Chapter 1 | Kicked out
It was a little after dawn and the sun, still slowly peaking over dark skyscrapers, lit the morning sky with it's light blue hue. At this time in the morning, Charles was awake. He was sitting at the dining table in his cold kitchen, that was slowly lit by the light coming from his apartment's glass wall.
He was drinking his dark coffee while his dark blue eyes read all of the papers on the table. The papers talked about bills, taxes, and many other things. And all of it ended with a paper with bold red letters saying "bankruptcy".
Charles rubbed the sleepiness from his eyes, "How am I going to tell my family?" He sighed to himself.
Charles then heard footsteps grow louder and louder. He knew from those steps that it was his lovely wedded wife. He didn't look at her as she walked over to the coffeemaker and poured herself a cup.
"Good morning darling." She whispered to him.
"Morning, Henrietta." Him said back to her.
Henrietta moved some of her golden blonde hair away from eyes as she walked towards her husband. She sat down next him and took a sip of her coffee.
"How's your job hunting?" She asked while rubbing his back.
"It's not going well." He responded.
"Oh," she paused, "well you can help us here while your looking for a job, I do have a medical degree so I can become a nurs-"
"You don't have to." Charles interrupted her and passed the papers to her.
She skimmed through but she knew what they were all about. A dark cloud lumbered over her, as fear and worry washed over. She looked at her husband in disbelief.
"Bankruptcy," She stuttered, "how did this happen?"
"We wasted all of our money on pointless things, then I got laid of by my job, and now we're getting evicted." Charles explained with a monotone voice.
"Where...where are we going to go? What are we doing to do?!" Henrietta panicked.
"It's fine, I found a place in this small town in Texas called Spearfish." Charles told his worrying wife.
"Is...is it a trailer?" She asked.
Charles sighed. "Yes, yes it is."
"Oh my god, we're broke..." Henrietta spoke.
"Henny, I know you grew up wealthy and don't know how to deal with this but I know how to. You know I grew up poor in West Virginia." Charles told Henrietta.
"I...I know but...." She murmured.
"It's the only place I could afford." He told her.
Henrietta sighed and looked at the clock, "It's almost seven, the kids will up soon."
She got up, turned the kitchen light on, and started cooking.
"So," she asked as she cooked "how long are they letting us stay here?"
"Until May 28th." Charles responded.
"So a week until now....." Henrietta told herself as she turned on the radio.
Out of his room come Charles and Henrietta's son. He moved his messy dark brown hair away from his eyes as he entered the kitchen. He yawned and sat to the right of his father.
"Hey Franklin," Charles said in a positive tone, "the big one-eight is coming up in a few months. How about I-"
Franklin interrupted him. "I know we're now dirt poor."
"How did you know?" Charles asked his son.
"I read through the papers while you all were asleep."
"Just don't tell your sister," Henrietta told Franklin, "we'll tell her later."
Though that breakfast morning was extremely unpleasant. Especially when Christy awoke and joined them. They never knew was coming for them when they finally moved to Spearfish, if only someone told them.
