Chapter One:

I was in the front seat of Dad's old pick-up truck. BIG MISTAKE. I turned thirteen the day before, and Dad had promised to teach me to drive for the first time. Well, once he back from war, of course. Now this was my chance. I knew all the basics. Rear-view mirror check, Seat-belt buckled, etc. I was starting to get really nervous, since this was my first time to drive in all. I grabbed the stick shift and put it in drive. My foot shook at it pressed down on the pedal. It was so overwhelming, I hit the pedal twice, making my Dad's head smack back on the seat.

"Oww...."

"OH MY GOSH... I'm SO Sorry Daddy..." He put his hand on the back of his head. Immediately, I felt guilty.

"Its fine, Sweetie." I turned my head back to the road in front of us. My hands were sweating like a donkey. Wiping them on my shorts, I took the wheel in my hands again, and this time, I gently pushed down on the pedal. I was going a slow pace. Staying directly in between the two sides of the road. My dad sighed, relieved.

"DAD!" I shouted.

"What?" Dad was acting all innocent. Like God had put a halo above his head.

"Am I really that bad...?" I mumbled, more to myself than Dad.

"Nah. Not that bad." I pushed my Dad's shoulder, with one eye still on the dirt road. That one second. Only that one second, did I take one hand on the wheel, the car swerved to the right. Being out in the country, there were so many trees on the sides on the road. We were heading directly for a huge tree. The tree where me and my dad usually spent our afternoons when I was little. Sitting under the tree's shade, drinking Mom's lemonade. My five year old brother, wasn't even born yet. We had built a tree house up in the tree. All these memories passed across my mind as my life flashed before my eyes. We hit the tree with a force strong enough to smack my head against the window. I grabbed my head with my bloody hand. Turning to check on Dad, I screamed. His face was covered in blood. His eyes barley opened for a second to say, "Mackenzie..." A tear escaped my eye as I scramble for my phone. I dialed 911, my fingers sliding all over, layering my phone in blood also. This was a nightmare.
