The sand blew in clouds either side of the car as they sped through the hot desert. The heat of the sun glaring down on the landscape was nearly unbearable and the broken air conditioner certainly wasn't helping their situation. Polnareff groaned for what seemed like the hundredth time that day as he spoke up yet again.
"Mr Joestaaar," he called, dramatically draping his hand over his face, "When will we get to the next town? I'm dying."
"Polnareff if you complain one more time I will leave you on the side of the road. Understood?" Joseph glanced into the rear-view mirror harshly at the Frenchman as he spoke. "Besides I'm sure Jotaro and Kakyoin have it worse than you, they're still in their bloody uniforms. Why are you still in your uniforms by the way? Isn't it too hot? And shouldn't they be really gross and dirty at this point?"
"Jiji, you've been wearing the same clothes since we left Japan. You really can't talk. Besides, it's not like we don't know how to use a washing machine. We're not kids." Jotaro's tone was harsh and sharp, yet still managed to elicit a small chuckle from Kakyoin, who had been sitting silently next to him in the back seat for most of the day. They hadn't been attacked in a few days and he was beginning to get anxious. What was Dio planning and why was he waiting to do it? What if it was worse than what they'd fought already? What if it hurt someone badly? What if someone actually died this time? He was shaken from his thoughts by a light shove in his side.
"You alright?" Jotaro's voice was soft and quiet so that only he and Kakyoin could hear. He wouldn't ever live it down if the others knew he cared. "You've been spaced out almost all day. We can talk about it later if you feel comfortable. Till' then try and keep your mind off it yeah? Worrying won't do you any good. Especially not now." His expression softened and it almost seemed like he was smiling but he quickly coughed and covered his eyes with his hat and looked away - something Kakyoin had noticed he did when he was embarrassed.
He was glad Jotaro had offered his support. He didn't really feel like any of the others were quite who he needed to disclose his worries to. Polnareff was too easy-going and loose-lipped, he wasn't very close with Avdol, Joseph just reminded him too much of his own grandparents, and Iggy was, well, y' know, a dog. Jotaro though, Kakyoin considered him his first - his closest - friend. He trusted him more than he trusted himself. If anything happened to him... He shook his head and tried to rid himself of the thought. Jotaro was strong. He'd be fine. By the time the thought had left his head, they had arrived in the next town.
The car slowed to a halt and the rag-tag group of men (and Iggy) filed out in a mess of mumbled curses and squished limbs. While Joseph and Avdol went inside to organise their rooms, and Iggy went off... somewhere to do whatever it is he normally does, Kakyoin and Polnareff both made a move for the door - ending up in the both of them getting stuck halfway out the car. Joseph, upon seeing this decided that instead of helping he would take the time to keel over laughing. Jotaro, annoyed with his grandfather, grabbed the arms of the two, giving a rough tug and catching Kakyoin with his chest and Polnareff with the pavement. Kakyoin still stunned from the rough landing, looked up at Jotaro's face, growing red when their eyes met. He quickly stood up, looking at his feet and dusting off his gakuran.
"Wow thanks, Jotaro, what a great friend you are. Nice to see you helped Kakyoin but not me." Polnareff began to stand, rubbing his now reddened nose, "But don't think I didn't see that, you'd better have something good if you don't want Mr Joestar and Avdol to know about that little incident."
"How does me not using Star Platinum on you sound? Huh, Polnareff?" The viscous edge to Jotaro's voice sent shivers down even Kakyoin's spine, and evidently it did the same to Polnareff, whose face went pale at the thought of being subjected to one of Star Platinum's attack rushes.
