"PLEASE! SHOW US MERCY!" A woman screamed. The sphinx walked closer, its face becoming more terrifying with each step.
"Why should I?" The Sphinx asked, and waited for no answer. "You know the rules. And do you know what happens to the people who break the rules?" Again, the Sphinx waited for no answer and continued. "They perish."
As the Sphinx raised a paw, ready to for the kill, a man yelled at her, "Wait! We broke the rules for our son. He is a newborn and we wanted him to have a special name, perhaps he could be named after something in this beautiful forest. We realized our mistake and we won't let anyone come back here to disturb you. We need to go back to our village, our home, we need to raise our son!"
The Sphinx smiled and sat down. "I like this man," The Sphinx thought. "He is strong, yet weak at the same time. The woman is just desperate. But one thing is for sure, they both are very brave. Not just for walking into this forest, but for standing up to me to be let go. Few do that. And for the ones that do, I think they deserve to be let go."
As the Sphinx thought, the man and the women slowly got up and started to back away. After a few steps, they broke into a run. The Sphinx saw this and was very upset by it. She got up and chased them. Being bigger, stronger, and faster, made the Sphinx catch up with the couple very quickly.
"I WAS GOING TO LET YOU GO BACK! BUT NOW? I HAVE CHANGED MY MIND!" The Sphinx yelled. As the Sphinx caught up with the couple, she lowered her voice. "It is a shame that I must do this. I really was just starting to like the two of you." Those words, where the last words that the couple would ever hear again.
