Chapter 10

"She knows that" Dr. Blossom says assuringly.

"The problem is, you two have gone public now, so.." Archie buts in.

"Archie.." Penelope says his name, almost like a warning.

"No, she should know" Veronica says. "This entire family will be implicated if this ends badly"

"....badly?"

This hangs in the air, uncomfortably. Cheryl can't look at her.

"Oh. Badly. Like where I become a meal" Toni says, realizing.

Archie chokes back laughter. Cheryl grins, wraps her arm around Toni. Even Penelope has the chuckle.

Veronica exasperated, heads back into the kitchen. Archie shrugs and goes after her.

"Hi Toni!"

On the balcony, Josie leaps over the rail, holding a bouquet of wildflowers. Reggie and Betty follow her. She bounces over to kiss Toni on the cheek and hands Toni the flowers.

"I'm Josie. You do smell good"

"Josie.." Cheryl warns.

"It's alright, Toni and I are going to be great friends"

"And your Reggie, right?" Toni says, extending her hand.

"Yes, pleasure to meet you"

But he shies away from her hand.

"You won't hurt her, Reggie" Josie whisper's encouragingly.

He isn't so sure and Betty notices. She then reaches her hand out to Toni's instead.

"Hi, I'm Betty" she smiles gently.

"Nice to meet you" Toni says back.

Cheryl then takes Toni's hand in hers.

"I'll give you a tour of the house"

"I'll see you soon" Josie says to Toni with meaning.

Cheryl shoots Josie a look, which Toni catches before Cheryl guides her upstairs. When they get there, Toni takes notice of the wall of dozens of silk squares with tassels. Toni looks closer.

"Graduation caps?"

"Mhm. A private joke. We matriculate a lot"

"Ugh what a nightmare, repeating high school"

"True, but the younger we start out in a new place, the longer we can stay there"

Toni shivers at the thought of it, as they continue on..

"And...this is my room"

Toni enters to find a wall of glass doors open to a deck, with the river beyond. The rest is floor to ceiling CD's, vinyl, track tapes ect...with a sophisticated I-pod/stereo set up.

"So your obsessed with music. But.." she looks around. "No bed?"

"No sleep"

"Ever?"

"No nightmares, no drool, no snoring"

Toni considers this, as she runs her hand along the wall of CD's, studying the titles.

"Do you have any favorites?" Cheryl asks her.

"Depends. Alternative? jazz? Sixties, seventies.."

"Ooh, she knows her music. Alright, nineties. Eighteen-nineties. Classical"

"I'd have to say...debussy"
(Omfg)

Cheryl looks at her, surprised. She smiles.

"My favorite too"

Off their conversation, Cheryl pulls out a CD and puts it on. A solo piano version of 'Clair De Lune' begins to play.

Cheryl moves to her, taking her hand, then she starts to turn her in a pirouette, dancing with her- but Toni breaks off and backs away.

"No dancing"

"Ever?"

"No tripping, no falling, no derision"

"I can always make you" Cheryl says mischievously.

"You don't scare me"

"You really shouldn't have said that"

Cheryl grins, a low growling sounds in the back of her throat. Toni laughs and backs onto the deck and into the rail. Cheryl appears in the doorway, shifting into a half-crouch, about to pounce.

"Don't you dare-"

Suddenly, Toni's airborne as Cheryl tackles her and they fly off the deck. Toni then finds herself in a tree, in Cheryl's arms. When she realizes where she is, she laughs, delighted. It's infectious, Cheryl laughs heartily too..

Blossom house
Living room

Penelope and Dr. Blossom gaze out the window. Cheryl's laughter filters inside to them; Penelope, in turn, smiles.

"She's brought her to life"

"She's been alone too long.. but how can it end well?"

"Josie has been wrong before"

"Not often"

Penelope turns to Clifford, gentle but absolutely firm.

"Clifford, Toni is what she wants. It will work out, somehow"

Dr. Blossom smiles at her with love, then takes her hand as they look back out the window.

Back to the tree

Cheryl looks Toni in the eye.

"Trust me?"

"In theory"

"Then close your eyes"

Toni does, warily. Cheryl grips her more firmly, then leaps them to another tree like a flying squirrel. Then, again, to the top of another tree. She easily gets a foothold, while holding Toni.

"Open"

"She does, to the most astonishing birds eyes Veiw of the valley, river, and mountains beyond.
