"Hold on a second", my Mother said quietly. Her warm hands gently placed over my eyes. She adjusted something on top my head that I couldn't make out. She finally lifted her hands of my eyelids and screamed "Surprise!" I slowly opened my eyes to see a big, red satin bow fixed in my hair. I stared at the glass mirror in front of me, not knowing how to react. "Whaddya think?" My mom asked, squeezing my shoulders.
"I...I love it." I whispered.
That little gift inspired my nine-year-old self to get me something special for my twelfth birthday. Some girls like makeup, others want a dress, but I wanted this little box of purple star fairy lights I saw on Amazon for $12.00, and so I got them. They've been in my room ever since and I've been replacing the battery yearly."A staple to the Kassandro household", my Father always said. I always wondered why I loved them so much. It's been four years and you'd probably think I'd lose some attachment to those lights at some point. But weirdly, I never did.
Now I know why.
