I went home after dance feeling happy and sad at the same time. I was happy to have a duet. And I was happy that Kendall was a part of it since she's my best friend. But, I was sad too. I really didn't want to dance with Gino, or even see Gino. And I know that I have to see him now. And that I have to beat my best friend in order to dance. I mean, I wanna give Kendall this chance...but I can't. Not after Gino confessed that he liked her. It's not even that I like Gino. I don't. I just don't want Kendall to get hurt like I did.

"Maddie!" my mom yelled at me from downstairs.

"Yeah!" I yelled back. She didn't answer so I figured it wasn't anything.

"Maddie"

It was Gino. What the heck was he doing here! Why would he come to my house at 8:00 at night. Not to mention I looked totally disgusting. My hair was tied back into some disgusting pony tail and I was wearing a huge, baggy tshirt and pink soffee shorts. And he actually looked okay.

"Um" He was still standing in the doorway with the door half open. I sat in my chair by my nightstand half applying makeup remover to my face when he showed up. I held a blank stare at him for a good 10 seconds.

"Uh, Gino ya gonna open the door" Kendall pushed the door open walking past Gino widening her eyes at me.

I fixated my eyes away from Gino and looked back at Kendall who plopped on to my bed effortlessly.

"Why are you guys here?" I asked looking back in forth at the two. Gino now awkwardly stood a few steps into my room.

"Abby wants us to rehearse" they both said at the same time.

"If you ask me though she just wants us to, you know, spend some quality time together," Kendall said while lounging on my bed in her black yoga pants and cut steelers tshirt.

"Well, I don't know why she told you guys to come here. I'm not the one with the dance studio in my basement."

"Please, you can hardly call the wood floor and mirrors in my basement a dance studio. Jill set that up for me when I was two and could still do an arial in there without knocking myself out."

Me and Gino laughed.

"We really can't do much in here," Gino stated the obvious.

"Well, I'm totally cool with not doing much," said Kendall laying on her back comfortably while scrolling through her instagram feed.

"Since there's nothing we can do..." I started

"Abby can't get mad at us." Kendall finished my sentence smiling over at me.

"I guess" Gino said now walking further into my room.

I'm not sure if anyone else felt the awkward silence that lasted for about a second. I still kind of just sat in my chair by my nightstand turned around facing them. While Kendall was still on the bed but texting someone not on instagram anymore. And Gino was just walking around my room, looking at my stuff.

Kendall must have felt the awkard silence too because she looked up from her phone and over at me. We both shared that same confused/weird look only we understood. A look we shot at each other a lot when the moms were fighting and we were just standing there or when Abby was yelling at someone in public. It was a "this is awkward but we can't do anything about it" look.

"I'm gonna go to the bathroom" Kendall just blurted out without warning. I now gave her a "what the heck why are you leaving me in this awkwardness alone" look. But she just smiled and shrugged, hopping off the bed sloppily and then closing the shut door behind her.

I couldn't figure out if Kendall thought I liked Gino or something. Maybe she thought I did because she smiled all weirdly when she left and she obviously didn't actually have to pee. Or maybe she just got bored and wanted to leave the room for a sec, or maybe she was just smiling because Kendall is always just smiling. Even if we were best friends I couldn't really tell. But either way I was now stuck here alone again with the one person I did not want to be alone with. Thank gosh he hadn't turned around from my wall of trophies and was still taking a really, really long time to examine each one. But I knew his silence could only last so long.

He turned around holding up my smallest trophy, one I won a long time ago. "Why do you still have this?" he asked.

I moved around in my chair before answering, "I don't know I guess I just like it"

"Well, there has to be a reason why you would keep a" he tilted the small object so he could read the writing on the silver plate better, "a junior 2nd overall, by all of these huge 1st place trophies."

"I don't- I don't know" I said getting annoyed at why he cared so much about a stupid trophy on my shelf.

Kendall walked in before he could ask again. He put the trophy back in it's place and leaned his hands on the shelf looking towards Kendall.

"So while I was out going to the bathroom...I ran into your mom"

"Ew what'd she do" I answered.

"Nothing she just suggested we go downstairs and watch tv or something"

"I guess that's better than just sitting here all night" Gino popped into the conversation.

All night I thought to myself. Why would he say all night cause he was not staying all night.

We made our way down into my basement which was really just a tiny room with a tv and a couch. If it was just me and Kendall we would lay on the couch on opposite ends each taking up half a sliver of the couch. By the end of the night the person on the end, usually me, would have fallen at least 10 times. We probably shouldn't have squeezed two people laying down on a couch, clearly made for two adults to sit, relax on their own private cushion, and enjoy some tv. I had no idea how all three of us were going to fit, even if we just sat upright we'd still be touching.

Kendall took the first seat on the couch all the way to the right. Gino sat next to her but not too close. It wasn't until I tried to sit down that it was made clear the couch was a little too small for all three of us. But instead of being a gentleman of course, Gino slid over about 1/2 of an inch leaving me no room whatsoever. Somehow I managed to sit down without making any contact with him. I did not want any part of me to have to even brush by any part of him. Kendall on the other hand didn't seem to mind at all. I looked over and could see she was sitting with her legs scrunched up while her back leaned comfortably on the arm rest of the couch, her knees touching Gino's arm. While I tried to make my entire body into a skinny little stiff rod and made sure to keep that 1/2 inch between me and him. I reached over him carefully and grabbed the remote. Flipping through the channels until I found something decent.

"Hey hey look" Kendall pointed to the screen, "Dance Moms is on, hah"

I clicked it on. At first I didn't recognize the episode but then I did. It was still so strange to see myself on tv. It was amazing how different tv made everything seem too.

After a half hour I gave in.

I felt myself slowly drift closer and closer to Gino. But only because my body was so tired of holding itself up. Dance put enough strain on my muscles and it's not like Gino had a contagious disease. It seemed like he hadn't noticed so I didn't worry. After a few minutes Kendall went home because apparently Jill wanted her to get some sleep for once so she wasn't yawning all through rehearsal. Gino had texted his dad to come pick him up. Even after Kendall left, he didn't move over. I still had my arm pressed to his leaning on him ever so slightly.

"The awards are my least favorite part" he said when we reached that part in the episode we were still watching.

"They're my favorite" I said.

"Of course they are, you always win" he said and he must have smiled because I felt his head move a little.

The announcer was now calling out the winners. First place: It wasn't me.

"Second place entry number 903 Disappear"

"I don't always win" I said to Gino. "That's why I like that little trophy. It reminds me that in the midst of everything I'm not as perfect as everyone thinks...
