze softened towards my family, “Okay, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to blow a gasket at you all.” I glanced at the clock. It was already ten! “Oh, gosh, I told Nate I’d pick him up at 9:50!” I said, stuffing the last bite of egg in my mouth and pushing my chair in. “Thanks for breakfast, Mum! See you all later,” I said, slipping on my cream colored canvas sneakers and running out the door.

I jumped in the car and drove a little too fast for the tiny, dirt road to Nancy and Tom’s. I jogged to the front door and rang the doorbell.

I heard a muffled, “I’ll get it,” but couldn’t tell who it was.

Nate’s POV

I opened Gram and Gramps front door and saw Lilly smiling. But her smile quickly changed to a confused look when she saw me wearing nothing but a pair of lounge pants.

Then she laughed, “So, this is what you’re planning to wear for our outing today?”

“Oh, yeah, totally. Actually, I was thinking of losing the pants and just wearing boxers,” I said, laughing.

“Oh, god. Please, no!” she said, doubling over in laughter.

“I’m just kidding. Sorry, I didn’t realize it had gotten so late. Mind if I change?”

“Please do,” she said, wandering into the kitchen probably to find my grandparents.

Before I ran up the stairs, I heard Lilly’s happy-go-lucky voice yell, “Nancy an Tom!” And then I heard them reply back, “Lilly!” I laughed once more before heading to my room to put some clothes on.

A few minutes later, after throwing on a pair of shorts, tee shirt, and a sweatshirt and running my fingers though my hair, I headed back downstairs to see Lilly and my grandparents all hysterically laughing in the living room. What could be so funny, I thought.

Then I heard them. Gram and Gramps were telling the story when we were visiting them in London once and we stopped for lunch and the waitress asked me if I wanted to sit next to my “mummy.” At the time I was really scared of mummies and I thought she was talking abut dead people mummies, not my mother. I screamed and started running around with a fork in my hand and my eyes closed because I was afraid to see the “mummy.” Gramps came up behind me, grabbed my shoulders and yelled “Boo!” as loud as he could, scaring me so much that I peed in my pants. It was so embarrassing...

“Gram! Why are you telling that story? That’s so embarrassing!”

Gramps spoke up, “That’s the point, sonny!”

Lilly turned around to face me, her bright eyes glowing with happiness, “Nate, I didn’t know you thought mummies were so scary. Still scared?”

“I was, like, three then,” I said.

Gram cut in, “Actually, dear, you were seven.” Lilly immediately started laughing her loud, contagious laugh and I couldn’t help but smile.

“Oh, good times,” Lilly said, standing up from the couch, “Well, Nancy, Tom, I had a nice chat with you and thanks for that great story. I planned some stuff for Nate and I today, so we’ll be back a little later. Bye!”

Back in the car, Lilly was still laughing about the story. “I’m sorry Nate, that was jus so funny! But don’t worry, everyone has had their embarrassing childhood memories.”

“What was yours?”

“Who, me? None, I’m too perfect.... Just kidding. I have plenty of embarrassing stories to tell you. Once at school in fourth grade, someone started a food fight and I couldn’t resist joining in. I saw this one kid that I absolutely hated because he had put gum in my hair in the third grade, but anyway, I went to chuck a piece of nasty rice and mashed potato thing at him, but he ducked and it ended up hitting the principal right smack in the face. And man, was I in trouble...” she said, smiling.

“Wow. What a little dare devil,” I said, impressed. She looked very innocent on the outside, but I guess that wasn’t the case.

“Dare is my middle name... Well, not exactly, but I totally wish it was.”

We both started laughing and before I knew it, Lilly had parked Georgina and she was getting out. It seemed like we were in the middle of no where.

“Lilly, where are we going?” I asked nervously.

“You’ll see,” she replied with a smile.
