The Only Part

I've noticed it for months now. The way Sam looks at him, all there is is comfort in his eyes. It's the way I used to look at Lisa. She was my chance, my chance to be happy despite the way I grew up. Sam looks at him like he's his chance. Now, it's always been hard to read Cas, but I see it in him too. I'm closer to Cas than Sam is, and the amount of times Cas casually mentions his name in almost every conversation. 'What does Sam think?' 'How is Sam?' 'Speaking of Sam...' It's Cas' way of showing he's thinking of someone. It might seem normal to ask about a friend, but if we get to the end of a conversation and Sam has not been mentioned, Cas asks. I don't even think Cas knows how much he cares for him. They could be happy if they would just realize.

I walk into the kitchen where Sam is already awake, of course. I have no idea how he gets up so early. He slides a cup of coffee across the table to me. I take a sip with my eyes still barely opening.

"Hey, can I- can I talk to you about something later?" He seems all worried.

"Why don't we just talk now?" I make a confused face as I take another sip. I never knew you could actually see someone's heart drop to their ass, but that's what I just watched.

"Well... umm. What is I- would you- Would it be okay if... What if I-" By this point, I've figured out what he's trying to say.

"Would it be okay if you were into Cas?" Nope, nevermind, now his heart dropped to his ass.

"No that's not what I-"

"Come on dude..."

"Fine"

"You know I don't care about that kind of stuff. If he's going to make you happy, then go for it." I'm tired of watching them both suffer.

"How did... how did you know?" I'm not oblivious, that's how.

"The way you look at him. I know that look Sammy. It's how... It's how I used to look at Lisa. My chance at happiness. I want you both to have your shot at happiness."

"Thanks Dean."

"I mean, you never had the best luck with chicks, might as well give dudes a chance. Might not die on ya." I smirk and take another sip of my coffee. He actually smiles at my joke.

"Come on Dean." He shakes his head. Now for the fun part. Getting them together.

While I'm having a conversation with Cas, he once again brings up Sam. Now is my chance.

"Why do you always ask about Sam?" He does that stupid little head tildt he does when he's confused.

"Because he's my friend?" He doesn't seem too sure about his answer. That's a good sign.
"I don't think friends ask about friends that much, Cas."

"What's your point Dean?" It takes him a really long time to put things together. I thought angels were supposed to be geniuses or something.

"Do you think that maybe you want to know about him because you care about him as more than a friend?"

"Dean, you're already my best friend. You told me you can't have more than one best friend... did you lie to me Dean." I'm trying my best to be serious and help out my brother here, but he does not make it easy.

"No Cas... I mean like could you maybe want to have a relationship with him?" He looks around the room, seemingly thinking to himself.

"Well I suppose that's a possibility." He finally looks back at me. "Why do you ask?"

"You ask about him so much, I was just wondering if maybe you had feelings for him" He doesn't seem phased by the fact that I asked in the first place.

"Well, I never thought of it that way. Those are very complex human emotions that angels don't experience often. I guess Sam could have brought that out of me." Cas doesn't talk about anyone much, so the amount of times he's talked about Sam... he more than cares about him.

"Are you going to tell him?"

"I don't want to freak him out, I'll wait to see if he says anything first." The first time Cas doesn't just blurt out everything that's in his head has to be now? These guys don't make getting them together any easier. I can't just tell him what Sam said. And of course now is when I decide to have a moral compass and keep my brothers secret. Oh well, guess I'll just have to get them together some other way.

I feel like I'm trying to pass a message but I'm not allowed to say a single word on the page. Now I'm back in the kitchen talking to Sam. He has been acting a bit odd since he told me.
"Are you good Sammy?"

"I'm good. I've just never said what I told you earlier out loud before and now I can't stop thinking about it."

"Dude... why don't you just tell him?" He looks completely dumbfounded, like that though never had the possibility of even passing his mind.

"What if things get awkward?"

"Dude... it's Cas... he's always awkward." Correct me if I'm wrong but... I'm not.

"Yeah, but what if he doesn't want to be my friend anymore. What if he won't help us anymore." I give him the same "Really?" look I gave him when he thought batman could fly.

"Do you really think Cas would do that? I mean come on. I stabbed the guy within minutes of meeting him and he still stuck around after that."

"I can't just tell him, Dean. It takes a lot of building up courage, and planning."

"He's not some chick, Sam. It's Cas. He says big words but he's pretty damn simple if you ask me." Cas walks into the room and Sam practically runs into the fucking counter out of embarasment. I've watched Sam get flustered around him before, but man this is pathetic.

"Hey- umm, Hi, Hey Cas." Really? I've watched this for years now, and I don't know if I can take it much longer. If they keep this up, I might just have to put them in a closet and make them play 7 minutes in heaven.

"Hello Sam." Okay, now that's a smile I've never seen on Cas' face. It's good to see the depressed accountant smile for once. I think Sam realizes it too because he blushes. We sit there in awkward silence for a few seconds while they stare at each other.

"How are you?" That's the best he's got? It's amazing to me that he ever got a girlfriend, his flirting skills are sad.

"I'm good. I forgot why I came in here though."

"Oh, alright." Sam laughs back. Then Cas just leaves and then I give Sam a dumbfounded look and his smile soons fades.

"Really dude? 'How are you' Is the best you got? His face lit up when he saw you, and that's the best you could do?" He does his stupid little angry butthole mouth.

"I told you, I can't just do something about it."

"I said, his face lit up when he saw you, just take your damn chance." He takes a deep breath and then sighs. He quickly walks after Cas. He turns him around and just kisses him. That wasn't exactly what I expected, but at least it happened.

"Fucking finally!" They both turn and look at me, and then disappear. I don't want to know where, or why, but at least they're happy, and that's all that matters.
