I woke up at noon the next morning. When I checked my phone, I had 27 texts, 9 missed calls, and 5 voicemail. 25 of the texts were from Jake. When I listened to the voicemails he left, they were all stupid things that made me laugh, like, “Hello? Hello? Is there anyone there? ADDI WAKE UP!” and “Hi my mommy just left my house and I am home alone and I am scared please help me.” Jeez, Jake is crazy. I decided to call him back. “Yellow!” he said when he picked up. “Orange!” I replied. Then we went on and on naming as many different colors as we could. Why are we such idiots? We finally agreed on him coming over after he showers.

I hung up the phone and went downstairs to eat breakfast. My mom had taken AJ to one of his annoying friend’s house, so I got the house to myself for a little bit. I grabbed a bowl of Lucky Charms and sat on the couch. When I turned the TV on, Austin and Ally, from Disney Channel, was on, so I just left it. Halfway through the show, someone grabbed my shoulder and I nearly spilled my cereal, but luckily I looked back before I did. It was Jake. Somehow he came in without me noticing. He plopped himself down on the couch and took one of my marshmallows. “So how’d you sleep?” he asked. “Meh.” I answered. We then watched the rest of Austin and Ally in silence.

After I jumped in the shower, I ran to my bedroom and put on a bra and underwear. Jake and I were supposed to go to the mall and pick out a dress for homecoming. He finally convinced me to go (with a little help from Rachel). I quickly put on a pair of old jeans, a baggy tee, and a hoodie threw my hair in a messy bun, and we ran out the door. I jumped in Jake’s truck, and soon we were on our way to the mall. It only took us 5 minutes, but it was long enough to listen to my favorite song, Show You Off, by Dan + Shay.

We walked into the mall and I had no idea where I wanted to go. I glanced at Jake, and he seemed to know exactly where to go. I guess all his time hanging out with his girlfriends paid off. He took me to a few stores, and I couldn’t find anything. Eventually we made our way to DEB, and he decided he wanted to pick out dresses for me. He wanted me to have something short and simple. I didn’t exactly know what I wanted, so I just let him do his own thing. He ended up picking out 4 dresses. I went into the dressing room to try them on. All of them were gross and ugly. I just can’t pull off a dress. I’m built like a twelve year old girl that hasn’t hit puberty yet.

I decided to give up. It wasn’t worth it. I didn’t really care anymore. Jake was a little more hesitant on giving up, but he eventually did. We went to Subway and we got a foot long to share. “I can’t believe you gave up so easily.” He said. “I had a feeling we were getting close the right one.” I looked at him. “The right one?” I asked. “Yeah you know the one that makes you look amazing, makes all the guys fall for you, and gets you a boyfriend. That one.” I stared at him for a minute. “You thought we were close to the ‘right one’? That sounds ridiculous.” He laughed and then looked over my shoulder. Then nodded his head to me and I looked behind me. It was Shelby, the most popular girl in school. Jake had been trying to get with her since the seventh grade, and somehow he still hasn’t had any luck. Shelby was with a few of her friends. Her perfect long brown hair was up in a slick ponytail, and she was wearing skinny jeans, black combat boots, and a tight blue shirt that showed off every curve in her body. Jake tried not to look at her, but I could tell he wanted to go say something. “Just go do it!” I whispered. “Yeah, but what about Abby?” he asked. “How long is it going to last between you two? I’m sure it’ll end by Monday. If you talk to Shelby now, maybe she will think about going to Homecoming with you!” He contemplated it for a minute, then winked at me and stood up.

Let’s just say that Shelby isn’t interested in Jake. I watched him walk over to her, saw them talk for a minute. Shelby’s friends were obviously ready to get with Jake at any moment, but Shelby looked at him in disgust. Next thing I know, Jake is walking over with a plate of nachos on his chest, his face red. “Let’s get out of here.” He said without even looking at me. I felt really bad for him, but I knew he would get over it eventually. He was tough, and he also had so many other girls just waiting in line to get with him.

When we got to my house, we went to my room. Jake hadn’t said anything since the incident with Shelby, and I thought he might throw something. He still had the nachos on his shirt, so I told him I thought he should go home. He nodded, kissed my head, and left, leaving me in my room, the house silent enough for me to hear my heart beating. Through our many years together, I have never seen Jake look so disappointed, and it devastated me.
