Playing House

I pulled his arm closer. For a moment, it seemed like Lucas' arm flinched at my touch, but I didn't care and tugged him towards me. And because he didn't resist, I was able to have him lay down next to me on the bed.

"Look at this."

I waved my hand to turn off all the lights Lucas had lit. As the saying goes, "even a dog can recite a poem if it spends three years at a village school." It has been three years since I started using magic, and now I can do this much even with my eyes closed.

As soon as I pulled my mana, a glittering crest spread out on the ceiling. It was the magic circle I drew in the air earlier. I was bored just before I went to bed yesterday so I studied some spells. I tried pulling my mana thinly, like a thread, then drew it in the air. It sparkled like the Milky Way.

Ah, I feel at ease

Ah, I feel at ease. It reminded me of the time when I used to lie on my back and look at the night sky.

"Don't the magic circles look like constellations?"

"You seem to be having fun studying them these days."

However, even after seeing that beautiful sight, Lucas just gave a soulless response. I couldn't help be shocked by his insensibility.

"Isn't it pretty? I just discovered it yesterday! You were the first one I showed it to."

"Yeah right, it's pretty, preeettty."

"Oh, you just sighed, didn't you? You think I'm pathetic?"

"Rather than that..."

Lucas somehow spoke to himself in a slightly regretful tone. The soft light of the ceiling shaded his face, unexpectedly abashed. I was surprised.

"I'm starting to question why I'm playing house with you right now."

"What, playing house?"

"Yes, playing house."

It was only a second when I blinked. His voice as he whispered, became lower and thicker than before, and the boy beside me became a man. I could see his crimson eyes staring down at me in silence.
