In a superhuman society, you would think that life would be amazing. But you’re sadly mistaken. Take it from me, a 14-year-old boy about to move onto high school, getting chased by a villain.
“Get back here, brat! That stolen money isn’t yours!” The villain yelled
“Well, it’s not yours either!” I yelled back, dodging my way through people. Unfortunately for me, the villain had some flying quirk that gave him wings. I couldn’t use my quirk even if I wanted to. Wait a sec! Is that a utility hole cover? I thought and sprinted out onto the street.
“Stupid move, kid!” The villain dove for me. I stood on the utility hole cover and focused my energy. I could feel the air around my feet heating up. I channeled the heat under my heels as I lifted onto my toes and began turning up the temperature. I heard the air fizzle while it began to ionize. I focused a bit harder trying to create a magnetic field with the ionized air particles. Once I felt my feet start to push off of the ground, I jumped into the air with a serious boost. I turned my body as I got smacked in the face by the villain. We both plummeted to the ground and landed right in front of my intended destination, the police station. I could hear the police starting to come outside, but my head hurt from the fall. I struggled to get up as the villain slowly made his way toward me.
“You took me by surprise for a second, but did you seriously think a kid like you could stop me?” the villain said in a cocky tone.
I rolled onto my back, “No, but they can,” I pointed to the police as they came through the door.
“Don’t move! You’re under arrest!” An officer said.
“Oh sh-” The villain was wrapped in what looked like wires.
“Nice job, kid! I happened to see a bit of what you did,” I looked at the owner of the voice.
“No way, you’re Wired, the Capture Hero!” I said. Wired had curly black hair, and his costume consisted of a black and white jumpsuit with white gloves. His quirk allows him to shoot wires from his fingertips, though he isn’t able to detach them.
“Good to know my reputation precedes me,” He laughed as the police took care of the money and the villain. “That was a dangerous thing you did, kid, but you did the right thing. However, you should be careful about using your quirk in public. There are laws for a reason.”
“Yeah, I’m aware,” I checked my phone, “Shoot! I’m gonna be late for school! Thanks for the help,” I called out as I ran to school.
The appearance of quirks created havoc at first. As governments struggled to accommodate for the new superhuman society, people with evil intentions abused these new powers and committed crimes. However, people who used their powers to stop those who committed crimes were praised as heroes. Now heroes are a part of our everyday life. The more popular you are, the more money you can earn. Most kids aspire to be heroes, and I'm one of them. One of the greatest heroes of our time is a Japanese hero named All Might. He is a pillar of hope in Japan. He managed to drop the crime rate in Japan down 6%, while in other countries, it rests at 20% or higher. My quirk is “Ionization.” It gives me the ability to ionize the air around my body up to an inch away. My skin can produce heat hot enough to make plasma. I can even control the plasma after being created. However, I haven’t found much use in my power yet. Other than the fact of making magnetic fields, my quirk isn’t too useful in combat.
Quirks are hereditary, which means that you can inherit them from your parents. My mom’s quirk could transfer heat from one object to another, and my dad could regulate his body temperature. However, the doctor said my quirk was a slight mutation.
“The Hero Course, huh?” My school counselor said while looking at my career choices.
“Yeah. You know I have the grades to go to Riverson Academy over in New York,” I said, leaning forward in my chair.
“Yes. But do you have the skill? You may stand up for bullied kids and help out around the community, but that doesn’t make you a hero,” She said with a concerned look.
“I’ll be fine… I’m pretty strong if I do say so myself,” I pounded my chest proudly.
“Ok… Well, if you believe you can pass, then, by all means, go ahead,” My counselor said, returning her eyes to the paper. “Are you also aware of the fact that Riverson requires that you stay in a dormitory?” My counselor asked.
“Yes, and that the dorms are coed also. I have also gotten permission from my mom,” I said then mumbled, “With a bit of difficulty, though.”
“Well, then the district will gladly fund your travel fees. Make us here in Texas proud.”
