CONTAINS SWEARING
Hope you enjoy my Halloween oneshot. Happy Halloween!
It was late midnight, the 1st of November. 31st of October, Halloween having just ended. And I was in a graveyard. How I ended up here I cannot recall. I think it was a dare? But it was a bad idea.
The night was cold, dark and cloudy. A cloud shifted and the light of the full, red moon shone eerily across the headstones of dead people. The intimidating cillowett of the church towered above me. What was a breeze earlier that night became a strong wind that howled through the whispering trees. The gate into the cemetery creaked loudly. As if someone was putting sound effects into a horror movie. The air tasted like the smell of metal and blood. And smelled like raw flesh and mould. It was getting colder and colder by the minute and all I was wearing was a Halloween costume. I was dressed like a zombie. Ripped clothes, tattered shoes, green facepaint and fake blood. Whose idea was it to leave the coats at home?
To get rid of some of my nervous adrenaline, I took to looking and reading the headstones. And that's when I saw my own name on one of them. A sudden chill went through me. And though it was cold I don't think it had anything to do with the weather. I was dead... But alive. I was there. Standing there alive, but apparently I was dead. And buried right under my feet.
I felt the urge to dig down and see what's down there. If I'm actually buried here. Or if they made a mistake and buried someone they thought was me.
But I was pulled out of my thoughts by a disturbing sound. It sounded like the type of sound effect you would hear if the ground was opening. Then I realised that that was exactly what was happening.
As far as I could see in the darkness, the ground in front of each and every headstone was opening.
I stumbled backwards from where I was standing and slumped against the tree behind me. Except it wasn't a tree. And it moved. Then it grabbed me and tugged hard at my arm. It felt like whatever it was was trying to rip my arm off. I turned and screamed. It was a zombie. Not someone dressed up for trick or treating but a real zombie.
And they were coming out of the ground all around me. Blue-green with boned sticking out at impossible angles. Missing hands, feet, or ears, their eyes rolling madly in their socets, their heads lolling helplessly from shoulder to shoulder as they all limp towards me with their arms out. Some of them dragging a foot along the ground behind them. They tripped over each other in their rush to get to me. To make me one of them. To drag me under with them before the sun rises to do the same to another innocent soul next year. To make me as merciless and lifeless as them.
Everything suddenly made sense. The gravestone with my name, no exit. One person is chosen every year to bring under and become a lifeless doll. A zombie. I looked more carefully at the gravestones. On half of them, the date was October 31st. All different years. And I was next. Everything gets planned. There's no undoing it.
Unless...
I reached into my pocket. I had a fake knife for my Halloween costume but it was sharp enough to use. I couldn't find it. I looked in my other pocket.
Nothing.
Then I saw the zombie closest to me holding it.
Shit.
I had to run.
Now.
I saw the cillowhett of the church in the distance and made a run for it. Jumping over gravestones, ducking under trees, trying not to get killed by a crowd of zombies.
After what felt like days, I got to the church. I was about to go in when I heard a scream. A woman's scream. What if the same was happening to her?
I ran to the back of the church and found the door ajar. I went in, switching on my torch and closing the door behind me making sure to lock it. The door made an eerie creak which echoed through the empty church.
Empty?
Where did the scream come from then?
There it was again. Louder. Agonising. It came from upstairs. I went up. My every step sounding louder then it was.
She screamed again. The scream ringing in my ears. Surely I must almost be at the top? I've been walking for an eternity.
I took a few more steps up the spiral stairway and got to the top. There was a girl strapped to a wooden chair in the middle of the room. I looked around to make sure there were no zombies before I causiously walked over to her. Slowly starting to make out small details of her face. I couldn't tell if the was wearing a Halloween costume or if she got attaked by these monsters. Or both.
When he got to her she looked up. She was crying and shaking. Her lips trembled as she whispered "please, please help me. I'm supposed to die tonight. And so are you. We have to escape. Now." I started to untie her when we heard the zombies. Trying to break down the door downstairs. I untied her quicker and looked for an alternative way out. There was the rope that hung from the church bell. That was it. But she didn't look like she had enough energy or strength to do that now. So we took the stairs.
When we got to the bottom, I turned off my torch and we went to the back door. It didn't sound like the zombies knew about it.
But when I opened the door, there were millions of them. All waiting to pull us down.
And you'll be next.
Happy Halloweeeeeeeen
