"Would someone please explain to me why our group had to be the ones stuck with the two most idiotic blockheads in the troop?!" Jean Kirstein, tall, lanky, and long-faced, complained in his iconic manner.
"Ah, c'mon Jean, how can you complain about having Kagami? We're sure to be the first group to finish the course." Connie Springer reminded his friend.
Connie was correct in thinking so. Of the two blockheads that Jean referred to, Kagami Taiga was the superior. In fact, he was probably superior to everyone, in everything pardoning logical reasoning. Already standing at 6'1 as a 14 year old boy, with no sign of stopped growth, and an incredible physique to match, he was perfectly suited for the job of titan slashing. In only one category did Eren Jaeger, blockhead no. 2, match Kagami, and that was in spirit and thickheadedness.
"He's probably just taking out his jealousy on them, Connie." Sasha Braus teased before engaging her 3D maneuver gear and flying quickly out of Jean's grasp.
"Yeah, sorry, Jean, not all of us can be as depressed and stuck up as you are." Eren Jaeger taunted.
"They weren't referring to you, idiot. Kagami is the only one with anything to be jealous of." Jean shot back.
The subject of their conversation stood with his back to the rest of the group, a few branches ahead in the dense forest used for titan-slashing practice, where they waited high in the trees for the last members of their group to catch up. He crouched his back like a cat waiting to pounce, his slanted eyes flashing.
"Where's Armin and Reiner?" He turned and hissed to those waiting behind him. "I sense the titans. We have to attack soon."
"They're fake, idiot. And Armin got caught up in some branches and Reiner stayed behind to help him untangle; they should be here any second now." Eren informed the over-serious boy. For Eren to think someone else is over-serious... it must be true.
"We got here plenty fast anyway, since you always push us so much. We even got here before Annie and Mikasa's group, an astounding feat, but that's the reason Armin got all tangled up. You can take a down a notch, you know, Kagami." Jean called out a bit condescendingly. Kagami, however, turned around with such fierceness and fervor that Jean stepped back and almost fell off his branch.
Sasha flew up to where the group was perched a few moments later. "Armin and Reiner are right behind me; we can begin soon." She informed her comrades.
"Finally." Kagami muttered. Connie rolled his eyes.
Armin and Reiner zipped up to the group shortly after.
"Sorry! I'm so sorry!" Armin earnestly apologized to everyone, especially Kagami, as he was the one Armin was most afraid of.
"Don't beat yourself up so much, Armin. You did fine." Reiner warmly assured his friend, placing a friendly hand on Armin's shoulder.
Upon their arrival, Kagami rose to full height.
"That guy never ceases to amaze me." Sasha whispered to Connie, gazing toward his tall, tan, muscular figure.
"Yeah, whatever." Connie muttered. The girl members of the training cadets most definitely seemed to take a liking to Kagami more than the guys.
"Alright." Kagami called out, turning toward the rest of the group. "Connie, Sasha, Jean, handle any titans to the left. Reiner, Eren, Armin, you take the right. I'll take everything down the center. If I finish before you all I'll come back and slash the ones in your areas."
"HUHHHHHH?" Jean and Eren both burst out in unison. "In what way does that plan make ANY sense?!" Eren finished.
"I'm sorry, last time I checked, I'm by far the strongest one here." Kagami's tiger eyes squinted. "It'd be best for the second-rates to follow along nicely."
Jean and Eren looked like they were about to explode. If there was one thing they were united on, it was a hatred of Kagami Taiga. They could've kept going, but pleading looks from the others told them not to start a brawl in the middle of training, and both boys begrudgingly submitted.

"I'LL KILL HIM! I'M GONNA KILL
KAGAMI!" Jean cried before flopping himself down onto his bunk.
Eren snickered. "Good luck with that. If you find a way, let me know."
During training, Kagami had kept his promise. He killed every faux titan in his self-assigned path, and had time to spare to help Armin slash a few. The only other cadet that came within range of his kills was Mikasa.
"How does someone like that even exist? At least Mikasa is hot, even if she's stronger than me. Kagami is just a major jerk! Where did he even come from?? Why is he here??"
"Stop rambling, Jean, dinner's ready. Let's go." Connie said, patting his bedraggled friend on the back.
In the dining hall, of course, the only open table was the one where Kagami sat. Anyone who didn't know him very well steered as clear of him as possible.
"Oh, of COURSE." Jean began.
"It's because you wouldn't stop talking! Whatever, let's just go eat, I'm starving." Eren stopped him, leading the way to the food.
The boys sat a few seats down from their groupmate and began to eat in silence, when suddenly Connie rose and moved a few seats closer to Kagami.
"Oi, what're you doing-" Jean hissed.
"Hey, Kagami." Connie said
Kagami looked up fiercely from his food. "Hm? What?"
"We were talking about something earlier, and I realized we really didn't know the answer. Sasha and I are here to prove ourselves to our families, Jean is here to live a life of luxury, Reiner and Bertholdt to protect their village. Oh, and Eren to kill every titan. But why are you here? You've never talked about it before."
Jean and Eren stared from Connie to Kagami, nervous but exceedingly curious.
Kagami sat still, his face in thoughtful silence; the clatter of the dining hall rose in volume as the seconds ticked by. Reiner and Bertholdt eventually came and sat down with them, but any form of conversation was hushed by Jean and Eren as they waited for the response.
Kagami suddenly sat up straight. All eyes at at the table turned toward him, expecting some deep and dramatic response like Eren's tragic story or Armin's dreams.
"To see if I really am the strongest." He stated with a serious face, and turned back to ravaging his dinner.
"What kinda lame ass answer is that?!" Jean cried, banging his fist on the wooden table.
"Yeah, Kagami, would you mind... going into a bit more detail?" Connie hesitatingly suggested.
"Y'know, regarding where you come from..." Eren thoughtfully began. "You do have the weird eyebrow thing going on for you, which is pretty common here, but I've always thought you looked like Mikasa. Your eyes, at least. Could you tell us your whole story...?" A memory of being interrogated by his comrades in the very same dining hall flashed through his mind. "If you don't mind." He added.
"Mind? No, why would I mind?" Kagami ripped off a tough piece of bread with his teeth. "If you guys care so much, I guess I'll tell you."