After I left the counselor’s office, I decided to go to the restroom. I looked in the mirror, and if I were to describe myself, I’d say I am the type who doesn’t care much about appearances. My black hair is short, but a bit messy. I usually wear the same olive green cargo jacket every day with a plain sweater and jeans. I’m tall, around 6 feet, and my eyes are dark brown.
Just as I finished washing my hands, the door to the restroom burst open, “Get in there, nerd! You think you can get away with not giving us our money for lunch. It’s time you learn how to behave towards us,” Harvey and his thugs came in the restroom carrying a kid by his shirt collar. Harvey is a mountain for his age, 16, even though we’re in middle school, he was held back two grades. He’s going to pass this year thanks to the tutors, but he still bullies the other kids who are weaker than him. He even has a strength-enhancing quirk. It makes me sick to my stomach.
I walked towards them, “I thought I told you to stop bullying people,” I said.
“Oh, it’s Will. You want to be a hero and help this weakling, huh?” He said, tossing the kid to the side and cracking his knuckles. He and his thugs surrounded me, grinning. I didn’t want to fight since it would ruin my chances to get into Riverson, but when I looked at the kid, he had his phone out recording, I assumed. He held a thumbs up, which I took as he was going to help me prove my innocence.
“Hey, I don’t want to fight. I mean, it’s the last day of school does it matter if you get your lunch or not?” I said knowing that they won’t stop.
“Are you scared or something? Oh wait, you’re planning on going to that hero school, aren’t you?” Harvey said stepping forward. His thugs closed the circle, I counted 9 Including Harvey. “Maybe I should have you fight me so you can’t go to that school.” He laughed and his thugs joined in.
“You’re messed up…” I said starting to get angry, “If you are dumb enough to think that I don’t know how to avoid that outcome, I’m surprised you’re going to pass eighth grade.”
“Wanna fight that bad huh?!” Harvey yelled and charged. I could see the muscles in his arm bulging. I stepped back in front of one of his thugs. Right before Harvey punched I ducked and he hit his thug square in the face knocking him out cold. I then swept Harvey’s legs, knocking him off his feet. I stepped on his back trying to show I’ve won.
“Concede… that word might be too big, give up,” I said.
“Fine…” I lifted my foot as he got up and dusted himself off, “Grab Grant and let’s leave.” His thugs looked stunned but they grabbed Grant and left the restroom.
“Thanks for that,” the kid walked up to me.
“No problem, thanks for recording it. Though it seems it ended calmly so I won’t need it,” I said.
After school, I rushed home ready for the break. I’ll just skip through most of the boring stuff. You see, the school year lasts from January 20 to December 20, with breaks. We have a week off in March and a month and a half in June and July. We also have two weeks off in November. There are some days off of school but other than that we have a month in-between years. I hear that the school system used to be different before quirks and that school ended in the summer but I find that hard to believe. Anyway, I trained my body for that month off of school. I did martial arts and trained with my quirk. My quirk isn’t that strong and has a major set back: when I use it I can burn myself with the plasma I create. It helps that the maximum heat my body can take is raised because of my quirk but plasma can burn at around 45000°F. I estimate the maximum heat I can take is around 30000°F. Plus, if I use my quirk too much my body can overheat and I could faint. I’m also worried that if I use too much plasma it could inflict permanent burns.
On January 19 I turned 15, my birthday party was more of a going-away party but it was fun nonetheless. My parents, my friends, and some of my family were there. Afterward, my parents took me to the airport.
“Be sure to visit Will,” Mom said.
“And make us proud,” Dad added on.
“I will. See you!” I ran through the gate to enter the plane. I wasn’t too worried. It was currently 8 a.m., and the flight time from Texas to New York was around 3 hours. The Practical Exam starts at 3 p.m., so I was sure I would make it.
As the plane lifted off I felt a bit sad. Maybe it was homesickness or anxiety but either way, I had to pass. If I don’t, my chances of becoming a pro hero decrease drastically. Those were the thoughts that passed through my head as the plane prepared to land in New York City.
