I was quick to round the corner as police officers chased me through the streets of New York. I passed countless people who all looked at me strangely before running into a Newsie, who caught me from falling to the ground.
"Where's a pretty girl like you goin' in such a rush?" He asked.
I quickly looked over my shoulder. "Just run!" I said to him. He saw the police, then saw a man named Snyder who ran a thing called the refuge, a hail for underage kids.
"Oh shit!" He mumbled. He grabbed my hand and pulled me through the crowd. I ran a little ways behind him as he was taller than me, and was much faster than me. He pulled me through a door and ran down a staircase where a woman stood at the bottom. "Snyder!" He said breathlessly to her.
She pointed to a giant painting that was pressed close to the wall. "Hide back there Jack, hurry!" She said quickly.
Three police officers came rushing in the door, and down the staircase to her. "Ms. Medda.." Snyder hissed. "We're looking for a young girl and a fugitive. They ran in here have you seen them?"
She laughed, "Now Snyder," She began. She was a great actor. "You know no children allowed in the theater!"
The two had a conversation for god knows how long while me and the Newsie were hidden behind the painting. Finally Snyder and the police officers left the room, and the boy and I crawled out from behind the painting. "Now what on earth have you done?" Asked the sweet woman to me.
I looked down at the ground. "I escaped."
"The refuge?" The boy asked.
"The orphanage. It was horrible in there! They didn't feed us anything for weeks!" I said looking up to the woman and the boy. "My name is (Y/n), (Y/n) (L/n). Thank you for helping me, but I don't want to be a bother to anyone else, so I'll be leaving."
"Woah," The boy said standing in front of me so I couldn't go back to the door. "How old are you?" He asked.
I looked at him skeptically. "I'm sixteen. What about you..." I trailed off, not knowing his name.
"Jack Kelly," He stuck out his hand, he had a charming smile, and dirty hands. "I'm seventeen."
Slowly I took his hand, and shook it. His eyes were green and shined with mischief. He also wore a happy smile on his face. He wore a blue shirt, with a vest on top of it. His hand were rough, but gentle.
A little two late I realized I had been holding onto his hand for a while.
"Uh," His voice cut into my thoughts, his face was flushed with a pinkish tint, and I smiled gratefully at him.
"Yes, well, thank you Mr. Kelly for helping me, but I don't want to trouble you."
The woman looked at me, and smiled. "Ms. (Y/n) you must be starving," Her voice was like honey. When she mentioned it I realized I was pretty hungry.
"Oh yes ma'am, I am, but honestly I'd be too much of a bother!" I said to her happily.
"Oh honey, it's no bother at all! Jack, I need you to paint me another one of these back drops while I get this little girl some food!" She said to Jack.
I looked at him, and then at the painting. It was beautiful. It had mountains and a river, and the most beautiful forest. "You painted this?" I asked in awe.
He put his hand behind his neck. The woman smiled at me. "Oh yes he did, This here is a very talented young man!"
"Alright Ms. Medda! That's enough, I ain't that talented!" His face was even more pink than before.
"That's more than talent," I said quietly, "it's brilliance!"
He smiled. "Go get some food." His voice was quiet, and very happy.
Ms. Medda smiled at him, and wrapped her arm with mine, and we walked outside. "Don't worry dear, he's always like that, although..." she trailed off.
I looked up at her, and watched a she thought.
She laughed, and shook her head. We walked to a dinner and ate. That was the biggest meal I had eaten in three years.
