Meet the women at the heart of the story.
On the left, you see Aiyana Cassidy - sorry, DOCTOR Aiyana Cassidy - is a brilliant physicist. She's from the Northern Imperium, went to school at MIT where she got a Master's in Quantum Mechanics and a PhD in Optical Engineering before she was 25. She was hired right out of college and put in charge of Optics R&D for Heavy Lift Corporation, based in Houston, Republic of Texas. Kendra Foster-Briggs, She was Aiyana's best friend in high school, but when Aiyana went East for college, Kendra went West to get into movies (called sensies). When she semi-retired, she moved to Los Alamos, where she ran into Aiyana again. In a very short time, they were living together, planning a life, and preparing to marry. Kendra has some secrets, though; her past isn't a clear-cut as it may seem. But she put it all behind her to be with Aiyana.
