"Great. I'll start. My name is Mrs. Brown, my favorite color is blue, and I have a pet dog named Benny." She said. There was some chatter before the next person shared. It went on for quite a while. You hadn't been paying much attention until it got to the person next to you.
"My name is B-B-B-B-Billy, my fav-favorite color is r-ed, and I have- I have- a st-stutter." He said. Everyone began to laugh and imitate him. He stared down at his lap and you couldn't help but feel angry at everyone for laughing at him. The teacher quieted them after a minute and motioned for you to continue sharing.
"My name is (Y/n), my favorite color is (f/c), and I think all of you are jerks for laughing at Bill's stutter." You said and crossed your arms. There were several glances that went around before the teacher smiled.
"That's very nice of you to say (Y/n), but please use friendlier language." She said. You nodded and noticed that she wasn't the only one smiling. Bill had a huge grin on his face and he was staring at you.
"D-Do you want to ha-hang during free-time?" He whispered. You smiled and nodded.

The memory always made you happy. You had loved Bill even when you didn't know what love was. You couldn't help it. Bill was always by your side, yet it wasn't a surprise when you had become distant in the 3rd grade.

"Bill, you don't even like theater!" You exclaimed with a laugh as he stood in line, waiting to audition. He shrugged.
"W-W-Well, I wanted to be in the l-lead with you." He replied. You smiled. Bill was always willing to do anything for you, even if it was something he wouldn't normally do.
"Thanks, Billy." You said. He smiled. The line slowly began to get shorter and it was now a girl named Beverly's turn. She was also auditioning for the lead female role. She was good. You bit your lip after she finished. It wasn't difficult to tell that you wouldn't get the role. It had flowed with Beverly a lot more than it had flowed with you.
The next day came and your teacher told the class who got the roles. Your name wasn't on that list. It didn't faze you that much. You didn't expect to get it anyways. Yet still, Bill told you he would willingly quit his part just because you didn't get the other lead, stating that he only wanted to do it because you were doing it.
"Bill, it's fine. You're obviously good at acting. You should do it anyways." You said. He sighed.
"But (Y/n)-"
"No Bill, you're doing it and that's final!" You interrupted.

Looking back now, you really wished you hadn't made him do that stupid play.
>> flashback <<
The play was today. It was a little after school and quite a few people had shown up. An hour in and Bill was exceptional. You also had to admit, Beverly was doing amazing. The spotlight shined on the two now. Everything was quiet. They were talking, but the words didn't seem to reach your ears as you watched the two lean in.
When their lips met, a weird feeling washed over you. You felt like you wanted to scream and cry at the same time. Your heart rose to your throat and dropped to your feet, then shattered completely. Tears began to sting at your eyes, blurring your vision. You felt like you were going to throw up. Why? You didn't know. Not at the time anyway. You couldn't breathe. You needed to get away.
You never knew what happened at the end of the play. You never asked either. You stopped talking to Bill completely. He often tried to talk you though, asking you what was wrong, what he did, but you always pushed him away. After a week of this, he stopped trying and you were glad. You wanted so bad for him to be your best friend again, but after realizing how much you loved him on a non best friend level, that couldn't be possible. So, from that day on, the memory stayed in your brain and burned in your heart.

You looked down at your plate, the sad memories filling your head. Your throat became dry and you stood up to get a drink from the water fountain. You pushed the button but no water came out. You groaned and lightly kicked the wall. Stupid cheap school. The next closest water fountain was in the hallway. You walked out of the cafeteria as people began to pile in. Your shoes made a soft echo in the quiet hallway. You reached the fountain and lent over, smiling as the cold water ran down your throat.
"H-Hey (Y/n)." You heard a familiar voice say. You stood and turned around, wiping the remaining water from your mouth. Bill was standing behind you. You swallowed, feeling your throat dry up all over again.
"Hey, Bill." You replied awkwardly. You both stared at each other for a while before he cleared his throat.
"So I w-was wondering if I co-c-could ask you something." He said. You looked at your shoes before shrugging.
"Go for it." You said and leaned against the wall. You could see him swallow.
"Well I- there's this p-person and I-I um... I was just t-t-thinking of the best way to ask them out. Do you uh... H-Have any ideas?" He asked. You felt the third-grade feelings come rushing back. Beverly. He wanted to know the best way to ask Beverly out. You looked at the fountain next to you.
"I guess just... Be straightforward." You replied. You gave him the simplest answer you could, knowing that if you talked for too long your voice would reveal how you really felt.
"Oh... Well... I wa-wanted to know... M-maybe..." You rolled your eyes. Sometimes Bill's stutter made things a lot worse.
"Listen, Bill, I promised I would help my teacher set up before class. I gotta go." You replied. He raised his eyebrows as you turned around.
"W-Wait! (Y/n), I really need to... I wan-wanted... Can you pl-please just..." He groaned loudly and you fought back the urge to turn around. After you were about five feet away from him he began to panic. He was stuttering incoherently and trying desperately to get you to turn back again. Finally, he did the only thing he could think of. You felt him reach out and grab your arm. He spun you around (not very) smoothly and pulled you close to him. He captured your lips in a sweet and unprepared kiss. However, you couldn't care less. You were leaning against him and felt his soft hands adjust your position. He pulled away and stared at you, his eyes sparkling.
"I w-was trying to ask you if you m-m-might want to go to the ice cream parlor after sc-school." He said. You laughed.
"Yes, Bill. I would love that."
