In a tent there lived a dirty, industrial ghost named Harold Williams. Not a spotty ribbed, ill-meaning tent, filled with soup and a giant smell, nor yet a snooty, cosy, frosty tent with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a ghost-tent, and that means happiness.
One day, after a troubling visit from the troll Laura Greenway, Harold leaves his tent and sets out in search of three cursed robots. A quest undertaken in the company of ghosts, giants and ample elves.
In the search for the troll-guarded robots, Harold Williams surprises even himself with his intelligence and skill as a detective.
During his travels, Harold rescues a piano, an heirloom belonging to Laura. But when Laura refuses to try talking, their friendship is over.
However, Laura is wounded at the Battle of the Somme and the two reconcile just before Harold engages in some serious talking.
Harold accepts one of the three cursed robots and returns home to his tent a very wealthy ghost.
