"In a land, far away from here, there once lived a man. But this man was no ordinary man. He was a doctor." Frank said. "The allied forces had ordered him to operate on soldiers to make them more powerful. He agreed and started work the next day.

"After countless hours of research, the doctor found a way to make it work. He operated on a few animal subjects and waited for the results. After a couple weeks, they developed more muscles and bone than before, making them stronger. However, they appeared to have been starved even after being given more food than what most people eat! Eventually, all of them died, or did they?

"The doctor noticed a few of them were still alive and decided to take some blood samples and research them a little bit more. He found out that their blood was different than before and that they had lost a significant portion of their brain. This led them to having less functionality in their brain and also leaving them with one main desire, to eat.

"The doctor decided that it was too dangerous to operate on people and ended his research. However, some say that the doctor operated on the people, even though he wasn't supposed to...then they ALL TURNED TO ZOMBIES!! ARGHHH!"

"Frank, stop! You're scaring Matthew!" Sandra yelled back. "He's only 11 years old!"

"Fine, fine. I'll stop. It's just a story, you know?"

"I know, but still. It's scary, especially knowing that the war is still going on right now. It's not funny."

"I'm sorry. I won't do it again...yet."

"FRANK!"

"Okay, okay. I won't."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

The sky was turning from a vibrant blue to a deep red. The summer breeze gently brushes against the trees and grass with a slight chill, indicating the beginning of fall.

"Do you think school will be the same, Frank?"

"Other than the excessive amount of bomb drills and ya know the increase of the teachers recommending we take gym class, I think so. Are you worried about school being cancelled or something?"

"No, I'm just thinking. What would happen if something did happen? Like, what if the country fell apart and became a wasteland? What would we do then?"

"Sandra, this is completely insane! None of this will happen. The country has plenty of forces to keep the enemies from attacking us. We'll be fine. Tell me you won't worry about this again, please?"

"I know, but-"

"Please?"

"Oh alright. I won't think about this again as long as you keep your promise of no more scary stories."

"Fine. It's getting a little late for me, I better head back to my place. My momma's gonna beat my ass for being out too late."

"Language! My brother's still here!"

"My bad, sorry."

"Ugh. I don't know why you're still living with your parents. You should be moved out by now with a stable job."

"I know, but it won't be for much longer though. I'm heading off to college this fall. Besides you know how my mom is."

"Wait, why didn't you tell me this before? We're best friends! I should know about this! How come you waited so long to tell me?"

"Well, I, um-"

"You what? Forgot?"

"Yes."

"How do you forget about something like this? I swear, you forget some of the weirdest things sometimes. I still never understood how you forgot your pants that one time during school. How does someone forget to wear pants? It's the most basic necessity."

"You should know me man, I ain't no basic white bitch. I'm black." Sandra glared at him and raised her hand as a warning for an incoming smack. Naturally, Frank flinched away before she had the opportunity to. "Get the boy some ear plugs if you're so concerned over him hearing my mouth, jeez."

"You should probably get going to your momma now. I wouldn't want her wrath on anyone, not even you."

"Wow, I feel so appreciated."

"Naturally."

"Aight. I guess I'll see you sometime this week again?"

"Yeah, just stop by anytime. I'm not doing anything, but just make sure to knock next time so my parents don't try to shoot you again."

"Hey now that was funny, you can't tell me seeing your dad scream like a little girl and run up the stairs while your mom, as silent as a mouse, got ahold of the gun before he did and shot someone."

"Yeah...Good thing you're alright, though. My parents are a handful sometimes...all the time. You better go though, seriously dude. It's getting dark fast."

"Alright. I'll make sure to knock next time. Catch you later!" Frank waves goodbye, and heads back home.

"Yeah, you too."

Sandra hasn't felt like this in a while. Being around him really makes her feel nervous, but happy.

"HEY SANDRA! WAS THAT YOUR BOYFRIEND?!"

"AH! Don't scare me like that! And no, he's not my boyfriend! He's just my boy...friend..." Sandra explains, her face as red as a cherry.

"I knew it! My little girl has a love interest! I had a feeling when you asked if he could come over these past few weeks, but now I know."

"DAD! He's just a friend! Nothing else!"

"Okay, I understand. Can you help your mom clean the rest of dinner up, please? She's getting older now and it's harder for her to do some of the things she used to do. It would mean a lot to her."

"Yeah, I guess. But this just means I get to make fun of you and mom for being old now."

"Fine."
