CHAPTER 3

Adam!

He kneels down in front of me, gently undoing the gag.

“Adam, help me!” I beg, the moment my mouth is free.

He studies me for a moment.

“Of course I’ll help you, Claire,” he says. “You’re my friend.”

I breathe out a sigh of relief.

Wait.

Why is he here?

“Adam…why are you here? What’s going on?” I ask, my voice quivering.

There’s something not right here.

The huge guy, who must be Marcus, is the one who caught me. He tied me up. And here stands Adam, emerging out of the car Marcus was obviously waiting for.

He’s helping them, isn’t he?

“I’ll explain everything,” he says, straightening up. “But first, you need to do something for me.”

Apprehension grips at me.

“What do you need me to do?” I ask in a small voice.

He just smiles at me. “You see, if it was up to me, I would let you go. But my friends over here aren’t inclined to do so,” he begins.

I glance up at the huge guy who caught me. Marcus.

On my other side stands the other huge guy who also tackled Smith to the ground.

I can’t fight of the three of them!

            “I don’t understand,” I whisper.

Adam begins pacing before me.

“Are you hurt, Claire?” he asks instead. “Did Marcus hurt you?”

He flicks a pointed glance over at Marcus.

It sure looks like Adam is in charge here.

“I’m okay,” I whisper. “Can you let me go, please?”

He shakes his head. “Like I said, I need something from you first.”

            “What do you need?”
