He opened to doors, the warm and rich smell of freshly baked bread hitting his nose and making his lips curl upwards. His father was standing by the kitchen counter, skillfully kneading dough between his fingers, rolling its sides in the flour.
"Welcome back Noah. So. The usual?" The older male asked in his deep and gentle voice, not turning his face away from the work.
"Yup." The ginger answered with a sigh, plopping onto one of the chairs in the dining area. "They didn't listen to me at all and scurried back into the forest."
His father chuckled picking up the dough from the counter and walking up to the spacious table Noah was sitting at. There was a tray there, baking paper evenly cut and placed on top. He plopped the cake mass next to it, breaking off a piece and rolling it in his palm.
"Laura and Sam really seem to get on your nerves Noah." The older male said, this time looking into his son's eyes properly. Father was very similar to Noah when it came to his looks, he was tall and bulky in stature but gentle in his expression. His hair a blend between red and brown, cut short, the soft locks sticking to his scalp. The tall man's face (as well as his hands, neck, and shoulders) was littered in dark freckles that complemented his pale skin and milky green eyes.
The teenager sighed, taking a tiny piece of the dough and playing with it between his thumb and forefinger. "They don't just get on my nerves, they get on my entire being." Noah sighed making his father laugh out loud.
"And why is that?" The other male asked, still chuckling a little.
"Well... it's just-" the other stuttered, his eyebrows knitting in annoyance. "They are so...oblivious."
"I mean I guess they should be. They're children." The milky eyed male replied, rolling up the dough in his fingers and conjoining the long piece into a swirl.
"I know..." Noah's face twisted into a sour expression making his father stare at him for a few good seconds before it finally clicked for the older male.
"Oh, Noah my dear son." He sighed gracing the back of his hand against his son's cheek lovingly. "I know you feel alone in the whole responsibility of being a vampire hunter."
"That's not..." The ginger tried protesting but one look into his dad's eyes made him realize that he wouldn't get away with lying.
Father's hands moved back strands of hair from the boy's face. Noah closed his eyes, enjoying the warmth of the male's touch. His hands were always hard and run down by work but he didn't care, the contact was still the most calming thing on earth.
"Do not worry my sweet child. Your mother will make sure you'll be ready to take on that duty."
Noah frowned. "I...dont like training with mother..." He rolled the piece of dough in his palm, molding it back and forth. "She's...cold to me. I feel like I will never be as good as her at fighting."
The boy's father pushed one of the chairs next to his son and sat upon it. Wiping his hands against the apron resting around his hips the older male reached out and leaned the boys head on his chest. Hugging him close to his frame.
"Noah. I know her behavior may seem cold but trust me when I say that she cares deeply about you."
The ginger wiggled out of his dad's grasp, looking up at the male with a mix of confusion and anger. "How so?"
The father looked to the side. "That I cannot tell you..."
"So you're just going to leave me wondering? You know simply saying something without any evidence is not going to fix anything."
The taller male pressed his lips together in thought before sighing and folding his hands on his lap. "I suppose you're right. Noah, you know about the vampire hunter family tree don't you?"
