Don't stand next to a tree during a storm.
I grumbled that in the pouring rain while I remembered how I was sitting all dry in MY house just an hour ago. My friends forgot me! On my own birthday too!
"Hazel!" My best friend Noelle called in her sing song voice. "It's your turn for truth or dare!"
"Um...Dare."
"We dare you to stand next to a tree in the park for five minutes. We'll help you if anything happens."
"Easy."
My friends walked me to the park and chose the biggest tree that no one has ever dared to climb, for me to stand next to.
"Hey, Mason! Set a timer for five minutes!" Caitlin called.
"Okay!"
"Alright Hazel, we'll come back when the times over to pick you up. See ya!"
Apparently, it was all part of the plan for them to leave me here in the rain. I had remembered something I was told when I was younger, by my fifth grade teacher, "Be safe children. The only time a thunderstorm like this can hurt you is if you stand next to a tree, a lampost, or something skinny and taller than most things. The lightning is 'attracted' to these things and is most likely to hit them. If you're right next to it or touching it the electrical current will carry to you and electricute you."
I was scared, and just as I started to walk away from the tree, a menacing crack of thunder sparked as a bolt of lightning rang and struck down on the tree. I tried to run but I couldn't and all I felt was pain.
Sorry for the short first chapter, then again, it wasn't a first chapter but a prologue, so...Prologues are usually short, right? Thank you for reading this and vote if you like it and comment if there are any mistakes, or for whatever reason. Please no hate comments. Hope you like it so far.
